The Nebraska bill is looming up. oeaeMionista. eboll tioniets freesoilee and compromise men are all taking a equint at it. It ina od-send to thewhole of them. Af ter wandering about over a sea of mameness for some months, in the name monotonous condition of life with thoe mariners who " sometimes see a ship, and sometimes ship a sea." with nothing to agitate them. nothing to look at even--uddenly there springs into view this vast terri tory, filled to overflewing with excitementu and mand, with rocks and every sort of bonesof contention. It Is a God-send to the Administration and to Congress-and above all. to the scramblers after the millions in the Treasury, who, while the country is being aved, will take I dantage of the times, get their email bills through. during the lulle in the storm, and poketthe uash. What alucky thing it is for them that this excitement is com ing in What a lucky thing it is all round. There is the President, badgered and hembugged on all sides, with a fire in his front and a fire in his rear-he draws a long breath, and thanks his stars that Nebraska is come up betweenhim and his fees. and that, as the bull runs after the red lag that is flaunted in his face, they will turn from him for a little while, and grant him a repiteat feast. There is Mr. Marcy-aanious,most anxious to keep his place-sworn at and most royally abued every day and twenty times every day-whose poltical friends, even from his own State, are compelled to may in Congress that they ae no admirers of his-who has been fearing a dis missal every morning these three months back.. He clntohes the arms of his chair and congratuiates himself that in the noise and confusion kicked up in Nebraska. he nill be overlooked, and suffered to remain with his Koestapen in one hand, and the spoils key in the other, and evenpermits himself to dream of times to come and other honors which he orete-not for himself, of course, but so that he may be able to reward his friends. There is Mr. Guthrie with his letter-writing propenei ties laughed at andridleuled from one end of the country to the other. He expects to be overlooked in the grand melee, And Mr. Cushing thinks he will be allowed to "rush out " foes and quaint expressions without being interfered with. And Me. Campbell will think that no complaints will be noticed about the irregularities of the mails. because all public attention is directed to Nebraska. and only a very few people will ears about receiving their letters. And so of good natured Mr. Dobbin. Itwillnot be necessary for him to think about our wretched Navy and about protecting our commerce all over the world. Nebraska is the question now-never mind any thing And there is Congress. Just look in that quarter How many members think they are going to pass through Nebraska to the White Houseo What a subject it willbe for speech making ! And. more important still, what an excuse it willbe for their not attending to the business of their constituents ! What a rlinchling excuse it will be for them, if, when chided for neglect, they reply, "lt is true that I may not have pushed the matter which you entrusted to my oare. with that assidulity which your interests demanded; but you must remember, my dear air, that at Washington we are in a great state of excite ment-it may be said, indeed, that we are upon the brink of an awful precipice-beneath, a frightful chasm yawns to engulph us. Our country-our common sountry that we love so much-is in danger, and I. like all other tree patriots, have bean expending my noble time in trying to arve us from this impending and most deplorable catus trephe.: And what is to be theende f it all? Where is this erest ing wave of public opinion, which is swelling constantly and becoming every moment more dangerous, going to break It will increasne in volume until the next Presi dential election, and sweep before it every vestige of that great party which came into power, backed by the volesn of more than a hundred thousand voters. but which. traitor to itself and the country, has sought to engeaft upon the policy of the Government the doctrine that the men who seek to destroy the country-who are meddlers and mischief-makers, secessionists and abolitionists free Boilers and socialits have all of them a right, and not only have the right bhut are entitled to the exclusive own. ership of all the patronage which the Government has to dispose of. Let Congress settle the matter as it may, the end will not be with them. It is going to be the great feature in the next election, and the struggle is going to be between the national men on the one side and the spoils seekers and freesoilers onthe other. These latter have already sounded the note of preparation. They are organileng. and their organization I apowerful one. Fanaticism and the spoiells ' They are strong elements, and