STKAaXUNQ A Horse. We have often held
forth on tZxeeo coliunna on the necessity of good
handwriting. TVe have to record an instance in
yvhich a life was nearly sacrificed through wretch
ed cbirograpby. - One of our citizens made out a
bill and sent it to a neighbour. The debtor on
on receiving it saw the bill was ' For Strangling
a Horse, 30 dols.',' This astounded him. lla
Lad do such service, performed, and he told the
boy he would not pay any eucb bill as that, as
be did not owd It, This message aroused the ire
of 'the borser strangler 'rHe hasted, ta tkeob-?
d urate debtor and demandavd in some leak why
the account would not be settled. It was
legitimate. The neighbor protested that hp
never had such 'a service done ; that be neyer
owned a horse, in faat. . What's that about a
horse ?' suspiciously inquired the stranglcr, who
seemed to think be detected an. attempt on -the
part of the debtor to evade the subject. Why,
xhis horse. Here you bring a bill against mo of
30 dols. for strangling a horse J'. The creditor
gaspingly reached for the bill. What's this
tomfoolery about a horse?" he frowningly said,
looking over the writing. "There is nothing

Those coloured residents of Ealeigh who were
talking of an excursion to the Centennial-have
about given up the subject. The idea originated
with a grej-baired uncle" who didn't expect
to live another hundred years, and who, it turned
out bad a private axe to grind. He planned the
excursion on the co-operative principle. To a
crowd of his friends he explained: "I reckon
de expenses at 50 dollars. Fifty of us will frow
in 1 dollar each, an' I will go down tbar. When
I get back we will frow in another dollar aroun,'
And 4j? next man kin go, aa'. we'll keep the
system" g'n' tiU de bull caboodle has been down
thar." The idea took at once and was freely
talked over, but waa knocked in the bead at a
second meeting by a. brother asking ; Uncle
ike,, how long does you- expect to be gone?"
Only two weeks' he replied ; each one will
be gone just two weeks." Ifdar's fifty of us
an' each one is gone two weeks, what part of de
how will d last man see?" was the blunt
query.. Uncle .Ike tried to convince them that
dates and figures ' were mide for mere conveni

that be was soon left alone. When he bad seen
the last man turn the corner, be sighed a sad sigh
and muttered: 1 guess I 11 have to go widout
