Nrw 1 ore, March 12. Tbe Paris Economist
franchise, of a recent date, gives statistics show
ing tbe actual difference in distance and time
between voyages from tbe Enelieh Channel to
PaciLC and Chinese ports, and from New York to
tbe same points. Tbe advantages are in favor of
the latter, being to San Francisco,. Callao, Val
paraiso, Sandwich Islands, only four and a half
days, or from three and a half to four and three
quarters per cent., and eight and a half days, or
seven per cent., to Shanghai. If an Isthmus
Canal be opened the difference for sailing vessels
would be 24 days, or from 93 to 51 percent.,
from New York to the four places Darned, and
twenty-two and a half days or 23 per cent., to
Shanghai. The average again to New York ves
sels would be 2,000 miles, or nintcen days over
English and French competitors. Attention is
then called to tbe increased use of steamers since
the opening of the Suez Canal. The same result
would follow by tbe Isthmus route. The differ
ence then in favor of New York for steamers.
which is now very email, amounting to only one
day, or from l to 3 per cent., would, with the
canal, be, to San Francisco, 12 out of 28 davs. or
4 1 per cent.; Callao. 12 out of 21 . or 57 per cent.
alparaiso, 12 out of 35, or 34 per cent. an ad
vantage of 44 percent, on the average for New
York, simply doubling the commercial advantages
to the Lmted States with the Pacific.

An ingenious means of robbery has just come

with. Two passers-by advUed the shop keeper to
search him, which was done, and on him was found
a bank-note for 1000 francs. He averred with
fiignvd griet that it belonged to his employer, but
the shop-keeper insisted on payinjr bimfelf out of
it. and to tbat effect cave him 500 francs and sent
bim away sobbing bitterly. Tbe note was forged,
tbe advUers were confederates, and the victim not
only lost bis plate-class window, but 500 francs
into tbe bargain.

The two sons of the Prince of Wales Prince
George and Prince Victorhave made a highly
creditable examination, and returned at Christmas
to their mother laden wub prizes. They are im-
men-Ir popular with tu people of Dartmouto,
where ths Bullania lies. Tbe two bovs, on join
ing, where at once cbri.srened 'Herring" and
Sprat," and by these- sobriquets are known to
tbU day. Tbe Princes respond to tbeir curious
appellations with jaunty frankness and sailor-like
good humor. Among their pnecial fancies is a
craving on tbe part of Prince Victor for lump
sngar. and on tbat ot Prince George for nutmegs.
Tbe Kings of England have all had such fancies.
The passion of George III for apple dumpling was
equaled only by ni.4 curiosity as to how tbe apples

How They Start a Train-. Great ceremonies
are necessary to get a train on in uermany.
When all is ready a Cell rings. Then another
bell rings. Then the engine whistles, or rather
toot-toot-toot gently. Then the conductor tells
the station-master tbat all is ready. Tben the
station-master looks placidly around and says
So?" Then the conductor shouts " Fertig ?"
interrogatively. Then the station-master replies
xertig: positively. men toe conductor
blows a horn : the engine whistles ; tbe bell
rings ; the other bell rings ; the station-master
savs "So?" the passengers swear in various
torjguea and the train etarts ; that is, unless
there is a belated fat man in which caee they do
it all over again.
The Nicolaeiff Vestnik, one of tbe leading
papers oi Southern Kussia. was started 14 years
ago as a daily, and is sometimes published every
day in tbe week, including Sunday. At other
times it is issued but once or twice a week, and
occnsionally an entire week passes without its ap
pearance. The hour of publication is equally un
certain. It has been occasionally published at 5
and 6 in a morning, but generally appears be
tween 2 in tbe afternoon and 10 at nizbt. Tbe
publisher considers a regular system ot publica
tion too monotonous. Besides.'- be says, " we're
always short of, something advertisements, copy.
compositors or cash, and when we bave all these,
we re olten short ot readers."
Tbe ?ew lork uraplac of a recent date con

is not much of a jest about it, either. If tbe Anti-
Cbinese bill becomes a law every effort will un
doubtedly be made to evade it. Tbe Chinese
question is yet in its infancy. If nothing else will
stop tbe Mongolian invasion, powder and lead will
do it. It may come to tbat eventually.