their strength will be made use of to the uttermost. With a large vote in this State now, and in Pennsylvania and Ohio, witheut counting the northern States; with two powerful presses in this city already at work, with their propagandists, black and white, spreading their dostrines wherever they caught a erewd together-with all these means in their hands, is it too much to say that Seward and Hale are looking forward with bright hopes, and that there is no danger in the air ? Are the people preparing for the danger ? Are their eyes open to the coming struggle? The storm is brewing. It is muttering in the distnece. They can direot it. if they choose; and that they will direct it there is no doubt. It willolear away the rubbish ; honest men will rise to the surface once more, and, for a time at least, the political horizon wl be clear, and thin is something worth fighting Foreign Letter. E.rreoponlnrt of tit Erterent. FLOaosC, December 24. 1853. The beautiful climate of Italy is one of the greatest humbugs of this humbugging age. How it ever asquired such a selebrlty it is difficult to conceive. I have heard a solation offered, however, and perhaps it is the true one, vie: that Englishmen are at the bottom of the whole mat ter : that they fnd the climate of Italy so muoh milder and every way more beautiful than the continual mst and driz zle of London, that jumping at conclusions as they always do, they have imagined it the very finest climate in the world. at least all the books of travels published in Lon don for the last few centuries have so pronoaoeed it. Now there never was a greater mistake in the world. To saythat the weather in Italy is barely endurable is about a far as the truth can he stretched with any degree of safety. I believe that as much rain falls in Italy in win ter as i California or on the Isthmus. It is nothiughlt rain, rain from morning till night, and rain from night tillmorning. No consrumptive poreon should come to It aly. I know that many do come. and I also know that niee-teuthe of them some to die. If a person is not con fident about his lungs and must needs travel, let him go to ft. Augustine and winter-certainly the finest and most equable climate in the world-and perhaps they will And that Ponce de Leon was not so far out of the way In seeking for the Fountain of Youth among the ever. glades of Florida. Turin, of all the Italian cities, is, ifI may be allowed the expreession, the least Italianied. The language spoken there is a bbararous patois, and to a person returning from Tuscany the place has a cold and extraordinary aspect without any magnitleener to offset the prim Philadelphia-like regelarity of Its streets. It is, perhaps, the poorest in recollections of the past, of any city in Italy. Its history, whether ander the Em pire or during the middle ages, is almost a blank. Yet it I. daily nlreeeing in population, which now numbers some thing like a hundred and twenty thousand. The eapital of the King of Sardinia seems to have grown in propor tion with his States, andI do not believe it to be as it was formerly supposed the smallest in Europe. Sardinia itself is an odd assemblage of different people sad coun tries, a kind of political chequer work, which, in its dimin utive proportions, presents disparltes of soll and manners notles marked than in the largest empires. It unites thefertile plains of Piedmont, the frozen summits of the Alps, the add moauntains and forests of Sardinia proper ; and it has blended into one nation the indigent and faithful Savoyard, the rich and deceitful Genoese. the in trepid native of Piedmont. and the half African Sardinian. Turin has been repeatedly destroyed : the last ravages it sustained were from Francls I. in 1538, who demolished the extensive suburbs and reduced the limits of its ancient walls. The city is therefore absolutely denuded of any vestiges of antiquity whether claseical or medieval. Francis I.. the " Father of Lettere". al.o destroyed by his ravages the amphitheatre and several other Roman re mains. The houses are nearly all of brick intended for stucco-and not stuccoed-are buit on a large eale and are generally ornamented ever the windows and doors. Through the perpepective of the streets, the chain of Alps whieh surrounds the city Is eontintally in eight, and acrom the muddy Po (it wae muddy wheu T aw it-e muddy a the Mlii lppi) towers away uplntothe clouds the monastery of San Mihell-eertalinly one of the me remarkable monuments in Piedmont. The mountain on which it is situated can only hbe ascended on foot or on mules. The higher portion is covered with execedingiy fine groves of cheetut treed, through whiek you purae your winding path. Still higher up are m.et eluded and pdetoereegu farms, which with the woods constitute sal mostal the property that the rone opulent monetey rtaiins. Poor fellow !