' By a communication received from Kohala, flawaii, we are informed, that on the 21st ult, the planters and mill owners of that district held a meeting for, we quote from our informant, tbe purpose of considering questions of mutual benefit to those interested in the culture of sugar cane. Tbe meeting was largely attended, and on permanent organization Dr. Wight was selected as President, with Dr. Thompson as vice-president, and Messrs. Montgomery and Hookano as secretaries. ' It is to be hoped that not only will Bimilar societies b organized in every district but that we may also have a national society where delegates from tbe dif ferent localities may give their experience for the edification of others." The training school for na- Aive 'and I min latere, under tbe care of the American Hawaiian Boards, on Funchbowl street, has, we learn, the sme number of pupils as last year, ten Hawaiians and two Chinese. It is designed to make ..the institution self-supporting as far as possible, and with this view tbe students are ready to do any kind of manual labor. Tbe mornings are spent ia study and recitations ; but the afternoons and every Saturday morning any of our citizens who may wish their services, will find the students ready to do lauudry work, yard work, or any such kind of labor. Tbe wives of the students also reside at the Institute, and would be glad of any opportunity to do washing, sewing or bouse cleaning. Contraband Tuahe. The Hawaiian Board ofJ Immigration forbids tbe selling or trade in fire arms and ammunition to natives of the Pacific Islands by those who go in search of laborers. A correspondent says on this subject : " The most erroneous ideas exist here regarding the supply ing ol Islanders with guns and ammunition, The fire arms, as they obtain them, are not anything like so dangerous to life as their own spears, clubs and poisoned arrows. When the lime-expired laborer goes home from Fiji, be always takes a gun and ammunition. Like a boy with a pop gun and fire crackers, be is fond of the noise. They use the guns for saluting their friends at meetings. If anything serious really existed against this traffic in guns, we may be certain the British gov ernment would interfere, as their humanitarian views extend to the very utmost point of utility or rather the ability to prevent evils." Chinese in Hawaii. The S. F. Call of Oct. 19 has a lengthy letter from Honolulu over the signa ture of " Oahu " on the above subject, in which the writer combats the views of the Hawaiian "alarmists, whose horoscopes of the future are gloomy enough to make tbe average citizen melan choly." He goes on to apologize for the large and increasing immigration of Chinese here, mainly on the ground of the necessity caused by the sudden and imperative demand for rude labor." He says : ''The present aspect of the labor ques tion at the Islands and its future, are well stated ia a communication to one of the Island news papers, by a planter son of an Ohio Congressman." He then goes on to copy very freely from tbe letter of Col. Z. S. Spalding, which appeared in our issue of Sept. 13 last, dn we guess who Oahu is ? Will he not also likely prove to be the son of some Congressman? Hawaiian Statistical and Commkp.cial Direc tory and Tourist's Guide. They are a peculiar animal, and like t?ie seasons they come 'yind go. but unlike the seasons they are not reg ular in their migration, comeuuies, auer a wuoie year swarming about ,5'our house and every pait of tbe premises, making night hideous, and sleep almost impossible ; bormsr through the shingle roof, and defying ingeniously contrived traps, and passing by with apparent contempt the mont cun ningly concealed poison ; all on a sudden without any apparent cause, tbey leave the premises entire ly and are gone, sometimes for months and some times for whole years together. Then as suddenly they mysteriously appear again, and go through their nightly performances as before. As a gen eral thing the breeds of cats in this country are a degenerate race, and won't catch anything, unless it is a small chicken or a duckling. In Ihe city of New York, where rats abound, there are men who regularly follow the business of catching them, and for an agreed price will engage to clear a house of the varmints. Just now such a profes sional might find remunerative occupation in Ho nolulu. We may add that rats are very trouble some and destructive on plantations, infesting the fields in large numbers and living on the sugar cane.
