Y)a trusted in the sacrcdness of an emotion, as rj all do, and set up the imaje of a beloved ob frct as a redfjemer ; but fleh and blood has to be rwnrned all the time, and at every hour of the w'at st and best life not to be led into temptation. "Fr when led in when human sensibilities are terposed to a free encounter with human sensi tllities, there is no resolve, or pledge, or solemn ( w, that proves a stay, or stand by, and there is Co redemption or rescue in a man's own strength, virtue, or in the sweet and sacred memory of tae beloved being frail like himself." The mas tfrof Iviule stood up by the side of the young iran, who had remained standing with downcast kok. and the master spoke farther to him in a jewer and more earnest tone. " I know that I Jwifl do violence to the idea of a high sense of personal honor, and of the chivalric eetiraate of kit in what I will now say that it is the uni-t'-rsal experience of man, even of the highest pilture and the noblest influences, that he can p:i maintain within his own heart, a natural y gion.an enshrined purity of soul, that 6hall v ' ide him an assured saviour when placed upon ianeerous pathway. I At this moment Lmo appeared, to request his tia, (master) to dime and partake of the feast. fii.;t the ranchero had come to call Lono away. wial boat, (kalula,) that usually ran to the fnihboring islands from the northern side of the r ia'aad was now at Kaunolu on the Southern side ; erxaged to take a freight of sheep from that point (3 li ne'Shboring market at Lahaina, and the 0 raachero, desiring to go himclf on the boat, had ' com to get Ino and Papula, the two mot J trusty boatmen of the island, to accompany him. itf; acd had also made arrangements to have j Lr,ais go along with them. After some time, Lono re-appeared on the eur- face, bearing in his hand what Louis recognized as a human bone. And now the ranchero ex plained that at this place was a submarine cave, euch a one in fact, as Byron described in fancy, in his poem of the Island." And as I under stand you are a good swimmer, plunge in with Lono and examine it for yourself, and give me perhaps a better description than I have yet received from the natives." The courageous spirit of Louis would not allow him to hesitate. He stripped and plunged in after Lono, like Torquil following Neuha. and keeping near his guide be breasted his way through the whirling waters, dived underneath the archway of a gTot beneath the sea, and after a while stood up upon a beach, within a spacious submarine chamber, vaulted over with a crystal lized roof, and dimly and weirdly lighted up by the green glare from the inflowing sea, and from a few rays of light let in through some inter stices in the roof, from the upper world. Louis found a broad space of flor, and in the rocky wall were many projecting ledges, and upon one h found two human skeletons, whence Lono had removed a bone.which he now returned. The young man having watched awhile the great crabs, and pubis or eels in the cone, returned to his patron wb related the following particulars about the Cave of Kaala. In the times of the conquests of Kamehameba, he visited Kaunolu, n famous fishing ground. Here are the remains of the best preserved heiaus, or rude temple of the ancient times; and here are the etone remains of a noted Rulanakaubale, or City of Kamchameha. This was also a p aahonua, or sacred place of refuge. There was then a great population at this point. Many games, the hula and the mock fights were per formed in the presence of the Conqueror. A beautiful girl, with a smooth, brown, shining skin, and with taper fingers like nchus," the tiny minnows of the sea. took fart in the games, and won the heart of Kaaialii. one of the cap tains of the Conquercr. He prayed that she be given to him, and his pvereicn's consent was granted; butasanothcrcaptam Mailou sought her, the gTeat chief left the settlement of the question between his captains to the arbitrament of their thews and sinews ; and Kaaialii broke the back bone of Mailou. The successful champion had taken possession of his love, when Opunui, the father of the girl, who had pledged her to a powerful chief of a neighboring island, not daring to remove her by any force, or even exercise of parental authority, from the arms of the warrior captain, feigned a story of the dangerous sickness of the mother of the girl, who Jived in the interior of the inland, obtained Kaaialii's consent for the child to pay a visit to the dying parent ; but Opunui led her to this rocky