TI following lines were written soon after the
planting of the top of Punchbowl Hill with trees,
tut have never before been in print.
Dream of Punchbowl Hill.
I hal a dream, a very pleasant dream,
A dream that like the rfulorl tone of org
l.eavea music's echoes on lha tuneful ear ;
A phantom picture vthich the train untold
Amulil the darkest shadows of t ha night,
And vhn 'tia gone the image atiil remaioa
In memorj'a chambers ; tit perchance imitressed
A mirrored outline tamped apon the taiad i
fa , . ;
I dreamed a park waa planted on iny head,
A sylvan beauty clothed and cooled 017 brow,
While gorgeoa flower abed perfume Ihro' the air ;
lar sparklinf, fou&uins marmuMd ,'Acatb the tree
Or danced with joy, reflecting silvery beam
That played npon their surface ; and gay bird
Of bright and golden plumage flattered near
Or sang their merry carols 00 the boughs ;
The noontiJe beat was cooled by flood and shade,
W her mountain winds came sighing thro the leaves
That quivered gently with the breath of life ;
Vhil far above hung as a canopy
The vault of space the soft blua tropic sky,
la wbldh moved claudles white as driven snow j
No discord jarred the happiness and peace
Wlikb minglsd there, the icene Itself repelled
A U rd and noisy clamor s nature smiled
On gorgeous beaoly that would even tempt
An angel I OBI above to tread earth's soil,
Where high above the surface of oar globe
Remote from vice he'd atill be near to Heaven :
The distant sound of Ocean faintly heard
Mixed with lha murmur of the fountain near;
tavern were seated in ambrosial bower,
And told their tale In harmony and bliss,
L' (.trammeled by the cares of Earth beneath
For here was an that heart could well desire.
Lore, beauty, paace and all the countless Joys
Of nature's blessings, felt thro' sight And sound :
Decay had not yet ventured to intrude
Ilcff haatgr firm upon the youthful groves, .
AH spring and life the flowers and foliage fresh.
The ihick'ning growth but tempered light and heat,
Sweet sounds of harmony amidst the trees
Hpread and re-echoed over bower and path ,
And, lighted by celestial beams, subdued
Were all surroundings of my (airy dream :
A vision of the night that glistened grand
But faided ere Aurora lit the East
And spread her brightening beams upon my sight ;
The rich enchantment vanished from my gaze
Like some g.ty pleasure that may charm awhile,
Then fly and leave behind the poisoned sting
That pleasures oft do leave ; but 'twas a dream,
Only a dream that spread A phantom show,
A nothing, harmless aa the air we breathe.
Ytt cams, a sadness resting on my heart ! . - -
I .missed the apparition, and 1 sighed -To
have it back j for with the breaking dawn,
And long before the monkey-pod bad spread
lis tender leaves to greet the breath of morn ;
Before the early bee had sallied forth
To tsata the dewey sweets or opening flower ; . -My
phantom park was gone, and in its place
Were stretched to view upon my barren slopes
I.arge circling ruts and furrows on my pate,
That spoiled the even smoothness ol my scalp ;
The cattle brwzed upon my withered turf
A a they had! browzed of yore 5 and near at hand
A rounded lumber skeletoa enclosed
Gin cases, broken bottles and the like j
Moieties of barrels, cans and dishes
In frag menu strewed unsightly space within ;
While sapling. planted (carelessly perhaps,) i
Lay dead aad dry. As seen by early light.
Ah ! what a contrast to my gorgeous dream.
That thus dissolved to monuments of wreck
And rubbUh rotting 00 mine eminence.
It waa an Irishman who wrote to Mr. Plimsoll
to aek if a coffin ship could not always be distin
guished in the water by the wake after it.
A NaohTille roan answered a Chicago adver
tisment, "How to win at poker," and received
for hia two dollars the following; "Hold four acca
or don't poke."
It ia easy to tell when others are flattered, but
pot when we ourselfca are ; and every man and
woman will lend firm belief to the soft nothings
of the very man they believe to be an arrant flat
terer when othere arc in the case.
Old man Boggs wished to make some slight
repairs on the top of hia residence, near Cincin
nati, and for this purpose bad occasion to. tear
up -a few ihinglcs. : In doing so in a quiet and
inoffensive manner he waa astonished to find that
he bad disturbed a horneta nest. The hornets
swarmed out on Mr. Boggs. They mado it hot
for him - at the very first onset. He rushed for
the ladder, attacked from behind, when, horror
of horrors ! a neighbor had borrowed bis ladder !
Mr. Boggs cavorted, he tumbled, he rolled from
one end of the roof to the other, screaming aa he
went, "Ladder! ladder!" The horneta contin
ually" increased ; they flew at his nose, his ears,
hia cheeks; they danced on his forehead, they
crawled down hia back, they flew up hia breeches
leg, tbey met half way and focgha each other;
they etnng her - and there and everywhere.
Bog", vrild gesticulationa and terrific shouta at
trackid the attention of the whole neighborhood.
Ilia friends mistook the shouta of "ladder!"
horneta !" for " Tilden and Hcndricka !" and
thought he waa ratifying, but so much serious
ness was depicted on hia face that a ladder was
finally procured and a rescue effected. Mr. Boggs
is laid up for repairs now, and his face looks
like the newspaper pictures of a defeated prize
The Mas who Gave Odds. After a strange
man had finished eating a hearty meal at one of
the stands in the City-Hall market yesterday, he
remarked to the woman :
" As I was sitting down to this meal I said to
myself that I'd bet $1 ngainst the dinner that
the Greenback candidates would not carry a sin
gle State. If they do you have won the SI and
shall have it."
" I want 33 cents of you," she replied, pulling
off ber comforter. , ,
' Qr I'll bet you $5 against the meal that the
Democrats carry Jsew ork State," he contin
ued. I want my pay or there'll be trouble right
here !"' she exclaimed, slipping off her bonnet.
." Or I'll bet the same sum, on the same terms,
that the Republicans will carry it,", he remarked,
aa he wiped off hia sandy goatee.
" 1 never bet, and 1 want my pay !" she called
out, being now all ready for action.
" Great Ucavtna ! but look at the odda I offer
youf" he gasped. " I not only let you bet on
either side, but I offer you the most fearful odda
that have ever been given since the advent of the
Christian era !"
I can't help the odds," she answered aa 6he
got hold of hia coat-tails. " You don't leave
here till 1 get my money."
" Or, 111 bet you 35 against this 35 cent
debt" he went on, "that neither Hayea nor
Tilden will be elected. One of them must be,
but I offer to bet they won't be, simply to permit
you to coin 35 out of my hard earnings. Great
Jiga ! but such another offer waa never known
since Oliver Cromwell kept a fighting dog !"
"Tbirty-five centa!" she shrieked, pulling
" Last, but not least, I'll bet you forty to one
that I haven't had 35 centa about me for a month !
Come, now, I offer you every chance to win."
' She gave htm two solid kicks, and waa design
ing and drafting a third, when be made a bolt
and left a coat-tail in her grasp. W hile an officer
was looking for him around the market he was
placidly surveying the Soldiers' Monument and
picking his teeth with a straw.
