A regular Texas stew ?
No ! then I'll Invoke taj panting muso
And Imo a rw or two. .
Thermometer ninety at nine.
One hundred degrees at four,
Andi ninety agaia at nine . it., 4ft
For fall month or more.
So hot that yon fall asleep
Over the news by mall
" That a cow ran't low or chicken crow
Or a watchdog was; hi tail.
So hot that men don't speak

With a srarcelT arxlible froa. . . . .
A attMring rooster reeU
After a auutrack fljr.
And a hoa; just winks at an ear of corn
Which chanrea to Ha near by.
Nut a drop oi dew by night.
Not drop of rala by day ;
the wells and cisterns going dry
And the creeks have ran away.
VARIETY.
It was a aelf-m&de doctor in Michigan who
wrote -to John Bright and asked him how bis
disease got alung, and he i justly indignant that
hie letter waa neter answered. Detroit Free
Priss.
"Are these pure canaries?" asked a gentle
man of a bird-dealer, with whom he was neoti
. atinz for "a gift lor b: fair." Yes, sir."
said the bird-dealer, oofidentlj ; " 1 rawed
tbem 'ere birds from the very best canarj seed."
Nine tenths of the ouarrels of this life would
be averted if we would never take the d jubt
aninst charitj. Never expect an insult. Men
who go about looking fr men to kick them are
seldom disappointed; Men who accept only the
best interpretation of cverj act are sure to have
always the est acts to interpret.
One of the sad lest and most vexatious trials
that come to a girl when she marries is that she
'-. has to discharge her mother and depend upon a
'- hired girl. Troy Times.
But the saddest time for the new-made husband
is when the wife doesn't discharge her mother,
- but takes her borne with her.
'.. You are nothing but a demagogue," said a
tipsy fellow to Tom Marshall, who promptly
paid him back: Put a wisp of straw around
you, aud you will be nothing but a demijohn."
The following testimonial of a certain patent
medicine speaks for itself : Dear Sir : Two
months ago my wife could scarcely speak. Soo
has taken two bottles of your Li fo Re newer,
and now she can't speak at all. Please send me
two more bottles, I wouldn't be without it.'
The exasperated New Haven Register says :
"Ad odorous perfume wafts across Connecticut
every time there is a clam-bake in Rhode 1'elaod
and an east wind blowinz. If that little finzer
of a State can't keep its savory smeils at home, a
delegation will be sent down to roof it in, or else
eat up the clams."
They say that profanity was not known in the
world until one d iy, somewhere about 5000jears
before the Chriitinn era, when Ari-mdo. chafing
from bis ofSoe in deptrate haste to catch the last
street- car, was stopped by Tlieuiietocles. who
wanted to tell him how the rlreumatiaui had been
troubling him nearly all winter, and how many
things be bad tried for it.
V Advertisement ia an exchange " If the young
man who went to call on a girl an Fourth stree'.,
' last Sunday night, but who suddenly left the front
door and shot out of the yard, witti a dog attach-
ed to the dom'j of his trousers, will return the
dog, a reward or fie dollars will be paid by the
girl's father, and no-questions asked."
Ao Ifisb self-taught poet, being asked to say
grace over a small piece of beef and a few pota
toes rather of the dwarfed sixe, pronounced it
thus extempore :
O Thou that blest the loaves sod fishes,
Lxk dowa opa these two poor dishes ;
And though the 'tatoes are bnt small.
Oh. make them lare enough for all ;
For If they do oar bellies fill ,
Twill bs a kind of miracle.
Editorial Happiness. If, as it is sard, happi
xteM cons'sta in occupation of the mir.J, the aver
age editor should be moderately content. With
,two men sitting on his table, reading exchanges,
a book agent whip-.ing in his ear that he'll
never get such a chance again because there
wasn't but u made, a boy or two hanging round
the Q'jfkitu with a base ball item concealed
ah jut their persons, a com poeitor fainting away
' Tr a translation of some of his peculiar awtul
chirograph, a couple of patrons preening him for
a seven-dollar puff for a dollar and a quarter ad
vertisement, and a lerocious-Iooking individual
sitting just outside the door with a heavy weight
cane, and a crumpled copy of the parer in bis
band, waiting for a chance to see him al ue,'"
the newspaper man may be said to be just in the
suburbs of occupation, and threatening to be
quite busy in time.
A Nevada Jcdge. It is a surprise to see a
young man like you here," aaid Jude Bowker, at
Kcno, Nev., the other day, to a fellow who had
been whooping it over night. You filled your
self up with an enemy to deprive you of your
brains," proceeded the court, re-arraning its spec
tacles and glaring at the culprit. Now, here
you are, a young man of intelligence and gxl
clothes on, and doubtless you have a mother and
sisters you think a great cls.tl more of than I do.
YoCbave been sent to s? .oolind taught how to
earn a good living. In return for this you g i
screaming around the streets at midnight, tear
iogdown signs and making a wild beit of your
self. Is that like the conduct of a reasonable
creat'tre? No, of counw it in't. Now, I am
going to teach you a lesoon, young man. You
needn't turn pnle, for it won't help you any.
Have you got any chewing tubacco about you?
Thankee. Chew more and drink IeM, like I do.
You're discharged. Next time you're tempted to
take a drink, think of my kindness and weep,
and refrain from the debasing habit. Eh ? Well,
I don't care if I do. Avery, come out and join
me with this young gentleman." Exchange.
