rMlE UNDERSIGNED
HAVING BEEN
appointed Agents for the Hawaiian Islands for Appleton's
American Cyclopaedia,
Takes pleasure in calling the attention ol the public to this
great enterprise, which brings a library into every man's
household. Tne American Cyclopaedia is the grandest work
ever puhlished In America; It is the knowledge of the centuries
boiled down, the essence of all books crystallised. It stands
on your shelves ready to answer every conceivable question,
and gives in brief paragraphs the results of other men's year
of toilsome investigation.
In this age no one has time to grope among the thousand
and one different works for every fact required, even If the
volumes stand on his shelves; while with a Cyclopedia, the
matter In question is iound at once, digested, condensed,
stripped of all that is irrelevant, and verified by a comparison
of the best authorities. Moreover, this compilation has been
performed by special writers, who are the highest authorities
upon the subjects with which they deal; ao that this work is
the epitome and ultimatum of all knowledge, and precludes
the necessity of having other books. You are probably spend
log dollar after dollar for books which are only of limited
scope, whereas the same money expended in the same small
amounts for the American Cyclopaedia, will purchase a library
complete.
It is not obligatory to take all the volumes now published
upon the first delivery; a volume may be delivered one a
month, or once in two months, at the option of the subscriber,
and can be had In Library Leather, half Morocco or Russia
bindings, ranging in price from $9.40 to $11.00 per volume.
We would also call attention to Bancroft's
Native Races of the Pacific States,
Acknowledged to be the grandest work of research America
has ever produced, complete in five volumes, and will be served
to subscriber at $3.00 per volume in sheep,,
XT No library i complete without tba above standard

Sipposed Wreckage. Tbe report comes from
the other side of this island tbat two large spars
and a "camp stool," drifted on shore at Malacka-

and A. M., will take place on Monday evening
July 30, at 7) o'clock, at tbe Lodge Jioom on
King street. V lsiting bretnen cordially invited.
Improtixo. We are glad to learn by late
arrivals from San Francisco that our fellow towns
man and old resident. G. C. Mo Lean, Esq. who
visited that place for bis health, is improving
by the change of climate and may be expected
by tbe new steamer.
Supreme Court. Yesterday, before Anally
adjourning for tbe term, motion for a new trial
was granted in the case of W. S. Pabukula vs.
W. C. Parke, administrator of the estate of C.
Kanaina deceased ; and a like motion was de
nied in the case of Kaaibue vs. U. G. Crabbe
and wife.
Tub Circcs on Saturday last was crowded,
which is not to be wondered at, as it is tbe only
place of amusement during these dull summer
months. Tbe performers evidently do tbeir best,
and give much satisfaction. To-night a number
of new acts will be introduced. Tbe funny Mr.
Hrabam will appear again as clown.

Still Bettkr. We recently mentioned the re
ceipt of some very One plant cane from tbe plan
tation of Mr. McColgan, on Molokai, Since then
we have seen a specimen of rattoons, six months
old, from tbe same place, which measured eight
feet in length and nine inches In circumference!
Any other plantation is at liberty to beat this.
McColgan's plantation is virgin soil, and be bas
some b(X) acres available for cane a handsome
thing ahead.
Advance Hawaii. Tbe scboonor Trine which
arrived from Kau, Hawaii, one day tbia week,
brought a full cargo of sugar, tho greater portion
of which was grown by native planters in tbat
district and manufactured for them by Mr.

native paper, of this week, speaks encouragingly
of tbe proposed sugar enterprise at Kalibi near
Honolulu, and says that a meeting will shortly
be called of tbe native landholders in tbe vicinity,

The New Steamer recently launched in San
Francisco and intended to take the place of the
faithful old Kdauea in tbe interisland trade,
would probably be ready to leave for Honolulu
about tbe 1st of August. Tbe San Francisco
papers have been profuse in their jokes and witti
cisms in regard to the sound of tbe name wblcb she
bears tbe Likelike. This name, though it is tbat
ot an bonored cbieless, and a sister of tbe King,
is we opine, a temporary one given for tbe pur
pose ot clearing from port, and we tbink tbat tbe
permanent name will be announced on her arrival
bere.
Straight Streets. These we cannot get in Ho
nolulu without great expense, which cannot be
afforded at present. But at tbe corner of Fort and
Hotel streets, where (J. Brewer & Co. are about
erecting a brick block, we note that there bas been
a question about straightening Hotel street, which
was submitted to a jury by tbe Minister of tbe In
terior ana settled as is supposed to tbe satisfaction
of all concerned. While on tbia subject, we would
suggest tnat tbe present is a good opportunity and
tne best tnat ever will occur to open and widen
Alakea street below Queen street, We shall refer
to this subject again,
Magic Cbcam. J. N. Ingram, of magic cream
renown, after making a tour of Hawaii, visiting
tbe volcano; tbe water falls of Hilo J tbe beauti
ful valley of Waiplo ; the great plains of Waimea
and Kau ; tbe coffee groves of Kona and Capt.
Cook's monument at Kealakekua Bay witnessing
tbe sun rise from tbe top ot Uaieakala, 10,000 feet
np in tbe air ; visiting tbe romantic valley of lao;
Arc. ac, nas again appeared at uonolulu, wltn bis

