Although every fresh arrival from the
capital complains of the dullness of Suva,
Levuka certainly is not affected with the
same complaint. Although there are no mail
steamers in the harbor, nor are there many
visitors from outside the town, yet many of
the business people in the town have found
it necessary to enlarge their holdings. Fiji
A movement is now on foot to establish a

Private letters bring intelligence of a most
disastrous hurricane which visited the
Friendly Islands on March 25th, and has
devastated the gronp At Tongitubu all the
churches h-ve been destroyed, 2.000 houses
have been levelled, stores and copra houses
with contents that happened to be near the
sea, have been completely swept away, a
schooner hs been carried inland, and a Ger
man bark, the Don Guillermo, foundered
with 600 ton3 ot copra on board. The
master and five men were drowned, but four
youths were saved. The hurricane was ac
comptnied by a tidal wave fifteen feet high,
which sweDt over the island, and did terri
ble damage, destroying the storehouses of
Messrs. ilcArthur x Co. ot AucKHna, in
which 300 tons of coprt were stored. All
the houses of n itive and many of European
construction were carried away, cocoanut
trees were snapped off like pipe stems, and
the island presents a scene of widespread
dsohtion. The hurricane is said to have
been the worst ever experienced in the group.
