Hymn of the Seasons.
ar jimci TiiowraoM.
Theae, ai ihy change. Almighty Palher, thee
Are bat the. yarlol Cod. The rolling year
I a fall of thee. Forth la the pleaaicg apriog
Thy beauty walk, thy tenderneaa and love.
Wide fluh the fields ; the soflt-uing air i balm ;
Echo the muuouioa roand the fureal smiles ;
Aud every sense, aod every heart, l joy.
1tm cmnea the glory in the summer month,
V ith lilit and beat refulgent. Then the sua
fcboots full perfection through the swelling year ;
And oft thy voice ia dreadful thunder speaks.
And oft at dawn, deep noon, or filling eve,
. liy trooks and grove, in hoUow-wluapering gf le.
I'd y boamty shioes la au'.unin unconflned, ,
An 1 presfl a cocmon f.-au (r all that lives,
lit winter awful thou ! with (laid and storms
Around thee thrown, tempest o'er tempest rolled,
Majestic darkness ! On the whirlwind' wing,
Kidiug aubliine, then bid'sl the world adore,
And humblest utur; with thy northern blast.
Mysterious roandT what skill, what force divine,
Deep felt, In these appear ! a simple train.
Yet so delightful mixed, with such kini art,
hurh beauty and bene&cence combined ;
hade, nnperceived, ao aoflening into shade
And all so forming an harmonious whole ;
IliaL. aa they still succeed, they ravisb atilL
lint wandering olt, with brule unconscious gaxe,
Man marks nut thee, marks not the mighty band,
Thai, ever busy, w beets the silent spheres ;
Work! In the secret deep , shoots, steaming, thence
The fair profusion that b'erspread the spring )
I lings from the sun direct the (taming day ;
Peel every creature t burl the tempest forth ;
And, aa on earth ibis grateful change revolves,
With transport touches all the syriiiga of life.
Nature, attend ! join every living soul,
Beneath the spacious temple of the sky.
In adoration join ; and, ardent, raise
One general song ! To him, ye vocal gales.
Breathe soft, whoae spirit in your freshness breathes :
O. talk of him In solitary gloom ;
Where, o'er the rock, the scarcely waving pine
Fill the brown shade with A religious awe !
And ye, whne bolder note ia heard afar,
n ho shake the astonished world, lift high lo beaveu
The impetuous song, and say from whom you rage.
1J is praise, ye brooks, attune, ye trembling rills ;
And let me catch it aa I muse alotg.
Ye headlong torrents, rapid and profound ;
Yc softer floods, that lead the humid maze
Along the vale and thou, majestic main,
A secret world of wonders in thyself,
Sound his stupendous praisa. whose greater voice .
i , Or bill you roar, or bids your roarings fall,
-v Soil roil your bi cense, herbs, and fruits, and flowers,
' la attogted cloud to him, whose sun exalts.
Whose breath perfume you, and whose pencil paints.
Ye forests bend, ye harvests wave, to him ;
Breathe your still song into the reaper's heart, .
As bosne he goes t-eneath the joyous moon.
Y that lut'p auh in heaven, a earth asleep
L'ocsisscH'U It--, illax your mildest beams,
- Ye ronsteilaiioc-, while your angi-U strike,
Amid the apangled sky, the silver lyre.
Great source of day ! beat imag lere below
Of thy Creator, ever pouring wide.
From world to world, the vital ocean round,
00 Mature write with every beam hi praise.
The thunder rolls t be hushed the prostrate world ;
While cloud to cloud returns the solemn hymn.
Bleat out afresh, ye bills ; ye mossy rock.
Retain the sound ; the broad responsive low,
- Ye valley, raise; fur the great etacpherd reigns.
And hi uusuffering kingdom yet will come.
Ye woodland all, awake i a boundless song
Burst from the groves ; and when the restless day,
Expiring;, lays the warbling world asleep,
gweeiest. ot birds ! sweet Philomela, charm
Tb listening shades, and teach the night his praise.
Ye chief, for whom the whole creation smiles,
A t once the head, the heart, and tongue of all.
Crown the great hymn i in swarming cities vast,
A ssembled men to the deep organ join
The long -resounding voice, oft breaking clear.
