THE PACIFIC Commercial Slbkrtisf r. SATURDAY. . SEPTEMBER IT. lvSI. SUPREME COURT. Is Peouatk. Monday, Sept. o;h, 181 Btfoie Mr. Justice McCcixt. In re the estate of Kibewa (w), deceased. This was au application for letters of adminis tration!? u favor of Apiki (k. Mr. Holokahiki appeared for the petitioner and for others in terested in the estate. After evidence had been taken, the Court adjourned the hearing to "Wed nesday, in order that better securities might be procured. In re the Will of Dauivl Smith, deceased. This was an application for probate and for letters of administration to be granted to the widow of deceased. The executor under the Will having declined to act, and renouncing the executorship in open Court, an order was made i m accordance with the petition. ! Tcespay, 0th Before Mr. Justice Jcdd. In re the estate of Andre Machado. The administrator, Mr. A. J. Cartwright, presented his accounts, and was discharged. Mr. John Ribello was subsequently appointed as guardian of the persons of the minors, Mary and John Ribello, who are heirs to the estate ; and Mr. Cartwright, guardian of the property. lu re the estate of J. Kaonohi, deceased. Accounts were presented by the administratrix Mailohi. wbii-h were approved. Mailohi was appointed guardian of her sou Kawaa, oue of the devisees under the will, and an order was made that his share of the property a sum of $3Kj should be deposited in the Savings Bank by the Clerk of the Court. Wednesday, 7th Before Mr. Justice McCclly. In re the estate of Kihewa ?w), deceased. Proper security being forthcoming, the Court appointed Apiki (k) administrator of the estate. In ie the estate of Kalo (w) and Kalaina (k), late of Moloaa, Kauai. Wahineaea (w), the aunt of Kalo, had applied for letters of adminis tration, and to be apiointed guardian of the heir Kalaina. . Objections to this application were lodged by Fuaa, the uncle on the father's side of the child Kalaina. Puaa brought the child to the Court, where the little fellow slept very soundly in an arm-chair during the greater part of the hearing of the case, not being aroused even by the impussioued oratory of his uncle's counsel, Mr. J. I.. Kaulukou. After hearing a number of witnesses, the Court decided that Puaa was the more suitable guardian for the child, and suggested that, as he resides in Kauai, he should appoint a responsible agent to look after the rents of the property in Honolulu, which consists of land and buildings near King street, and is valued at $3,000. Mr. W. C. Jones was counsel for the petitioner Wahineaea. In Eqcity. Lam Chock et at. vs. Chung Wah el al. This is a suit for dissolution of a partnership and settlement of accounts between the parties. Mr. Hatch appealed for the petitioners. Mr. Russell appeared for one of the defendants, Chen Feu Shin, and argued that the latter was not a partner at the time of the prayer for dissolution. The Court held that Chen Feu Shin was a partner. A demurrer has been filed in the case by Mr. Hartwell as counsel for Chun Wah, and the further proceedings were qrdered to stand over until that gentleman's return to Honolulu. In Probate. Thursday, 8th Before Mr. Justice McCclly. In re the estate of Kapolei. Application for letters of administration in favor of Mihahala (w), end Saimiel Kaeo her husband. The peti tioner is daughter of deceased's third husband, but Kapolei was not her mother. In view of the absence of the husband (father of petitioner). j the Court continued the matter till 21st instant, j to enable him to appear. Mr. Hatch appeared I for petitioner. In re the estate of J. H. JUahiai (k). Letters of administration were granted to Kauihou Mahiai, widow of deceased. Mr. W. L. Holo kahiki appeared for the petitioner. Is Anything Fit to Eat ? From tbe Xew York Herald. From the objections that are made to one after another of the commonest articles of diet it would appear that there is among us a number of base persons who are conspiring to make trade for gravediggers. There is not a single dish in com mon use but is soundlj abused by some one; bread is said to be worthless because it lacks the gluten of the wheat, butter is said to be the cause of biliousness, salt thickens the blood and makes the user cross, milk softens the muscles and bones, beefetcak contaiua prussic acid, mutton is unfit to eat unless it has been kept so long that it is unfit to smell, pork menns trichinae, fish thins the blood, tomatoes produce cancer, berries sour on the stomach, tbe coats of which are' ruin ed by rhubarb stalks in pie or sauce; green beans produce boils, and tbe dreary list might be ex tended indefinitely. Between all these calamities antl death by starvation there is not much choice, unless one prefers to prolong a miserable exis tence by using some of the alleged foods that are put up in bottles with attractive labels. Yet somehow people go on eating all these dreadful things and living, and when any perticular food product fails and another is 6ub.-tituted the health of the public does not seem to sutler by the change. If the people who buy family stores will pay less attention to talk about the health fuloess of various articles of food and more atten tion to such methods of cooking as will make food most palatable and easy of digestion there need by very little fear of the natural quality of the rough materials brought to the cook. It is the dry, tough steak, the leathery slices of fried ham, the underdone vegetables and overdone meats, the greasy pies and heavy cake that play the mischief with digestion, health and temper. Some twenty-five Chinese students arrived in San Francisco from the East last month, and registered at the Palace Hotel, preparatory to leaving for home on the next steamer. The San Francisco Chronicle 6ays of them ; The Chinese Government 60ine years ago, with a view of stimulating the young men in the Government schools to close application to study and of elevating the educational standard, resolved to offer as an incentive a series of competitive ex aminations. Those who showed the greatest proficiency were to be allowed to study abroad. The main subjects were English and Chinese literature. Gentlemanly deportment was also an indispensable factor. In this way tbe idea of sending Chinese students nbroad was carried into practice, and continued until the present time. The cause of the withdrawal of these students was ascribed to the increased want in China of practical engineers as well as skilled telegraphic operators who knew Chinese and English. Anoth er reason was the desire of the Chinese Govern ment to 'ciire a military education for the young men, which was found impossible in this coun try. The students were dressed in American i clothes, but laid much stress on the fact that this had been done out of deference to the coun try which had received them, and not because they had growd tired of their national dress. " Well," asked the reporter of one of them, "has not your sojourn here affected your former ideas as to customs at home?" No; we are noted for the love of our country. But placing it as a matter of convenience I would rather assume the Oriental style. We have a brilliant prospect berore us and cannot afford to risk anything by offending public taste. Ob, yes, we were very well treated in the Eastern colleges, and leave very dear friends behind us whom we will never forget." Two fashionable young men, who are Tegular attendants at Dr. Pentecost's Ebenerer chapel, on their way to church the other Sunday paused in front of Fritz's beer saloon, on the corner of Austin avenue, when one of them said: Do you think it is wrong to go in and get a cold glass of beer before the church service begins ?" Are you going to pay cash down ?" asked the ither. " Not much; I am going to make Fritz Lang it up on the 6late with the rest." In that case we are-doing a good deed. Fritz will never get his money, and that will be a lesson to the Dutchman. It will teach him that it is wrong to sell beer on the Lord's day. Te-ias Siftings. Home Influences. Do not forget that childran are far more sensitive and observant than they have the means to evince. They feel a slight more keenly, a realization of wrong more acutely, and a glowing sense ol gratitude more ardently, than grown people ever do. The scenes of child hood are the memories of future years. j.Urj iibfrtisfmtpjs. NEW LAW OFFICE. ' JONES.
