"Disproportion of the Sexes."
To the Editor of the Pacific Commercial Advertiser :
Sib: I was much pleased and interested with
your article on the above subject in your issue of
August 25th, the present year.
It seems strange to me that an enlightened gov
ernment and our intelligent planters should require
so much stirring from the press on a subject which
so seriously and immediately concerns and affects
their own personal private interests.
The writer is engaged on a plantation not a hun
dred miles from Ilanalei, where the proportion
stands at about 6 males to 1 female and the trouble
to the management, expense, and loss of time
through this cause the disproportion of the sexes,
An old adage says : Every one knows where bis
own shoe pinches ; and if our planters, at the end
of their year care to reckon the cost to them of ex
penses, loss of time, and all the extra and disagree
able work they have performed all through this
abomination, they shall find it to be a very material
You counsell the government to endeavore
to find some remedy for this crying evil ; and at the
same time you give the remedy in a nut-shell :
"No Chinamen shall henceforward be allowed to
come here unless accompanied by their women;" and
if this were " law " it might not only prevent the
terrible state of morals which already exists and
with which we are threatened to a much greater ex
tent in course of time, but the country might have
a better class of immigrants and planters a better
class of laborers. Readeb.
To the Editor of the P. C. Advertiser :
Snt : It seems important that public attention
should be called to the fact of the urgent need there
is for medical assistance for the poor on this island.
During the past few months there have been
many sick natives on the Island who have suffered
for want of medicines and medical attention. A
large proportion of them have been deterred from
obtaining medicines and advice for the want of
It seems to be understood that the Board of
Health does not expect as much from the Travelling
Physician as formerly, and has reduced his salary
and limited his supply of medicines for gratuitoti

of Hawaiians ache to know of the suffering there
is among the people and the number of deaths which
occur for the want of medicines and timely advice.
it seems a little matter to spend tens of thousands
of dollars to send abroad for laborers, or to build
asieamer, or repair a notei, or to attend to any
so called public need in Honolulu; but when it
comes to WiaZ a s&1"7 to a Physician to alleviate
the wretchedness of the sick and to save men, women

rather than a foreign doctor ; sometimes because
they have more faith in the kakuna, and sometimes
because he takes more interest in them
Despite what may be said on the subject, there
remain the facts that there is much sickness and
many deaths among the natives, and that very little
is being done by the government to supply them with
medicines or medical aid
All who are familiar with Hawaiians know that
they yield readily to the effect of medicine, and that
they seek after Government Physicians who have
Two physicians should be employed by the Board
of Ilealth on the Island of Maui, one to reside at
Makawao and one at Wailuku. A third, residing at
Lahaina would find plenty of Work. And good
salaries should be paid to good men.
Public attention is being so engrossed with new
enterprises and schemes thai there is danger that
the needs of the common native will be forgotten.
Many planters and other foreigners deserve
praise for dispensing medicines as they do, not
only to those in their employ, but to others. But
notwithstanding what is being done, the sick and
the dying are calling for the aid of physicians.
And their cry must be heeded or the pace at
come to which the Hawaiian race is nearly extinc
tion will not only continue but it will increase.
September 19, 1877. Mali.
Correspondence of the P. C. Advertiser
Monthly Letter from Europe.
London, August 20th, 1877.
The quickest passage out to Australia, -via Cape
of Good Hope, has just been made by the P. S. N.
Co.'s S. S. Lusitania, which reached Port Phillip
Heads within forty days after leaving Plymouth, in
cluding twenty-eight hours detention for coaling at
St. Vincent This is ten days less than the adver
tised time of the P. & O., vessels, via Suez Canal,
and also beats the American Overland Boute.
When the news arrived here that the Samoan chiefs
had asked for a British protectorate, the Colonial
Secretary stated in Parliament that no such petition
has reached the Foreign Office. The British Consul
at Apia has reported, that on account of disturban
ces and great risk to life and property of British
subjects, he would grant protection to Samoa tempo
rarily while awaiting orders, but that, as at present
advised, II. M.'s Government is not prepared to
assume any responsibility with respect to the adminis
tration of affairs in Samoa. Since then the hoisting
of the American flag at Apia has changed the entire
situation. The great tidal wave of May 10th, which
also struck Hawaii, not only reached Australia, but
even the northeast coast of Japan. 9000 miles away
from Peru, it arrived there about 9 a. m. on the
14th, and continued all day, flooding the coast vil
lages and rising some ten feet. At a recent meeting
of tbo French Geographical Society the secretary
read a report on the late volcanic eruptions on
Hawaii. At the Anthropological Institute there was
exhibited the prow of a New Zealand war canoe,
supposed to have been the one which met Capt. Cook
on bis second visit to that island. The XIX Cen
tury is publishing a series ; of papers by Thos.
Brassey, M. P., on his tour round the world in the
yacht Sunbeam, which also visited Honolulu. The
cabin of this vessel is said to be decorated with
specimens of the art of every country visited. The
Astronomer Royal's report on observations of the
late transit of Venus is now in the hands of the
printers, and will appear shortly. JVaval JS"twt
The British fleet in the Pacific, exclusive of the Aus
tralian station, numbers at present 8 vessels with 82
guns and 1918 men. The greater part including the
Shah, with Admiral De Horsey 's flag, the Albatross,
Fantome, Daring and Rocket, are now mustering at
Esquimault. II. M.'s S. Osprey sailed end of last
month from Valparaiso for the North Pacific.
