The combatants were stripped of their super tnors garments, and stationed a pole's length apart mash stood with hise pole erect, firmly grasped in both handl and at the word glven by the seconds they went to work. It was a fine thing to behold, that fighbt wth hoop poles! The duelists displayed considerable solence for amateurs in that kind of fighting, cutting, thrusting and lashing their weapons, much as we read the champions of by.gone days used to do with their hugo two-handed swords. Still, they eanceedsd in battening each other so verely, and would have made a bloody aaire of t hobt for the intereferenoe of the seconds, who, upon a point of punetlllo, took a bout with the poles themselvee. The wounded honor of all was healed at last, but it will be some days before their swelled and bruised heads and sholderse are healed. This is no fancy sketch, but an ac tool oecurrenoe, narrated to us by a person who witnessed It. We commend the attentionof all who are In trouble or feel their honor toin danger. HIGHWAY OBBEao Y.-We mentioned a few days sncen the arrest, in the Third Distriot, of a cob driver named William Deno, upon a charge of attempting to extort twenty-five dollars.from a gentleman for a ride in his cab to the Lake by the Old Shell Road. Deno was sent to the Parish Prison on the following day. and on rnesday his confederate, a man named Robert Forbee, as arrested, examined before Recorder Senneneau, and nt to the same prison, to await trial upon a charge of highway robbery. The following are the particulars of the case : Mr. Frederick Barrett, a citlson of Oeorgia. heo had been in the city but a short time, and not suf8 olently long to become acquainted with the rascalities to whtoh strangers are exposed, had oceaslon to return home. Be fell in with Forbes by some means, and, as the latter eapressed an intention of going to Mobile, he accepted him as a traveling companion, and they started for the tobile mail boat together. It was aboutllo'look in the lorenoon ; yet Forbes persuaded Barrett that they would be too late for the malt boat, representing that the last train of care had gone, and that their only chance of reaching the boat in time would be to hire a cab and dash down the Old Shell Road at top speed. They came opon and entered the cab No. 187, of which Deno was the driver, who agreed to take them down for a dollar and a half each. After getting to a safe distance beyond the oity, about mid-way between the toll-gate and the Lake, Deno soddenly stopped the cab, and turning to Barrett with the greatest effrontery, told him he wouldn't go a +tep forther unless he paid him twenty-dre dollars. Forbes then pretended to get soared; and upon Barrett's indignant refusal to pay the amount, Deno seised him by the collar and threatened to take his life; Barrett being a cripple, (from a cotton.-gin wound in his right hand:) was not able to cope with Deno, and offered to compro mise by giving him five dollars Deno refused, and pro ceeded to make all khinds of furious demonstrations; Barrett then became scared, and, as Forbes seemed to be soared also, and made a feint of paying Deno twenty-five dollars, he drew forth his wallet and surrendered to him twenty-three dollars, all there was in it, with the excep tion of a small gold piece, which he managed to secrete. itaving got poseession of the money, Deno forced him out of the rab, and turned back to town, taking Forbes with him-leaving Mr. Barrett in the road, by this time some what awake as to his own verdancy and the rascality of some other people. lHe walked on to the Lake, found the mail boat would not leave till late in the afternoon, and returned to the city by the care to make hie complaint to the police. Deno woeas found at the depot with his cab, on the look-out, perhape, for another country gentleman, and was arrested, as we have already announced. Recorder densenean issued a warrant for PorSe , who was brought before him, and was compelled, by the Recorder's puz sing questlens, to confees, after ail his smartness, that he wa the owner of the cab into which he had lured his viotim. These gents will have to stand trial in the Crim inal Court for their very smart and brave inancial persa tioe. Gentlemen from the country can not be too wide awake when they come to NewOrleans. NOT UcDER ARREST.-It is true that Henry I Albrecht, the keeper of the house No. 72, Old Levee, Third n District, in whiob the Oetnean children perished of desti tutlon, was arrested during the Coroner's inquest there on Monday evening; bht he was immediately liberated, to the Coroner not having power to detain him. We state tie this because his arrest was mentioned in several of the other paper., but not his discharge; which leave. the public under the impression that he Is to come up for trial. We were surprined to hear yesterday, that this a fellow io paid by the German Immigrant Soclety for keep- N log that honue, and lodging poor immigrants as they rrive ln the olty. If this be true, the Sooiety owe it to rhemeelves and to their poor countrymen, to look after heir agents a little closer hereafter. We were fnrther. F more informed, that deaths from destitution are by no mansa rare among the immigrant lodging houses in that p, part of the city. Ifthe Immigrant Boaleties are power te* to take proper care of those they assume to care for, D It would be a good idea forsome of the other benevolent F ooleties or the city authorities to interfere in the matter. We hope we may never he called upon again to record a p case like that of the Octneans. CAUGHT AT IT.-M. Goldsmith, Jacob Keroh, 2. Welch and M. Karton are under arrest in the Fourth g, District for keeping junk-shops without license. RBeor der Jackeon will doubtiess read the ordinaneorsto them, F and charge them for the same. He was looked up for examination. For the a benefit of any one who may have lost uob a watch, we a will state that it is a very heavy and valuable treble-case b English watch, marked in the case, " .