for Australia and leaving out tbe benighted South
Sea Islands will stop over at Auckland to reluvan-
ate tbe New Zealanders with bis " Kilauea Water'
1 magic cream " no longer. Mr. A. McWayne,
Druggist, is agent at these Islands for tbis really
useful compound,
Other Fields or Emigration. While the Agent
of tbis government is in New Zealand, on the busi
ness of gathering South Sea Islanders as laborers
for this Kingdom, it accurs to us that perhaps it
would be easy to get a number of the Maori natives
of New Zealand to come over bere and settle down
with tbeir wives and families. We may remark
tbat tbe late chief, the Hon. William Hosplli Kaaa-
wai. who accompanied Queen Emma to England,
subsequently wett to New Zealand, and was nego
tiating with Tamare, the Maori King, to establish a
settlement of Maoris in Hawaii oei but the plan
was not then carried out. The Ilawauans wt sup
pose would receive with pleasure a detachment of ,
their Maori ' cousins," ana we ihidk tnat several
Maoris, with wives and families would readily con
sent to come to these islands.
Mrsic bt the Band. Everybody is agreeably
surprised and delighted to observe tbe extraor
dinary degree of proficiency and skill towbicb
our Band of musicians bas arrived under tbe brief
renewed leadership of Berger. We can only
guess at tbe amount of careful drill that must bave
been bestowed in order to produce such really
fine music, from tbe best artists, with which we
bave been favored of late. Surely our Band is
an institution to be proud of, and we hereby beg
to suggest tbat It and its director deserve a more
substantial testimonial of public appreciation
than mere words. Aside from tbe amusement, so-
called of music we believe it bas a higher end.
Says a thoughtful writer "Mosic begins where
words and mental images cease." uut, says an
other, " there is a state of consciousness, with or
without simultaneous verbal thinking, in wbicb we
realize great moments of existence, as being
created with souls ; and tbis state of conscious
ness bas its clear and powerful language. Who
will deny tbat tbe grand opening motive oi lour
notes of Beethoven's Fifth Symphony la not as
great a reality to our consciousness as the face of
a friend, tba sight of tbe sea. or a purely mathe
matical conception T " Music," says
Scbopenbaur, "does not express this or tbat
single and definite joy, grief, pain, horror, triumph,
or merriment, but joy Itself, and every emotion
itself, in some degree aostraetiy, yet cmeny with
out any accessories, and without depending on
t$e xpotye, or cause oi tpe emQUort expressed."

tbe Rev. Rees Prlcbard, vicar cf Llundy vod wg,
Glamorganshire. Wales, was flued by the bench
at tbe Bridgend Petty Sessions SOs. for six oaths,
which this churchman, a disgrace to bis cloth,
swore In an altercation in a Railway carriage, at
tbe rate of 6. a curse according to an old statute.
Terbaps it would be advisable to enact some sim
ilar statute bere say a dollar a curae. But, may
be, the legislators might be tbe first to bave to
pay down on tbe nail! Seriously, a rigid law
against blasphemy is requrled in all well regu
lated governments.
The Military music of the Cossacks I vocal as
well as Instrumental. Each notnia or band of tbe
Cossacks bas its Bards, who advance ut tbe bead
of the sot nia, chanting the old war-songs of tbe
nation, to the accompaniment of fifes, the only
musical instrument emploed. Tbis strarge
music has a very weird and romantic effect, rather
startling to the nervous system. The ladies of
Bucharest were quite frightened at the " leavx ar

Darikn Isthmis Canal. In tho " old familiar "
sheet of the Panama Star and Herald, we notice
tbe announcement of tbe departure from the Isth
mus, on their return to Franco of oof old friend
Lieutenant Commander Lucien Napleon Bonaparte
Wise, Chief of tbe Exploring Commission together
with the other members of tbe Commission. The
Star and Herald wishes them "God's speedjin tbeir
efforts to open tho interoccnu canal. Wo bare no
doubt that tbe rising generation of Hawaii nel
will yet see whole fleets of steamers calling In it
Honolulu, en route between Europe and Asia, via
tbe Darian Istbmus Canal. Wo Lave frequently
remarked tbat the geographical position of Uipsq
Islands is highly promising. Captain Bixio, second-in-command,
died a martyr to tbe cause, on tha
Isthmus.
Bt the last mail we arc in rooelpt of flies of

to us by our old friend William Murta Esq., pro
prietor and Editor of tbat journal, to whom we

for auld lang syne! We notico In one issue tlo
following: 'Tho Lahul Hawaii published tin
Editorial under the above beading ("Cwltlvato

translates as follows.' Our translation is then re
produced. Thus, our native Hawaiian Journalists
can perceive tbe Importance of tbeir writings.
The subject in question is of tho greatest mo
ment every where.
Press Compliments. " We acknowledee. with
thanks, the receipt of the Commercial Advertiser,
published in Honolulu, Hawaiian Aicblpelago,
and feel happy to learn from It tbat our old friend,

editorial department of that journal. Elsewhere

Proposed Interchange of Seed Canes, &c.
We bave been permitted to copy the following

but that we may, by the method proposed, securo