brink, and plunging into the sea with the terrified cirl, left her a prisoner in the cave, from which her weak arms would not allow her to es cape, the father intending to remove her, when the great chief and his captains and men had left the islands. Kaaialii learning that he had been deceived roamed about the island in a distracted state, in search of the woman he loved so much; and guided by the instruction of an old priest, came to this place, plunged into the sea, and entered the cave, to find his beauteous Kaala, in a dying state, overcome with exposure, terror, and attacks of the ferocious pubis, or sea eels. She died in his arms, and, while in the presence of Kamcha meha, and his chiefs, who had followed the despairing lover, he beat in his brow by a crushing blow with a stone, and the great Con queror ordered the remains of the two lovers to be placed side by side, on the ledge where they remain to this day. Louis remarked on listening to the story: "after what I witnessed to-day of the spirit of licence and debauch at the feast, and after what I have heard of Hawaiian immorality, I did not suppose that there was euch a thing as the constancy of affection in this race." You have listened,"" said the master, who had seated himself upon a dry ledge beyond the spray, whilst Louis was dressing himself. " to the thoughtless talk of men, who judge of another race from entirely prejudiced and ignorant points of view. The Hawaiians are capable of great constancy in love. Cut you must divest your mind of our training and traditions of marriage in thinking of tbem. They know no sacred marriage ring, nor sacramental vow at an altar. This belongs to our Greek, Roman, and Christian civilization, and to the traditions and habits of long ages of the whole civilized world. But what has this isolated group ever had but natural laws? There are many of the generation still living, who only mated, as nature mates. And this nature is strong in the Hawaiian, and when ensaged in a natural, congenial, sexual relation his love is great and his constancy enduring unto death." "Let our race be silent in the presence of any Hawaiian weakness or disorder ; silent not to mock, or criticize in any self satisfied spirit of superiority, because there is none in our natures; and with all the accumulated traditions and teachings of pure restraining creed and beliefs, we are ready to wallow with the Kanaka when he invokes the impure gods of the ancient time." "The cave of Kaala is a witness, ana many other scenes and incidents in these islands have witnessed, that the Hawaiian is fitted to be a noble and faithful race, and deserves a most faithful and fraternal co-operation at the hands of his white brother." Lono now came to announce the boat as ready for departure. She was moored along-uae a ledge in the inlet, where the tide rose ana icn with gTeat gentleness. The master and bis men got on board, the well trained dog Drive returning homeward at a word from his master. The mast was stepped, and lashed r '-he gun- wales, the jib hoisted, the sail uniuriea, ana iue master held the sheet by a cleat, whilst Lono with steady hand and eye. stood by the broad bladed steering oar. "They coasted along the shore of the island for a while, but after passing a certain point, they struck out into the broad channel and encountered the heavy roll of the deep sea. The strong sweep of the moai, or ocean wind, came rippling over the smooth, rolling waves. The wind got up. The swelling crests of the waves were broken off in wh'te flakes of foam. The sheet strained taut, and the staunch kaluna bounded onward ; and as the gale heeled her over, her crew perched themselves on the windward gunwale to trim her; and now the mad careering waves charged onward, seek ing to overtop and engulf the craft ; but with her rudder vibrating as she swiftly scudded, and dashinz the assaulting spray from ber bows, she sped like a wild racer of the plain ; and the excited Hawaiians, with bared breasts to the whistling gale and beating spray, patted the sides of their flying boat, and with joyous glee urged her on her watery way. When the shades of evening were setting in, tbey bad reached their port. The master and Louis had stepped ashore and were going in quest of the agent who took charge of the freight, when they were startled by some one dimly seen on the shore, crying out, " Lajos ! Lajos !" And in the next instant, Louis was seized in the arms of a man whom be called Poytash. To be Continued.) HONOLULU, business CarUs. F. T.