-hei doubtlers duerved it cnd more; but then It might have been a leg-and so h thank the Virgin for the forbeuranen by dedicating to her an exaet copy in wex of the miming member. Another man breaks his leg-he thenukse God that it Is nct his neck-and the .ameged ald to locomotion goesr to mwel the Virgins tomcal museeum. This remal to my mind the fact that in the Partheon at Perts, just on the high-altar is a little pigeon-house, said to contain the boner of St. lGeevieve-. the pete r in rnt ofw the iy. The were th first rolles I had apporcahed, and I naturally gazed upon the sehrineu which enlosoed them with feeligs somewhat allied to we. Unfortunaetely, however, fort my religious aspira. tions. I learnoed from a medltea frtiend who was with me. nd upon whose word I could plho reliance, that although there was in reeality something in the shape of relics oe teined in thid gilded box, they amounted In the sum total to two fbeheo, and what i more, that these ffneei both belonged to the ,oidh leg! But I tm digerelecing. Most of the clooe in Turin strike the same now. twice in se. eresion, and some, even as the clock of St. Phillipe Church, repeat every quarter the number of the hour oaest complesed. This inemant arnnouAcemenrt of time s it passs makee oner impatient and even sad ; one's life I seems thus to be hastiened long eand cipped intot die joinrted fregmente. The rime of the clork continually ammeoring out the hoer brings bank to one's recollection the romie motieon of Count Xoavler de tMaietr in his -Journey around my Chamber." when, after hearing it rtrike twelve three times, he exclaimed, stretchng out hise hand towards the clock: "ee, I know t1'e twelve--I Sknow tt- knrow t hut too well." The perineipl objecto of Interest to straenger In Turin are the ' Stie d'.rmeeo," Sthe Egyptia Museum eand the Churcth of the Buperge, the buroal-pl.te .f the Sardinian Kings. The m.serm of of ancient arms formed by King Charles Albert near his apartmente is very rich and very well arranged-it is tid, I know not with what justise, to be the finest collection of ar moer in the world. Perhaps so, but the jewel alone on the e armor contained in the Sulta'e Mueum at fonteatinople are worth, intrinsically. many timee more than the Sardin eian coeletio: and then the Turkish Museum of Arms is the texponent and rewaod of Turkish valor, while the Sardinian bau been fairly purchaseebod with gold. There is a sit of armor belonging, or that belonged. to ttenry if St. Orromes a kined of trophy her ; but. einstead of lbeing the rit of renquest, as one would nelaturally suppose, in the battle of St. Quietec. it was purchased at Pare. like most of thei rest. The gyptlaun Museum Is. ertainly the fiest in Europe. It was purehased by King Carlo Felice in 1821 after manuy but uuccefult negotiations bd hbeen enterir ed into for the purpose of securineg it for the Britishe Museum. The article usred in the various budinres of life are numorouo and most interesting. Among the im plemente ofa lady's toilet, I noticed two little ivory doge. exquisitely sculptured. one of which srtill retainer the thread that weas bound on it more than two thouand years ego. There are ao emany specimens of agriculturale Implements and arms ; eveeraln models of plows ; yoke for oxen; arrowsr, helmets, et., and a fine seimitur of bronze. But what particularly attracted my attention ws the celebrated Isaioe Tade. It eis a tablt of bronze of bout four feet by three, rovered with hieroglyphimc and figures of Egyptia deities. It has orely puozszred the brains of most antiquarians. One has discovered on It the whole mythology of the Edda. Another has trans lated it into esubstantial Lantien, aud found thart it co tned ae admirable therory of the creation of the world. Still another has extracted from it rather lengthy system of theology. So much for Arohiology. As I gazed on all these musty relise. I could not help imnginieg that the day will come when the remains of all our monuments of marble and bronze, also the magnificent evidences of our power and glory, will be shown it the museum of some now savage people. in a desert yet unknown near a lake cf which we have never heard, in the bosom of impene. trable and gloomy toreete, or of lofty mountains hardly dissevered. The Youngs and Champolliona of another world will. In their turn. write dissertations, and obetinte. ly defend their different systems, and will hardly know whether to regard our present civilization as fable or history. B. GarAT FRloo In Tx.essas.-Oar Tennessee exchanges contain accounts of damage done to property by the high water in the rivers in every direction over the State. Se veral lives have been lost near Nashville by the high wa ter, and much distress has been occasioned to the poorer lahabitants in that city, overflowing the lower part of the town.
