In a recent London publication cntitleJ Lit
erary and Social Judgments," by W. R. Greg,
arc same thoughts well worthy of reproduction.
e quote from a review of tbc book in the
Otago (N. 2.) Witness:
In his article on British and Foreira Charac
teristics, Mr. Gre has deal: with the cods of the
mordern world progress, advancement, luxury,
and ferere a hand, that we are compelled at least
to wonder whether after all. a railway is the
summum tonum of national good, and the accu
mulation ot bo many millions, the one sure test
of individual greatness. We connot," he
says, "We cannot bring ourselves to regard the
gallant and persevering energy which is devoted
to getting on in lire, as consecrated to a high
end. We cannot pereuade oareelves at once,
and without enquiry, as many do, to pronounce
ttie liie that enjoys as ipso Jacto and per se,
meaner than the life that toils.'1 This is the
key note, indeed, of several of his papers. It
is, indeed, a Had spectacle, he says, m another
place, "that of so vast a proportion of national
energy still devoted to mere material acquisition,
still labouring in a field in which such ample
harvests have been already gained; still pushing
on in a direction in which there Is little to win,
hile 60 many social problems remain still un
solved, so m&cy grievous wounds still unhealed,
so many noble paths still unfrequented and un
explored, we still press uviily forward in the
race. Though, the goal can present us with no
new attractions, we still struggle to get through.
We have got fur enough to command all the sub
stantial acquisitions and enjoyments of a worthy
life; we still persist in striving and toiling for
added wealth, which can purchase for us no
added happiness, and in the hot competition we
push aside or trample down many who really
need what we only desire. New roads, faster
ships, more rapid and cheaper locomotion, speed
ier transmission of intelligence, greater physical
comforts all these are valuable things, and ob
jects of legitimate ambition. But of these we
have now almost enough. We have pushed on
long enough and far enough in this exclusive line;
there are other fields to be tilled, other harvests
to be reaped, oiber aims to be achieved. Thou
sands on thousands of course must, until some
blessed change comes over our social state, spend
in life striving for a living, and thousands more
must concentrate all their exertions on the ac
quirement of a competence; but why should this
competence be made by our increasing luxuri
ousncss an ever vanishing point; why should
not those who have a fortune sufficient to supply
all reasonable wants, and to guarantee them
against anxious cares, pause awhile on the dusty
and weary thoroughfare, and try to form a juster
estimate of the purpose of life and the relative
value of its aims and prizes. We would at least
have every man content with the full goblet, and
not seek to dissolve with it the needless and un
taxed pearl. We wish to Bee the middle and
upper life oi Dngland less a scene of bustle, of
effort, and of struggle, and more one of placid
content and intellectual serenity; lees of a mad
gallop and moie of a quiet progress less of a
dusty racecourso and more ot a quiet garden
less of career that disgusts us in our hours of
weariness and sickens us in our moments of re
flection and more of one that we can enjoy
while we tread it, and look back without shame
and regret when it is closed."
One Cause or Hard Times. The identity of
interest between employer and employed is no
longer felt, as it usod to be, by the employed.
Formerly a hired man seemed to care just about
as much for everything that belonged to the per
son he worked for as if it belonged to himself.
Nothing of the kind exists at the present
time. Consequently labor is not nearly as pro
ductive as it would otherwise be.
Unwilling bands accomplish but little. Unless
a man's heart is in his work he is not worth
much. While this lack of interest renders the
work less productive to the employer it also
makes it much more irksome to the laborer.
We believe one of the greatest causes of the
present depression in business is the very change
of wbicb we arc speaking. Men canDot afford
to employ labor itfniuoy things where they could
if laborers took more interest in their work. It
is in this way that working men stand in their
own light. A man who takes his employer's in
terest thoroughly to heart.can always find some
thing to do in the hardest times. N. Y. ledger.
The Crown Prince of Germany on Free Ma
sonry. At the great Masonic meeting at the
Hague in celebration of the sixtieth anniversary
of the installation of prince Frederick of the
Netherlands as Grand Master of the Dutch
Freemasons, the Crown prince of Germany de
livered a speech, in the course of which he said:
"Nationalities have created frontiers; freemasonry
desires charity, tolerance, and liberty, without
distinction of frontiers. I am happy on this day,
which I shall never forget, to be able to raise my
voice in Holland to testify my adhesion to the
principles of the order, ana to express the bopo
that in tho straggle engaged for the free develop
ment of the peoples and liberty of tho human
mind, the final victory will remain with tho or
der." The Crown Prince's speech was received
with the greatest enthusiasm.
A Voyage Round the World. A well-known
New York yachtsman contemplates making a
voyage around the world in a 100-ton schooner
yacht The party will consist of about fourteen,
all told, including some ladies. It is the intention
of the owners to visit the Western Islands, the
Cape of Good Hope, Islands in the Indian Ocean,
New Zealand, Australia, Van Dieman's Land,
and the various groups of islands in the Pacific.
The cruise will extend over a period of eighteen
months, at least.
The editor of a journal in Chicago devoted to
spritual philosophy, for the pnrpoee of refuting
a statement of Dr. Forbes Winslow, of
London, that ten thousand persons in the United
States have gone insane on the subject of
Spiritualism, addressed letters to the superin
tendents of 87 asylums in this country as to
the facts. He received answers from 58, and
from the table published it appears that cf
23,328 insaae persons now or recently in 58
institutions, 412 are reported insane from reli
gious excitement, and 59 from excitement
caused by Spiritualism.
