SATL HDAY. DECEMBER 2.
A decree is puLlULc J in the Journal Ofictil which
protiJes for the takicg of a new census of the popu
lation of France daring the present jear.
A former North Carolina jlave has just been
ordained over the Church of the Ccnvenant (col
lored Presbyterian). Wilkesbarre. Pa. His name
is W. D. Robeson. Coming Nona with a Union
captain at the close of war he entered Lincoln
Universitj, Pennsylvania, and graduated from its
academical and theological departments.
The Con grt Rationalist is attacked bj Dr. Charles
Jewett for allowing the use of fermented as veil a
unfermented wine at communion. The Indeptndent
comes to ita defense, and declares it matter of in
difference, and "of absolute no concern," whether
the exact example of Christ is followed in this thing
or not. Christ took the unleavened bread on the
table. We may take the common food of common
life whether breaJ, rice, dates or bananas. Christ
took the common drink of the day -a fermented
wine. That would be appropriate still in Palestine
or France, here water is quite as good." S. F. Ex
change. Tue Biccest Bear Story. The Reno, Nevada,
(Jaztite, repeats it thus : " I've fought 'em
standio'. and running', but the toughest citizen I
' ever lit onto was a black 'un. He was eittin fn
j the chapparel eatin manzanity berries, when my
dog emelt rum and went borne. 1 sneaked up
and began aggravatia' bim by ehootin' at his
ears tvnd feet. I then took around bim, and with
three shots cut off his tail. Old Blacky heerd
tne bhootin', and turnin' around, see his tail
laying' there. He picked it up and looked at the
trademark, and I see in a minute that war was
comin'. I lit out for a tree, with only two car
tridges left and him a comin'. Well, to make a
Ions story short, I shot twice, bittin him both
tin) oB, and he begun to git hot, bo he took np the
; tree after me, and I knocked bim down three
times before my gun broke. Ha started on the.
fourth trip, and 1 didn't know what to do till I
thought of my deringer which, shot a four-ounce
ball. 1 drew her out, tied a string to the trigger,
and as old Blacky came up with his mouth wide
open, I dropped her in. He hadn't time to spit
her out, and so he swallowed and I pulled the
string. Off went the gun, and so help me, I
never see anything of bear or pistol since."
Mr. Luis J. Jennings, an Englishman who
Hpent several years in America and then returned
to England, submits testimony that bears out the
assertion that the English language is spoken
better in America than in England. In a recent
letter he writes: "It is dfficult to dt scribe pro
nunciation by written signs, and the style of
talk which is( fashionable' now cannot be ex
plained to any one who has not heard it. It
seems to consist in a general clipping and mincing
of words, mixed with a curious drawl, the effect
produced upon the ear being that of a new lan
guage. It is a fact that I often find great diffi
culty in understading what I bear said, and am
actually obliged to ask to have, some remark re
peated. The word 'here is - pronounced very
much as I have heard negroes pronounce it jn the
South, 'five' becomes something like fave. pleas
ure is turned into 'pleashaw,' later into 'latar,'
and so forth. No examples, however, can give
an intelligible idea or idee-aw of the affect
ation and the desire to be fine which are working
such curious tansiormations in our mother tongue
on this side of the water. It needs Professor
Lowell to do Justic to the subject."
