SATURDAY. JAM CAR Y 13.
The report of the Secretary of the Naj shows
that there are belonging to the Navy 146 vessels
of 150,157 tons measurement, exclusive of howit
zers arid gatlina. They carry 1142 guns. Of
these 123, earring 913 guns, with a OMtsurcmest
of 120,898 tong hare steam power; 75 are in ac
tual service, and four are preparing for. eca; 1C
may be considered entirely unfit for future serv
ice, and the remainder are at the various nary
yards for repairs. Oar nary, says the Secreta
ry's report, is now far more powerful for warlike
purposes that it ever has been before in tima of
Ecace. It does not compare either in the Burn
er or character of vessels with the expensive es
tablishments of European nations, but for the
defensive purposes of a peaceful people without
colonies, with dangerous coasts and shallow har
bors, separated ty a vast ocean from the warlike
naval powers, our navy is not without strength,
and when its ironclad fleet shall have been com
pletely repaired, it will be found sufficient to re
sist any force which could be brought across the
ocean to attack us, and powerful also for offen
sive operations upon the eeas and among the '
islands which lie contiguous to our own shores.
San Jose Mercury.
A Commemorative Symbol-
Through long ages the Jewish people were ob
jects of persecution, esteemed to possess no rights
which others were bound to respect. Under the
free Constitution of the United State they find
all this ciianged. They arc the peers in the ex
ercise of the social and political rights of the
beet of their fellow citizens, with the privilege to
claim, and the intelligence to fill, tho highest
offices in the Government. Tbey are not unmind
ful of these blessings, and to commemorate their
appreciation, are having a colossal statue prepar
ed of " Religious Liberty," intended as a gift to
the nation, and the formal presentation of which
will before long take place in Washington. The
sculptor of this splendid statue is Mr. Ezekiel.'
We find it described by an Eastern journal as
The figure is that of America; her right arm
is outstretched as a 6ign of shelter and protec
tion to a youth, typifying Religion, who stands
close by her side, holding in uplifted hand a cup
containing the Bacred fire. The left hand of
America rests upon the Laws of the United
States, which give religious liberty to all her
sons. The expreesion"6f the faceTwhich is turn
ed toward the. youth." is benignly sympathetic.
Around the brow is a circlet of golden stars rep
resenting the thirteen original States, while at
the feet of the statue the American eagle, with
its tulons on the throat of the serpent of Intoler
ance, stands watchful, ready to swoop down
upon any new foe that may menace the Republic.
A Thrilling Scene.
Ad exchange relates the following incident,
which occured during a general review of the
Austrian Cavalry, a few months ago: " Not far
from 30,000 cavalry were in line. A little child
a girl of not more than four years, standing
in the front row of spectators, either from fright
or some other cause, rushed out into the open
field just as a squadron of hussars came sweeping
around from the main body. They had made
the detour for the purpose of saluting the
Empress, whose carriage was drawn up iu that
part of the parade ground. Down came the
flying squadron, charging at a mad gallop down
directly upon the child. The mother was para
lysed, as were others, for there could be no res
cue from the line of spectators. The Empress
uttered a cry of horror, for the child's destruc
tion seemed inevitable and such terrible des
truction the trampling to death by a thousand
iron hoofs. . Directly under the feet of the horses
was the little one another instant must seal its
doom when a stalwart hussar who was in the
front line, without slacking his speed or loosen
ing his hold, threw himself over by the side of
his horse's neck, seized and lifted the child, and
placed it in safety upon his saddle-bow ; and this
he did without changing his pace or breaking the
correct alignment of the squadron. Ten thou
sand voices hailed with rapturous applause the
gallant deed,., and other thousands applauded
when they knew. Two women there were "who
could only sob forth their gratitude in broken
accents the mother and the Empress. And a
proud and happy rroment must it have becu for
the hussar when his Emperor, taking from his
own breast the richly-enameled Cross of the
Order of Maria Theresa, hung it upon the breast
of his brave and gallant trooper." , ; ;
