If this be so, we are glad that it is no worse i though rwe would like to know how so much excitement could have been ot up on o small a foundation ' he Cobblehs sailed on Monday morning, without Petersononasouy of her falcers being troubled--so Mr. MeNial says. He was honorably cleared by the owner of the olgars appearing and swearing that he gare them to him for the u-e of hiomself nn ttompanolons, in aokonwlrdg. meot of their services as firmaen on the morning in quers tion. It In too bad that an honest man should thus be arrested ns a thief, for aooepting a welt earned prerent. It shows, however. that it it a bad thing to rreesive bulky presents during a tire, and should be guarded agaitst hereafter; a, there are sure to hbe thbievesr carrying awey plunder on uch oocsions, and if the watebmen stopped tohbear their explanations, they would all escrape. It was hard that Mr. P. should ha arrested ; stlllwe cannot con. eider that ofnicer Zeigler actad wrong in the least. Greena were eramr ited before Recordar Bright yesterday, on a charge of having asraulted and attempted to kill Edward Jacobs. the daguerrootypist, in hin saloon on Cnmp street, on the l8th nst. The taetimony showed that Mrs Boyd. with her infant child and a lady froend, visited the saloon on the previous day in order to have the ohild's picturae takeno. Afteirfour or five efforts, Mr. Jacobs failed to produce a eattfaetoey likeness; he argued that one of the pictures wall gOip n . t excited and offensive manner Mrs. Boyd tot fltl an did not know how to treat ladies; he replied that ho did know how to treat ladies; wrhich they aon.tf..id meaning, that he did not consider them ladlae. They then retired; and Mrs. B. informed her husband of what had taken plane. Next morning Mr. Boyd, accompanied by his friend Mr Green, called upon Mr Jacobe, and the former without ceremony, or asking any explanation, tknocked him down; but it did not ap pear that he uaod the sword-cane which he had, although it came open in the scoufle which followed. Jacobt, upon extricating himself, ran into a batk room to get his pistol, aud on returonin, found Boyd absent, but Green still there; and, supposinlg that he had been a party to the at tack, made at him with his pistol, when he drew a knife and stood on thedefeasive. Gre-n, it appeared, did not know when he acoompanied Boyd that he contempiated an attack; be was requested by Boyd logo and be a wit ness ot an explanation he intended demanding. The ladies in the case were introduced to prove Mr. Jaiobs' ineulting demeanor, and Mr. J. introdauced his assistant, Str. Brownla, to prove not only that ha did not speak to the ladies in an insulting manner, but that during hie thirteen years' experience as t daguerreotypit it had been his uniform prattlo to treat every body with respect. Mr. J. defended himself before the IReoorder, and with cooni derable ability. The Recorder said, that although he himself might have struck the plaintiff under similar cir cametancre, still the law would not b-a r him out in it. and he would have to crmmat Mr. Boyd for a~ault and battery under a reduced bondof $000.
