rr BILL-HE4D?. VISITING. BCSINES3 AND ADDRESS
CAKD5 printed in the highest style of the art.
The world stood still for a thousand years.
And crept fr a thousand more,
This wonderful world with wings tjt ears.
Like the Messenger-god of yore
And winged feet aid wingd wand,
And a wing on its either hand.
And more than Mercury wore.
It bridles and rides a furnace's foal,
With iron and hammer fir sire,
Great clouds of white from their nostrils roll,
And it feeds its horses fire !
They are blooded stock, the engines swift.
Beneath their heels the distance drifts.
Like knows from the Arctic Pole !
They rattle across meridian lines.
And down the parallels play,
TLey marry together the palms and pine-,
A thousand miles in a day.
The world has trained a wonderful wire,
A nerve of a route for articulate fire,
And taught the lightnings to say :
Dear Mary, be mine " " Car load of swine''
"One ton of cheese'"" Maria dead"
Joy ! It's a boy" " I'm coming to dine"
" Send sosp !" " She's married to Fred."
The humblest of words like angels fly
A thousand miles in the flash of an eye.
You hear before they are said !
What happened at ten you known at nine,
And you away in the West,
They distance along the lightninj line
The sun in his golden rest.
They talk to-day in audible tone,
The telegraph turns the telephone,
And parted lovers are blest !
Think of a girl in a lonely hour,
No beau in a forty miles.
She sits by the tube of talking power,
She thinks a minute and smiles.
" I'll call my John," you fancy her say.
He lives but a hundred miles away.
And banish the weary whiles."
Behold them at the ends or the line,
This John and his black-eyed boon ;
Uis he id and hers to the wire incline,
And she sings him Bonny Doon.
lie sighs for the only thing amiss,
lie has no voice, but then he can kiss !
He might as well be in the moon!
For emptier than the east wind's laugh
Is a lover's kiss by telegraph !
Ben. F. Taylor, in Syracuse Journal.
Re?. David Keppel seta forth in the Northern
Christian Advocate his views on hell. He believes
that hell is a well regulated prison, in morality
second only to heaven." If the i-jstein of credits
for good behavior obtains there, it isn't such a
terrible place, after all. lij helping to put out a
lire, for instance, a prisoner might have a few
thousand .years knocked off his sentence, or be
fully pardoned and restored to heavenly citizen
ship. Arizjna Citizen: Jluntinton met Scott re
cently, ancl after alluding to tfie bridge across
the Colorado, thus delivered himself in the
classic language of the Pacific ; ' I'm a son of a
gun frcin Bitter creek; I'm a wolf, and this is
my night to howl ! I've two rows of upper teeth,
and nary a tooth alike ! The lolks on Bitter creek
are bad ; the higher up you go the vua they are,
and I'm from the headwaters."
A gentleman, whose place of business is not a
thousand miles from the Merchants' Kschange, is
annoyed, as many business men are, by impe
cunious individuals desiring Email loans. He has
adopted the following method of dealing with
them. He will listen amicably to the long pre
face to, " Just lend me live dollars for a few
days," and answers," Certainly," and then,
turning to a clerk, eays :
' Jatues, we have live dollars to lend, have we
" Yes ; eir," says well-trained James.
" Well, lend it to Mr. Beet."
' It is not in, sir, you loaned it to Mr. Bum
mer day before yesterday."
Ah, yes ; bo I did. Well, when it comes in
lend it to Mr. Beet;"' and bowing to the bor
rower the merchant resumes his business, and
the needy one walks dejectedly out to try a more
A good etory is told of a Washington belle, who
is noted for her wit. iShe is the daughter of a
distinguished judge, and at a recent dinner party
was seated next to a gentleman who had recently
lost a case before her father, and who took oc
casion to refer to him in terms anything but com -plimentary.
An awful pause in the conversation
indicated that something was wrong, when he
turned to the lady at his side and expressed a
hope that the judge was no relation of hers. To
the great amusement of those present, Ob, no ;
only a connection of my mother's by marriage."
A laugh could not be prevented, and the gentle
man came slowly to the conclusion that the
judge's family was too much for him.
A charming new song. Lovers of the chaste
and emotional ballad arc having a series of unex
ampled refreshment. Each day seems to offer them
some rarely equaled gem, and the cry is ' still
they come." One of the sweetest of the later
publications is, " Call me when the hash is
ready." We cannot refrain from quoting a
Daisy, Darling ! do not wake me
tire the murphies you do peed.
Ere you've chopped the scraps and leavin's
Of our yestereven's meal ;
Wake me not to pangful waitings,
Do not serve me so asain ;
But when once the hash is ready,
Uentle spirit, call me then."
Every patient husband who has endured the
hardship of being called up before breakfast wag
ready, will canonize the author cf this melody,
and the wife of that husband will have cannon
eyes for him whenever he sings it.
A man who lost his good character some time
ago was severely hauled over by some of his for
mer lriends. " I know it, boys. I know my
character's gone, lost entirely. And," he added,
rather pointedly," it's too confounded bad, for
it was the only one in the place worth saving."
Boy (reading) " And as she sailed down the
river " Teacher Why are ships called
6he?" Boy (precociously alive to the respon
sibilities ot his sex) " Because they need men
to manage them."
A little six year-old New York boy was watch
ing the sunbeams as they shot through the win
dow and danced diagonally across" the room.
44 Mamma," said he, " what are those streaks?"'
" Those, my boy," she replied, are sunbeams
from heaven." Ob, I know what they are for,
mamma," said the little boy, who had been slid
ing down beams in the barn loft, " they are
what God slides the babies down on, when he
sends em to folks."
Where can I find an example of a beautiful
life?" Eveline. We don't know that we catch
joar meaning exactly ; but if we do, you can find
eeor four examples right here in thia office.
Nme of the scribes in thin office ever hurled their
otr-in-law down the cellar etaira ; they never
nveat into bankruptcy ; they never had an office
.in a t wilding and land association : they never
'belonged to the poor board or the fire com
mission ; vane of 'em ever were aldermen ; and
ralthough they don't pay their bills, they receive
-and file them regularly. If this sort of thing
tlsn't an instance Qf a beautiful life, we don't
