r THE HIGHER ART.
The shapeless block of marble,
Beneath the sculptor's hand,
Became a thing of beauty
To gladden all the land.
The daubed and dingy canvas,
Beneath the artist's brush,
Reflects the glow of Heaven,
And the forest's answering blush.
And words of common echo,
Beneath the poet's pen, t
Received a life power mighty,
To stir the hearts of men.
But a higher art and nobler
He masters it who would!
Is overcoming evil
By oft returning good.
Sara A. Bhooks, May 15, 1884.
Address to Directors of Ungraded
Schools.
BY JONATHAN HUNT.
New Tork School Journal.
Among school directors there are live
men who work for the success of the com
mon school system. All honor to such;
these remarks are not intended for them.
There is another class who 3eem to go to
sleep as soon as they take the oath of
office. They take a deep interest in the
best method of raising pork, or the latest
improvements in a cultivator, but none in
education. Not that they value stocks
find crops more highly than they do
children, but because they are reminded
'by hunger three times a day that they
must raise something to sustain animal
life.
Another class, not so numerous, aro the
school killers. One is sometimes known
as the model school director. Let him
stand up v hue I address to him a few
friendly words.
I respect yon, sir, because of your
activity and your desire to be generally
useful. As a business man you are a suc
cess, for in business you use common
senso. Why do you throw aside that
commodity in discharging your official
duties?
When ydn wanted a man to build your
house, you were careful to get the beBt
workman, and when you hired a man to
look after your cattle, you sought a faith
ful hand. But when you wanted a teacher
for Your children and those of your
neighbor, you waited for a dozen or score
of applications before making your choice.
By so doing you gave the live directors a
chauce to select the best teachers, and
you were obliged to take what were left,
for every teacher, as yon ought to have
known, was compelled to make twelve to
twenty applications at as many different
places.
It may have made you happy to have
intelligent strangers inquiring for you,
but it would have been better for your
children if you had ridden around the
county inquiring for a good teacher.
You have been heard to say that you
never let any applicant know that ono
teacher is preferred before another; but
when you found that Tom Jones took
such good care of yonr farming interests,
you told him that you wanted him
another year, and that you would raise
his wage0. My anxious friend, did it
over occur to you that if you had required
Tom Jones to come to yon and sue for his
place, you never would have had his ser
vices? You kept him a good while; you exam
ined his work often and your farm pros
pered. But, my friend, did you look into
the school-room occasionally to see if
if your teacher was faithful and efficient?
No, you kept away, and when your chil
dren reported what seemed to you to be
strange proceedings for a teacher, you
censured her in their presence. It prob
ably did seem strange to you that she
should ask so many questions that were
not in the book, scratch straight marks
on the slates, .have the small children
learn to compose and write sentences, let
them make pictures ten minutes every
day, refuse to do sums for the children at
thoir seats, to have spelling-schools, and
to carry in wood and sweep the floor; but,
sir, if you had but taken a little pains to
find out why she did thus, you would not
have dismissed her when the term was up.
You would have known when you had a
good teacher and retained her.
Pres tuning that you have' listened pa
tiently to thiB exposition of yonr short
eoniings, that you are now penitent and
wish to turn over a new leaf, I submit a
few suggestions for your guidance in the
future.
1. Fix a liberal compensation for
teachers so as to offer an inducement to
the best; then secure the best you can for
the money, without rogardjto age or sex. I
2. Tieep a good teacher as long as you
can.
3. Acquaint yourself with the best
methods of teaching and school manage
ment, so that you will bo qualified to judge
of your teacher's ability.
4. Be cautiousin listening to children's
complaints. Say nothing until you have
listened to both sides. Presume that the
teacher is right in the ubseaco of proof.
Jv If you are compelled to criticise the
teacher, do so with kindness and discre
tion, but not in the hearing of the
children.
6. For gross immorality dismiss the
teacher promptly; if you have doubts,
give the accused the benefit of your
doubts.
7. If your teacher is lazy and incom
petent to govern a school, that is sufficient
eause for dismissal. If he is dead, bury
him.
& Never shrink from defending a good
teacher when, as will frequently happen
to even the best, he is blamed for doing
right by his ignorant patrons.
9. See that your teachers have good
school apparatus; also see that school
property is carefully preserved.
10. Require eTery teacher to receipt
I
Btfcn at
for property and its oondi
the
commencement of the term.
11. Impress upon the minds of pupils
the object of a school. Expel promptly
the wayward and unruly, who cannot be
managed by the teacher.
12. Whatever is necessary to be done
for the good of the school, do cheerfully
without procrastination.

mitted to the scrutiny of Register
Hanna, who, besides being old in
the Land Service of the Government,
is a practical printer.
These blanks, to be brief, are
warranted to be perfect in wording,
printing, quality of paper and all
other essentials.
Big reductions made on lots of
500 or more.
The blanks here named will be
added to constantly until we can
supply every blank needed at the
land office, whose printing by us is
justifiable on business grounds.
We mean precisely what we say,
and wish every atom of Saon in
this statement to have its full
weight: We are not to be bucked
off the track by foreign opposition.
We buy our printing paper in Kan
sas, and, as a rule, send for nothing
outside of the state which can be
had within it. When we know we
are getting an article reasonably, we
don't haggle about prices either.
We aim to assert, in letters of living
light, to be observed especially by land
attorneys in this land district, that
if any foreign agency offers bargains,
you can, upon authenticating properly
its offer, have it duplicated right in
this office!
Don't send away for what you
can buy reasonably at home. That
is not the way to build up a'country!
If land agents will not work for
the region of country in whose
lands they deal, who can be expected
to do so?
Cash must accompany all orders.
Yours regularly,
W. S. TILTON,
Proprietor Western Kaxsas World.
