I dreamed that I was dead and cross the Heavena,
Heavens after Heavens, with burning feet and swift,
A nd cried s O Cod, where art thou t I left one
On earth, whose harden I pray thee to lift."
I was so dead I wondered at no thing,
Not eren that the angels slowly turned
Their faces, jpeechless, as I harried by
(Beneath my feet the golden pavements burned) ;
Nor, at first, I could not find God,
Because the Heavens stretched endlessly like space.
A t last, a terror seized my very soul ;
I seemed alone la all the crowded place.
Then sodden, one compassionate cried out.
Though like the rest, his face from me he turned,
As I were one no angel might regard
(Beneath my feet the goldeu pavements burned) :
. '' No more in Heaven than Earth will he find God
'Who does not know his loving mercy swift,
But wastes the moments consummate and ripe,
Each burden from each human seal to lift."
Though J was dead, I died again for shame.
Lonely, to flee from Heaven itself I turned ;
The ranks of angels looked away from me.
(Beneath my feet the golden pavements burned).
Crigham Young thought the hardest part of
married life was to mate a watermelon go round.
Dubhtbach Macna Lugair, the chief of Celtic
poets, in plain English becomes Duffy McClure.
Foreign paper : " Bedad, an a it's nothing

where the whiskey was."
A good little boy who was kicked by a mule
did not say naughty words or go home crying
to his mother. He just tied the mule within
five feet of a beehive, backed him round to it
and let him kick.
' The' Dead March in Saul!" exclaimed a
started old lady on seeing in her paper the title
of an old t iecr-cf music. "Well, now, I don't
believe the dead can march in Saul any more
than they cuu march over in Jarsey !
A judge, joking a young lawyer, eaid : " If
too and 1 were turned Into a horse and ass,
which would you prefer to be? ' The ass to
be sure," replied the lawyer. " I've heard of
an ass being made a judge ; but a horse never.
There may come a time when everything bad
of Brigbam Young will be forgotten, and he will
be remembered as the great philanthropist who

An old citizen in a country village, on -having
a subscription list banded mm toward purchas
ing a new hearse for the place, thus excused
himself; " I paid five dollars .for a new hearse
forty years ago, and me and my folks hain't bad

The Rev. Phillips Brooks tells the suggestive
speech of a backwoodsman who heard Bishop
Jlcad preach without manuscript, in a frontier
cnurcn. " lie is the first ct teem nne tellers,"
said the homely critic, " that I have ever seen
who could shoot without a rest."
The other day the Butler (Pa.) Eagle,
in a brilliant report of a tony wedding that
occurred 'in that town, announced that "the
bride's trousers were the loveliest we ever saw."
lie wrote it " trousseau," but the intelligent
compositor made the fatal faux pas and went

It ia thought that B. Young ought to have
recovered from bis cholera morbus, but when
it came to fighting with twenty-seven women,
each one with a different kind of mustard plaster
for -her dear husband, and a new kind of herb
tea, it was too much for him. Every woman
laid her plaster where there was room, and the
prophet went down to his grave like a sand
witch. A gentleman gave a party in honor of a dis
tinguished missionary lately returned from hia
field of work. The ladies appeared with very
decollete dresses, and as his host feared the Btyle
might shock his reverence, he apologized to him
lorit, saying that fashion demanded it. " Ob,
I don't mind it at all," replied the missionary ;
" I have been ten years among the savages."
" Far be it from us to doubt the word of a
brother editor," says the La Crosse Sun ; " we
believe them all to be truthful men ; but when
the Durand Times 6ays that the water is so low
at the mouth of the Chippewa river that catfish
have to employ mud turtles to tow them over
the bar, we feel as though the editor must be
away and some local minister filling his place.
Where IIe Would Blow Him. An affidavit
recently submitted in a Brooklyn court reads
thus : And deponent further says that the de

that, if he did not at once leave the premises,
he, the said defendant, would blow him to hell,
which deponent verily believeth said defendant
would have done had be, the said deponent,
not done as he was commanded."
. A little squint-eyed Chicago boy pranced up
to his mother one day and said " Ma, hain't I been
real good Bince I've begun - goin' . to Sunday
school?" "Yes, my lamb," answered the
maternal fondly. " And you trust me now,
don't you, ma?" " Yes, darling," she replied
again. " Then," spoke up the little innocent,
" what makes you keep the cockles locked np
in the pantry the same as ever?"
The story is told of a clergyman that after
preaching an interesting sermon on " The Re
cognition of Friends in Heaven" he was accosted
by a hearer, who said : " I like that sermon,
and I now wish you would preach another on
the reognitiomof people in this world. 1 have
been attending your church three years and
not five persons in the congregation have as
much as bowed to me in that time !"
Rev. Dr. McCosh tells a story of a negro who
prayed that he and his colored brethren might
be preserved from their upeettin' sins."
" Brudder," said. ono of his friends at the close
of the meting, ! you ain't got de hang ob dat

Had Never. Given Up. A Providence minis
ter was once told by a man that ha had been a
professor of religion for many years, but for ten
years had neglected all religious duties ; but not
withstanding this he had never given up his
" hope." The reverend gentleman, noticing
meanwhile that this breath smelled strongly of
liquor, lost no time in telling him it was time he
