Thia saying ofMencius) ia a fundamental truth. calling lor earnest consideration and application. at tbia time, in this Hawaiian Kinljm. miNCiPLta or mason e v. Menciua, in many of his sayings, sets forth the leading principles of Masonry ; and this goes to bow the very great antiquity of the mystic rito. whose origin is lost in the ancient unrecorded annals of Chinese history. Menciu refers to an antiquity far beyond his own day, when he says " The ancient men of window called in to their aid the compass, the square, the level, and the line, to shape and construct all tilings exactly. lhus the human relations are perfectly exhibited. And thus the ancient men applied practical benevolence in the affairs of men, in order to pro mote good conduct and good government. PRINCIPLES OF GOVERN HI NT. The following remarkable word, uttered tw thousand four hundred years ago, havo a deep significance for all rulers in our day and genera tion : " When the Prince baa do principles or stand ard of virtue for bia government, and his Ministers bave DO laws by which they keep themselves in the discharge of their duties ; then in the Court obedience is not paid to principle ; and in the office obedience ia" not paid to rule. Superiors violate tbe laws of righteousness, and inferiors violate tbe penal laws. It is only by a fortunate chance that a kingdom in such a case is pre served. Io this connection Menciua proceeds to demon strate that the welfare of a kingdom is not so macb promoted by the cultivable area being extended," or by the accumulation of wealth," as it ia by the fact of rulers being guided by principle of right and justice.' Menciua, throughout bis work, utters many profound savings on the principles of government. lie manifested the stern . uncompromising spirit of a Hebrew prophet in his relations to rulers. Thus be counsels a Minister in one place : ' 1 o urge one's sovereign to difficuit virtuous achieve ments Is showing res-peel for him. To set before bim what is good, and repress his rversitics, is manifesting reverence for him. lie who does not do these things, saying to himself: My sovereign is incompetent, or unfit for thi, in iy be said to play tbe thief, or false with his King." If a Minister will try to please everybody, he will find tbe days not sufficient for his work." Menciua, in considering the subject of personal influence, said : If a man serve others, and no reapo naive regard is shown to him, let him look within himself and examine the motive of bia beoevolence. If he ia trying to rule others, and bis government is unsuccessful, let him look into bis heart and examine his principle of govern ment." When we do not realize by what we do, what we desire, we must examine ourselves in everv roint. When a man's r rincir le of action Is good and patriotic, the whole nation will turn to him witb recognition ana ubniiaion. Let such ponder these words wbo, animated Only bj policy, show courtesies to a mm in order to gio some selfish object, and complain of the ingratitude ol a man whom they tried to hood wink. Menciua said : The rot of the State is in the family. The root of the family is in the person of its bead." This idea is often repeated in our day in the pulpit and elsewhere ; but bow many know that it was uttered so long ago Menciua adfiscd the Princes Kee and Chow bow to win empire : " Get the people, and the empire is got. There is a way to get the people. eel their hearts, and the peorte are cot. The way to get their hearts h simply to do right, and to strive to help and relieve them in their labors and sufferings." Would that all rulers would take these pregnant truths to heart, and act upon them. And thus spoke Menciua to bia disciples : " Benevolence is the tranquil habitation of , Tsan ; and righteousness is his straight path." rteter has tuete been one possessed of Com plete sincerity who did not mote others. And never baa there been one without sincerity who -j f Jaf w-j able to m)Te other." r A great man does not think beforehand of bia words llat thejr maj be sincere ; nor ( his etiona tbat V rj may be orrect.
