Hawaiian Mele Haul ka Lani, or ''The
Overthrow of the Islands." by the Poet
(Exolisii Metbical Vbbsion)
Thine Isle is Hawaii , O raliant chief!
The top-knot of the hair which stands erect,
The first dawn of O-ulu's rising god,
The noble chief above O-oIn is,
A bore the taboo'd gods, e'en Lono's self,
Above the kinsfolk oi all ancient chiefs.
A bore all gods and men beneath the sky
A shining light nnto the Isle art thou !
The host pass In array before the chief,
They simulate a mimic fight in arms.
They rush to the assnlt, now they retreat ;
The boxers next display their strength and skill,
Like to the strong O-ki-a they stand forth,
The great O-ki-a tree Uboo'd for Ka,
To whom is sacred the O-ki-a tree ;
The acclamations of the multitade
The champions hail of the athletic strife.
Now onto the ke-iau the chief inrites
The worshippers to offer op a prayer :
O thoa ! who art the godhead of the Isle
Inspire the chief with wisdom to command,
Teach his Ica-ku-naM holily to pray,
With beads bow'd down at evening sacrifice,
At morning to set up the twisted cord.
Thro' out the day the service to proclaim
The ko-no-klll is a leaning tree.
Ye motley people, fickle as tbe wind,
Whose hair is dark or red, smooth or erect,
Those who gird on the malo round their loins.
Those with the tatoo'd thighs, and pierc'd ear-lobes,
The canoing-tocgued who live about the chle&
The veterans who aerv'd in former wars, .
The hosts who triumph'd on late fields ol fight ,
Ye flatterers, close-fisted, fall of guile,
Who deal in swollen words, and vain applause,
Who court the chief with false, inflated speech,
Go farther off, nor soil the chiefs own house.
In one respect the chief is weak and lame :
-ilia kindred seixe the fattest of the land, .
Such are the men who prowl about the chief,
Thy ask the chief to go this way and that,
They tax their brains to think for him instead,
Their interests aJuue they selfish seek,
Avast ! ye parasites ! Avaunt ! Begone !
Pluck up completely Ku-a-a-na's root,
Of Ke-ku-pu-a-hl-wa the deep root,
Aka-a-nu-i's widely spreading roots,
Pick off its buds and let them wither'd lie,
Let flatterers, unheard, sit idly down.
"The kuli fetch, msy peace and plenty reign,
And may thy people multiply, O chief!
.At Puna to Ku's image next are call'd
Ka-raeha-meha's loving people all,
Of Lono the taboo now ended is,
"Cme chief is occupied with holy thoughts.
At the he-iau Is his engagement now,
There the expiring year the chief will close,
At Puna he will open the new year.
(End of the Twelfth and Last Canto.)

Inquisitive echool-board officer to Hibernian
parent: "Was your boy born in Glaacae?"
No, eor ; an 1 hope he never will be."
" Capital weather, Mr. Jones, capital

" The 6lurober of the pure ia aweet," aaya

A colored speaker, before tbe Virginia Gen
eral Assembly, urging the Presbyterian Church
to labor among the freedmen, waxed eloquent,
and declared that the field ia already white
.unto the harvest.
There never was a time when the insurance
'business was so safe as it now is. All that a
man wants to do. after he gets insured, is to
die right quick before the company does. But
he doesn't want to be fooling around, living
:and having a good time.

Last night, about twelve o'clock, there were
'some cats on the back fence, who. In talking

that tbe lines should be drawn around Tschkal-jatoch-m-ayou
The noble Indian cornea into camp and
says: I killed your wife. I harmed your
daughter. I burned your baby. I find no
buffalo to eat. I surrender. Gimme rum and
pork and tobacco for peace. Who shall mourn
for Logan ?" And the voice of the pioneer
comes, " Not a darned one."
What doea a city boy know of the pleasures
cf early life? lie never tracked a woodchuck
to his hole, nor stepped on a bumblebee, nor
left an orchard at midnight with a big dog at
his heels, nor went swimming on Sunday and
told his father that he fell into the creek, nor
(laved old sledge in the hay-mow when they
thought he was at school. City boys don't
kaow what fun is.
A buxom-looking woman entered one of the
dry goods stores ia Augusta, Maine, not long
since, and asked the gentlemanly clerk to look
at his calicoes. " What prints will you look
at?" inquired the clerk. " I don't want to
look at no nrince " said the Youne ladv. " had
rather see a free-born American citizen than
1 the foreign princes you can bring out."
The RcirjfEK Land. Noticing the fact that
Andrew Jackson Davis, the Spiritualist, had
a vision of the " Summer Land," the Norristown
Herald eays : He often has 'em. The Summer
Land is watered with 'mighty streams and
rivers of immensity,' and the 'north center ia an
immense relix, an atmospherically coiled re
cepticle for the multitudinous electrical currents
arising from all parts of the globe.' But this
& not all. The simultaneous and incessant
rush of terrestrially-evolved electricity to this
great north spiral centre results in the instant
formation of a never-ceasing, self-illuminating
vortex.' And yet, despite all this, there are
men, who wish to be considered upright and
high-minded, who will go fishing on Sunday,
provided their fishing-pole can be converted
into a walking-stick."
Seven intellectual boys met by appointment
at the corner of Casa avenue and Jay street
yesterday afternoon, and were thua addressed
by one who seemed to be chairman of the
" Boys, we can't have the rehearsal to-day.
The boy who was going to act the angel baa
got to shovel snow all tbe afternoon. The boy
who breaks into a bank haa got the toothache
and is galloping around the house, and that
Third street boy who was going to rescue Pau
line sassed his mother this forenoon and got
such a whaling that be couldn't rescue a stuffed
dog. I expect to get walloped this afternoon
for stealing sugar, and I guess we'd better not
think of a tour to Europe with our 'Three
Women of Sandy Bar.' "
Tbe other actors agreed, and as they separated
in different directions each bov anneared to
fully realize how near he had come to making
a path for Edwin Booth to travel in, and how
some little trifle, like a sound thrashing, will
change a boy'a whole nature. Detroit Free
