A valued corrcsjjonilent, whose letter ap
pear in the Pacific Commercial. Adver
tise (wtekly edition) of Saturday last,
makes some severe remarks on the mem
bers of the New York Sugar T.ing. He
also send us extracts from leading New
York papers which show how completely
the oponents of the Reciprocity Treaty
have the ear of the Pre. of that city. We
take the following from the New York Sun
of the 21st ultimo a a specimen of the rest,
and also because of the threat it contains
of an attack on the Treaty in a new form,
viz., through the Customs Department,
which Is to be made when the sugar re
cently shipped from here direct to New
York makes its appearance in the market
there. An "interviewer" who had been
working up the subject, writes that, among
others, a leading reliner said to him: "I
do not care to go into details about the
reining business at present, but it is of
course a fact that a refiner who can use
semi-refliied, high-grade sugars centri
fugal sugars, as we technically term them
muse have a great advantage over one who
Is compelled to work crude low grade sugars
which have only been Imperfectly drained
of the melada by the old natural process,
even without the added benefit to the
former of no duty, while the latter pays an
average duty of 2J cents per pound. ' No
distinction as to grades has been made iu
the importation of Sandwich Islands sugar
at San Francico no attempt to make
them conform to the plain requirements of
the treaty. But they will not escape so
easily here. A vessel carrying a full cargo
of sugar sailed from Hawaii for New York
in February, and two more were to follow
very shortly, similarly laden. They ought
to get here in three or four months. I
would not be afraid to bet that when those
sugars are exposed on Skiddy, Minford fc
Co.'s tables as they probably will be, if
sent here to be sold on the public inarKet
they will be found to rank with the high
grade Cuban sugars, up to 13 or 14, Dutch
standard, such as we would have to pay 3
or 4 cents per pound duties on. We have
endeavored to get from the Treasury De
partment some intimation whether sugars
of such grade will be allowed to enter duty
free under that treaty or not, but thus far
have been unable to get any definite an
swer. But you may be very sure that we
will interest ourselves about ii when they
come. Between 7 and lo, Dutch standard,
have to be allowed under the treaty, and
properly none above 10, but the imports of
Sandwich Islands sugar show that in 1SS1
there were imported 2.S,4-Sf5,oS9 pounds
grading between 10 and 1.3, and 43,049,613
pounds grading between 13 and 16, while
only 5,373,00- pounds came within the
Our correspondent concludes his remarks
on the subject with the following pertinent
piece of advice : "It is folly for you to sit
down and fret over the matter; or. on the
contrary, to say it will all come out rieht.'
This is matter that wants the best ability
the Hawaiian CJovernment can command,
and 'eternal vigilance' will be only way to
bring things out right." Now this point
about the grade of Hawaiian sugars is one
which especially needs to be treated with
eternal viei'ance, because if true, or, whether
true or not, believed to be true, it must ne
cessarily rejudice the minds of many
against the Treaty. It is months since it
was amply refuted by figures taken from
the records the United States Custom
House. Yet here we find it all repeated
scarcely a month ago by men of intelligence
and good commercial status in New York,
and spread far ami wide by the most in
fluential journals of that city.
