People up to fifty -ms years ol Hsie exempted. Thcee latter can be organized to do garrir-on duly and protect our homesteads in rase ol war. Ihe mounted Batteries ol Flying and Horse Artillery, with Uombardicrs, Cannon icrs. and Kacketteers from the picked men oT the country. And a Royal Xavy ! We certainly cannot get on without one, we can manage to have one w ithout much c -tt we could borrow Iruui friendly powers a lew iron dads, carrying guns ol a good calibre Our steamers and coasters to be re fitted, plated nnd bored and all harbor boats might be mounted and manned with a bwivclier to harrass the enemy. And let us trut-t to our mechanical genius und native industry. The question comes up, how provide for the Couiuiis eariat department? We can get along without pay, but not without feed. Wo must plant more iioi. 1'oi and patriotism are synonymous terms here. Sausages lod the (Jermnn army to victory. Poi will inspirit our forces to achieve glory. Do you want a loan, or not? If so, and necessary for the prosperity of all, let us have it. But let all have a chance to share in its advantages. Our planters are suocei-flul, our mei chants prosper ous, and our poor people still enjoy their poverty, and 1 don't 6ec but that we must march on to victory. Having now formed a Planters' Com pany, after a lapse of twenty-five years consider ation, " For many years the planters could not advance the sugar interests." Having now the means and organization, go ahead witli the intro duction of hands till we have aland of only crown ed heads and hands. We mutt have now a first class sugar refinery. We had one and it died a natural death through incompetency. But now the t-uar kings have taken thins in hand, let i us have a BUgar Palace. And let it be an under- taking not to be ene?zed at, and you can call it j The Pride ol the Isles ! " Success to native ! and loreign industry! Don't be bashful! Let j us have the Ten Million Loan ! And an Army i nnd Navy ! Together with a Planters' Bank ! This Bank will be much needed. Why not have it? Attached to the Bank will be a branch bet apirt exclusively for the benefit of uu-ci.anirs ua- tives, and laborers, for their deposits, at a re mu -j iterative rate of interest in older to protect ihem ! Iroin extravagance. Then by all means a Plant ers Hotel for keeping up the t sprit tie corps of Planter''. But a Temperance Hotel won't be very sociable. They voted for prohibition. Did they mean it? Some prohibitionists took cases ol liquor home with them. " Live and let live! " j Drinking is bad, but don't make it more of a I temptation than what it is. I think there is j more drunk at twenty-five cents a glass than there I would be at ten cents. Prohibit the drink and I you would innko greater and more charming the j temptation. And the cost would be immaterial , when prohibition would make it such a luxury. I Then Jook out for moonshiners ; and every man i running a little still kettle in his kitchen. Let j us have liberal laws and measures ; and if your l neighbor is not as good as you arc, don't try to ! force hiui to be rood. A. Mechanic. Queen Victoria's Health. The health of Her Majesty the Queen can nev er fail to be a mutter of supreme interest to all classes of ber subjects. The nation is at heart animated by a loyal concern for the personal happiness and welfare of its tried and trusted sovereign. The people are stirred with feel ings of mingled reverence for the throne, and affectionate regard for its present occupant. It is no luero figure of speech to say that Qaeeu Victoria lives in the hearts of those she rules over. It is, therefore, not in the least surprising that the notification of Her Mujesty's. projected visit to Mentono should have excited much re mark and given rise to some anxieties. W'v be lieve we are justified in stating that while there is need for the change, there is no cause for con cern as to the health of the sovereign. It seems to Lavi been forgotten that the Queen is no mere nominal head of this Umpire. Actual and heavy j state busiuess passes daily through her hands ! and taxes her attention severely. Her Majesty I has never been in the habit of attaching her sign manual to unread papers. She ascended the throne in times of difficulty' and with a stroni' sense of the duty and responsibility imposed up j on her, and during the lengthened period which j has elapsed since her accession, the Queen has i given a large share of her attention to public bus I iness. Successive Ministries have been formed, j borne the heat of the day, and fallen, leaving ' their personnel to find relief anil recreation in re tirement, but the Queen has never been free from the burden of State since the first day she wore the crown. It is a real burden Her Majesty bears a burden, a care and anxiety, und no human being could fail to feel the continuous strain the bearing of such a burden necessarily produces. These facts should not be forgot ten. The need for change of scene and climate just now is great, but not in any sense ominous. If Her Majesty is able to enjoy a period of perfect repose in re tirement, she will doubtless return with renewed Strength to the discharge of her duties at the fit ting time. Meanwhile the people of this coun try should under stand that wearing a crown or weilding a sceptre is no child's play, even with a constitutional government. London Lar.ctt. A cood minieter out Weet pre:iclicd a eernn n on peace-inaking. and aimed at two ol the dea cons ol liis cliurcli who had lon been at bWord points ; and such was hia cl.iqocnce and earnest ness that, directly the benediction w is pronounced one of 'ie deacons went over to the other and remarked, with tears in his eyes, ' Brother Stiggins, after such a sermon, there must be peace between us. Now, I can't give in, so you must." An inventor shows the electric light to the conservative owner of a rural chateau. There, cir, what d.j ymi think of that? And now that you can have a cai ill steam-engine put in, or one ol the Faure batteries for the conservation of electric energy, 3-ou otiht to replace your candles at once by " i'c-es, I know.
