Nora Queen Ke-ku-pu-oMe, waa tbe Contort of King Ka
aaiwtia, who was preaent at the death or Captain Cook,
by whom hi name is written "Terreoboo,n and by Cook's
biographer Lcdyard " Teraiobu,, King of Ibe I (land of
Hawaii. After the death of King Ka l tni-o-puu, hi. widow.
Queen A"-u-i-oe lived to an advanced age, anj died in
February 1833, at Kailua on that inland, being then over
ninety years old. Eight year before her death, tbe poor old
pagan Queen had the grace to be converted lo Christianity,
and joined the Protestant church in 1821. She learned to read
at that advanced age, and lo her death constantly perused the
Holy Scriptures. A cave at Ke-aU-ke-akua Bay, where Cook
died, was tbe place of her Sepulture. Queen & t-ku-pu-oke,
waa a Hawaiian poetess of great merit, and composed various
Afe (Maylay) or Poems in that language. . Tbe original of
the foregoing translation waa composed by the aged Queen
P octets la 1930, six year before her death, he being then 84
years ol ag-:, and waa eu tilled " A Melt on the creation."

' But you eball go to school," 8a id a Chicago
man to hia youthful son. 4 'an J I want do more
argument about it." Then, aa the paternal
reached for something haoging up behind tbe
stove, the boy looked him sadly in the eye and
inquired : " Father, would you bull-dose me
into it?' The boy got hia holiday.
John is Shocked. About three-quarters of
a second after a Chicago Chinaman toot the
handles of a street electrical machine, the other
day, he began to remark : " Ut, ut ! hoi on !
wooch ! mi-wibh-ka-pullo ! way-wah ! Melican
man heepee dlam-hello-me ooch!" Then the
operator, who hadn't strength to keep the thing
going any longer, lay down on the ground and
rolled around, and lost his hat, and dug his toes
into the ground, and clutched at his diaphragm,
and chewed snow for a living, while tbe China
man tipped-toed off muttering : 'Whoopee !
Melican delvel on wheels launly man mucheo
no takee hol'-egan pay five cents hcepce dlam
fool sbakee bead off!"
Th Kinc of Burmah is verv croud of his new
Krupp gun, and lately amused himself by throw
ing shot with it into the Irawaddy river. One
struck a ricc-laden dhow, which sunk, drowning
the captain. The King was in raptures, for he
had pointed the gun himself. Shells were then
tried at long range, a village on the opposite
bank! being the target. All Mandalay turned
out to watch the sport, and the village was soon
in flumes. Tho inhabitants "ran about like
mad," in such a comical manner that his Majesty
laughed heartily. Then the crowd on the Man-,
dalay side tempted the military ardor of tbe
eracious sovereign, who suddenly cave the
sightseers a dose of grape and canister. Tbe
crowd instantly scattered, leaving some twenty
men and children dead on tbe grounu. ma
malestT was highly amused : the next criminal
is to be blown from the mouth of his gun after
tbe English fashion.
Springfield Republican: Brattleboro people
tell this for a fact : A young widower in Wind
bam country, not far from BratUeboro, who was
greatly in need of a housekeeper, rode, day after
Gay, in a vain eearcu lur u uucu -v i. luot,
almost discouraged; he drew up at a small dwell
ing among the hills.- Can you tell me where
I can get a woman to do the work in a farm
house?" "Where are ye from?" asked the
old man. viewinz the handsome horse and buggy
srjth a critical air. My name is , and
1 am from -." " Ob, ya'as, I've hearn
of ye ; ye lost yor wife a spell ago. Well, I've
got six gals good gals, too and yer may take
yer pick among 'em for a wife ; tbey wouldn't
none of 'em thing of going out ter work. Should
as full as lieves you id take Hannah, because she's
the oldest, and her chances ain't quite so good,
seeiDg as she's near-sighted and can't hear eo
very -, well ; but if yer don't want her, ye can
take yer pick of t'others." The widower went
in. selected the best looking one; drove to tbe
JustLee.s, was married, and carried home that
night a permanent housekeeper, who prove ta
be, so far, in every way satisfactory.
A Chicago Mn's Experience With Blue
Glass. The blue-glass mania has reached its
climax in the sad cane of a Chicago man. lie
went into an optician's and bought a pair of blue
goggles to wear on his eyes, lie dropped into
at hat store and ordered a little round piece of
blue glass put in top of his hat in place of tbe
usual tin ventilator. He then partook of a
dinner of blueh at a restaurant with a blue
skylight, dipped his fingers into a blue glass
finger bowl, and refused to drink anything until
tbe waiter hunted him op a mug with a blue
glass bottom. The day was now epent, and
going home in a blue light streetcar tbe blue
glass man, meeting his children at the door,
refused to kiss any but those having blue eyes,
eat down in a blue chair to read a copy of the
Blue Laws of Connecticut, and got into such a
fit of the blues that he took some blue ink, and,
writing in his will that at his death the glass
in the -coffin shall be blue glass and bis monu
ment made of blue granite, he grabbed a re
volver and blew out bis brains. Query. Dida't
" blue glass" have something to do with this?
His Experiment Results Disastrously. The
subject was tbe employment of women as sales
women, or " sales ladles," aa the latest euphe
mism has it.
Mrs Spicer said she always "hated to buy-any-thing
from a woman."
"That is because one woman docs not know
how ta tide another," said Spicer ; men have no
difficulty, in dealing with some women ; lorn rue
show you." As they entered the toy-store he
blandly approached an apple ..faced girl with
flaxen nair done np in small pats over her fore
bead, and slightly raising his hat asked to be
shown some toys suitable for a child of three.
Apple-face turned a cheap locket, hanging at her
neck, right side out, smiled and said, " Yes sir."
Spicer turned his eyes around in triumph, but
hiA ear on fortunately heard the shop-belle say,
sotto voice :
'Jenny, show this bald headed old noodle
some cheap stuff, will you ; there's Jim Spooner
jess come in, and I want to see him."
Mrs. Spicer chuckled, and Spicer thought tbey
had better walk out and see what there was at
the further end of the store.
