The Land of Dreams.
BV WILLIAM CCLLf BaTAMT.
A mighty realm ia the land of d'eamn,
With ff that hang in the twilight iky.
And weltf-ricg oceacs and trailing streams,
That gleam where the dusky ralleys lie.
but over Us shadowy border flow
wret rays from the world of endless moro.
And the nearer mountains catch the glow.
And flowers in the nearer fields are bora.
The souls cf the happy dead repair
From their bowers of light to that border land.
And walk in the fainter glory there,
With the souls of ih? living hand in hand.
One cairn, sweet smile, in that shadowy sphere
From eyes that open on earth oo more
ttae warning word from a voire once dear.
How they rise in the memory o'er and o'er.
Far off from those h ills that shine with day
And fWlds that bloom in the heavenly ga!rs,
The Land of Dreams goes stretching away
To dimmer mountains and darker vale.
There lie the chain Ik-rs of guilty delight,
Thre walk the spfctres of guilty fear,
And siit, low voices that float through the night.
Are whispering in in the hopeless ear.
Dar maid, in thy girlhood's opening flowers,
Scarce weaned from the love of childish play ;
The fars on whose ch-ek are but the showers
That freshen the esrly bloom of May !
Thine eyes are closed, and over thy brow
Pass thoughtful shadows and joyous gleams,
And I know, by the moving lips, that now
Thy spirit strays in the Land of Dreams.
Light-hearted maiJen, oh heed tby feet .'
Oh, keep where the beam of Paradise falls,
And only wander where thoo mayst meet
The blessed ones from its shining walls.
shalt thou come from the Land of Dreams
With love and peace to this world of strife ;
And the light which over the border streams
ha!l lie on the path of thy daily life.