At solemn pauses, through the swelling baas ;
And as each mingling flame increases each,
1 n one united ardor rise lo heaven.
Or if you rather choose the rural shade,
And And a fane In every sacred grove,
There Ul the shepherd's flute, the virgin's lay.
The prompting serapb, and the poet's lyre,
fciill sing the tod of seasons, as they roll.
For me, when 1 forget the darling theme.
Whether the blossom blows, the summer ray
Russets the plain, inspiring autumn gleams,
Or winter rise in the blai-kening east.
Be my tongue mute, my fancy paint no more.
And, dead to Joy, forget my heart to beat !
Bhoukl fate command me to the farthest verge
Of the green earth, to distant barbarous climes,
Bivers unknown to song, where first the sua
4 ill J Indian mountains, or bis setting beam
Flames on the Pacific isles, 't is naught to me -.
Since God is ever present, ever felt.
In the void waste, as in (he city full ;
And where he vital breathes, there must be joy.
. When even at last the solemn hour shall come,
Jtnd wing my niyslic flight to future worlds,
I cheerful will obey ; there, with new powers,
Will rising wonder sing : I cannot go
Where Universal Love not smile around.
Sustaining all yon orbs, and all their suns ;
From seeming evil still educing good.
And better thence again, and better still,
la infinite progression. But I lose
Myself in him, ia light ineffable !
Come then, expressive Silence, muse his praise.
A etump speaker boldly announced the other
day that ' the country ia drifting into arnica."

A Kentucky Democratic editor denounces
CoIodcI Ingersoll' because " he throws the dirt of
his disbelief on the liible, an instrument as dear
and precious to the souls of the American peoplo
as the name of its illustrious author Thomas
Jefferson, is green in their memories.'
An elderly, darkey was inquiring of a police
man if he knew anything of his eon Pete. The
policeman replied that there was a young darkey
in the lockup, for breaking up a prayer meeting
with an ax handle. " Dat's him, exclaimed
the overjoyed parent, " lie told mo he was gwine
to aainee nissclf."
Mr. Buckle says that history repeats itself.
We presume he refers to the fact that the Jews
were directed to make glad the waist places : and
that the same pleasing custom of doing it with the
left arm, on the front stoop, evenings, after the
old gentleman has gone to the lodge, is popular
The Baltimore Bulletin thinks that what
George Alfred Townsend doesn't know is not
worth knowing. It says that he has discovered
that Dan Sickles murdered the author of the
Star Spangled Banner," who also wrote ".Beau
tiful Snow" and " Mary had a Little Lamb."
An Objectionable Joke. A telegram from
Virginia City, Nevada, says that groat excite
ment was caused on C etreet in that city a few
nights ago by a man who gathered a large crowd
under the pretext of liberating some rats from a
box, for a dog to kill. About three hundred men
gathered about the spot, when a polecat sprarjg
from the box and began to disperse the crowd.
The man made his escape, but was hunted all
night by a gang with eix-shooters. So great
was the indignation that he was compelled to fleo
the city. About a hundred persons had their
Garrett Townsend and Jim Bruce went out of
Louisville, Ky., into the country to practice sing
ing bass. They made the woods howl" for
miles around, until a granger, with a double
barrelled shotgun on his shoulder and blood in
his eye, put in his appearance. " I'm lookin
for a bull that has been bellerin' around here all
day. Have cither of you fellers seed one any
where?" Jim looked at the granger, then at
Garrett, and said, ' Mister, the bull you'r lookin'
for ain't far off," and the man with the gun went
on through the wood, and Jim turned and eaid,
" Let's git, Garrett ; that bass voice of yours will
get U3 killed." And they walked back to the
city in forty minutes.
A country gentleman was in the habit of en
tertaining his friends almost weekly, and discov
ered that regularly some small article of plate
was missing, a castor-top, a salt-spoon, a napkin
ring, or something of the kind. He suspected
his servants, and to make sure, one night when
the guests had assembled, he said : 1 tell you
what ! Let's do without servants to-night and
wait on ourselves!" The odd suggestion was
greeted with applause and peals of laughter. The
servants were turned out ; the meal was seasoned
with sparkling sallies at the expense of the
clumsiness of this or that guest, and when they
had all gone the host took stock, and discovered
that two-thircU of the spoons had gone too.
