Mr. Kdison, the inventor of the speaking tele
phone, has lately constructed a clock which,
instead of striking the hours, tell its hearers
with a human voice what o'clock it is, inter

out, ' One o'clock, time for lunch!" to the as

A IIkctpk to r.F. Miserable. The best recipe
we know, if you want to be miserable, is to
think s.bout yourself, how much you have not
made, ncd the poor prospects for the future. A
brave man with a soul in him gets out of such
pitiful rut and laughs at discouragements, rolls
up bis sleeves, whistles and sings, and makes the
best of life. This earth was never intended for
a paradise, and a man who rises above his dis
couragements and keeps his manhood will only
le the stronger ana oetter lor ins adversities.
Many a noble ship has been saved by throwing
overboard its most valuable cargo, and many a
man is better and more humane after he has
lost his gold.
A great many people profess more than they
can easily practise. It is one thing to believe a
reat deal and quite another thing to do it all.
U'c arc like the bov out West, who, when asked
if his father was a Christian, replied, " Yes, sir,
but he doesn't work at it much." It is all
smooth sailing to assent to the thirty-nine arti
cles on Sunday, and not hard to shout " Glory,
Hallelujah," when the minister 6ays eloquently
that the right always pays, and that it is better
to be poor and honest than rich and carry round
an accusing conscience ; but on Monday the
dollar looks bigger and the religion smaller, and
one is more wiliing to stand a little scolding on
the part of conscience if he can increase his
.bank account t.ieruby.
Ax Astonished Dutchman. A Dutchman in
:he Pennsylvania oil regions let his lands to an
oil company last Spring on condition of receiving
one-eighth of the oil procured. The well proved
to be si pretty good one, and the farmer began to
think the oil men should give him a better chance,
and ventured to tell them so. They asked him
what he wanted. He said they ought to give
him one-twelfth. The arrangement was finally
made, with the understanding that the Dutchman
was not to tell anyone. All went smoothly until
the division day came, when our friend was early
at hand to see how much better he would be olF
under the new bargain. Eleven barrels were
Tolled to one side for the oil men and one for him.
''Ilow'a dish?" said he. "I think I was to
get more as before. You have made some mis-ta-ke."
The matter was explained to him that
he formerly got one barrel out of every eight.
but it was his proposition to take one out of
every twelve. Ihis revelation took Inui aback.
He scratched his head, looked cress and relieved
his swelling breast of feelings of self-reproach by
indignantly remarking, 44 Well, dat ish the first
time as ever 1 knowed eight was more as dwelve."
