WHY WE ARE FRIENDLY TO THE CzAR. - The London Times geouts for American syltsthy with the Russian cause in the fbllowing manner: Pantting aside ihe old feeing )owards Eng land, the positive sympatify for Rusaia rests only on some supposed analogies between her positIon and their own. Russia is a qew coaa try; gIe is a great one, And will be a greater; she P a immoense territory, which she is peo plinihle population in Westersf Europe is stationary or actually dsecases. She has a decaying State on her Southern boundary, of which she has taken much and rants more. A few years ago the Americans seized a pro vince of their weak neighbor; an alliance of France and England has projected, which, if carried out, would have involved the Union in a long and dadgerous struggle. The Russians ocoupied a similarly sioatsed territory; the alliance was completed, is most powerful, and may last to interfere in the affairs of trans-At lontle Turkey. We believe sunh ideas as these influence a large class of American politicians, but they are Obviously too imaginary to be the cause of more titan pamphlets and orations. Russia may be sure that we have not a Poland at oar.side, nor an earnest enemy in the great community we have founded. * The Times might also have informed its rosad ers that Americans copld not be expected to segard with favot an arliinoe whose first fruits had been interference in their concerns, and a direct threat of enforoidg the balance of power prinoipl in the Western hemisphere. OPELOUSAS RAILROAD.-Tho special or accom modation train of the Qpelousas railroad, which heretofore left New Orleans every Saturday evenipg at 4 o'clock, and returned on Monday morning by 10, has been discontinued. The hours of arrival at and departure from Tiger rille, the present terminus of the road, have not yet been fixed. A steamboat is running in con nection with the road at Tigerville, for all in termediate landings on Bayou Teche as far up as New Iberia, and all the travel 'which, previ ous to the opepng of the rad to Tigerville, went via. the Lakes and Donalasonville to New Or leans, has been Aranslfrred to the railroad, which, besides being shorter and more expedi tious, is also atted.:with much less pense. -[Thibodaux Minerva, 1th. Talbot, from Indianola via Galveston, we have later dates from Texas and important news frsm Mexico. Tle Galveston News of Saturday last has the following para graphs: The health of our city continues good-no yellow fever. The weather is fine, but cool, and a general quietude prevails In the retail trade there is some activity, consequent on the change of season, and the receipt of new goods, but the wholesale business is dull. We are forced to believe that there is very little money ecsral circulation, and mchanies are Ir ie a r r iv a l o f c o u n tr y c u s to m e r s fo r . htyi i A despatch was received e on Thu stating that the Trinity h n five feet a;i Cinsinnati, and continued4 g The Houston Telegraph says the receipts of cotton at Houston this season have far exceeded the corresponding period of any previous year. The wagon transportation is totally inadequate, bat the Galveston and ited River Railroad will be completed from that city toCypreos Creek, over the worst road between that pace had every point tributary toit, by thefirst or middle of January, and thereby diminish the dificulties of transportation fully one-fifth to the aggre gate of the business of the place. In an extra of the Galveston Civilian we find a letter from Capt. Callahan, in command of the expedition against the Indians, addressed to the people of Texas. The letter is dated Eagle Pass, Oct. 4. lie narrates his movements from the time he set out up to one day after he had, in a sharp engagement on Mexican terri tory, defeated a.large force of Indians and Mex ioans. COptain Callahan'e force conesited of 111 men-volunteers and rangers. He deter mined to pnth directly into the Mexican coun try and ;estroy the ,ipan encampment, and accoidingly he crossed the Rtio Grande at Eagle Pass and marched directly towards the town of San Fernando, about thirty-five miles west of t~he river.. At noon on the Id they encamped on asmalf stream about ten miles from the Rio Grande, antl up to this time the Mexicannu thorities and citizens had shown them much kinddess and pretended to favor the expedition i ; many had even offered to enlist, but fortunately I were not received. TheCaptain thus desoribes the battle: : After nooning it an hour or two, we marched on toward San Fernando, beyond which were the Indian camps. Having proceeded some ten miles along the highray to the city, over a widely extended prairie, about three o'clock in the af ternoon, while marching leisurely along,' we descried three bp en approaching us from a mot of timber a mile to the northward. At first these men. oere not noticed, we suppos ing them tote Mexican herdsmen--but on their gpproaching within two hundred yards of us wfr dlsdovered them to be Indian chieftains, reo-'" dressed and painted for battle; and they sere' eviaently striving to decoy us from our position Forming my men in a line along the road, waited for the enemy to begin the battle-for by this time large numbers of them had emerged fromthe timber, seemnigly with the intention of attacking us; they soon spread out in front of us, and to our right and left, to the amount of several hundredhprsemen, and commenced to fire on us. About this time one of my men fired on a chief, about two hundred yards dis tant, and broke a leg of his horse. Perceiving that the enemy, composed of both Indians and Mexicans, were trying to outtlhnk us, I ordered my men to charge, which was execuied in fine style, and thirty of' the enemy were slain. Whilst making our charge the leftr flank of the enemy which extended for near a half mile, cam, in on our tear and opened on us a very severe fire, during which four of our gllaont men were killed. The front and right faink on which we charged, after a galling fire lied before us, leav Ing us in possession of the position which it ways our object and determination to gain. Then we discovered that our enemy numbered some six or seven hundred, as all their footmen were con cealed in the timber and had not advanced itn view on the prairie My men formed in a strong position beneath the bank of a small creek, Ion which the enemy had been encamped, and their whole force coming up against us, we continued the battle for about three houtrs, when they fled in the direction of San Fernando, leaving as we heard this evening, some eighty-five killed andi with the loss of one hundred wounded. This we learn front some Miexicans who were engaged in the battle, and from other sources since my re port to his Excellency, the lion E M Pease The same Mexicans have also informed me that the actual number of our enemy was seven hun dred and fifty men. After retreat of the enemy, which Was about dark, we supposing that they would come on us again before day, with large reinforcements we lell back to the Ihio Grande, where we would he safe from any number oc men and any quantity of artsllery they might bring against us. Approaching the town of Piedras Negras about sunrise, we took possession of it, and now occupy a position opposite Eagle Pass on the west bank of the Rio Grande. The men who were killed of my command, are, W. II. Clopton and August Smith of my compa ny Rangers. Willis Jones, of Capt. lHenry' company, and I. R. Holland, of Capt Benton's company of4 olunteers. The men wounded are John Gregory (dangerously,) of Capt. Henry' company, Capt. Nat. Benton, slightly, end let Libut. Henry B King, slightly. Patton slightly, and Eustace Rentonmortally, of my company. My men, rangers and volunteers, conducted themselveu with commendable bravery d uricg the entire acti6n, with t~p exceptions, vho in gloriously fled from the battle field and crososd the Rio Grande before they tfopped. I am now occupying the townwft Piedras Ne gras, opposite Eagle Pass, and intend to hold the position until reinforced from the settlemonto. The Mexicans have basely betrayed us, by pre tending to favor our expedition against the Li pans and attempting to draw us ltots a snre .t our late battle ground, which would have sIe coededbut for the bravery of my men aguinst overwhelming odds. I informed the prominent men of this pilce this morning, that we did not come here to tight the Mexicans, but to w ip and exterunnate the Indians, aod that we do 0ot dt sire to fight them, although they have kille and wounded eeveral of our best men. I have old thoem that they Iteust deliver up to us the Indians, otherwise tl1 Texians will make Tnous responsible for the murder of their wives and children and the depredations upon their property. It is now olear that they combine with and protect the Indians. I have tried to explain to them the iqjustice of their course, and have advised them that we.will invade their country and burn the last hf their towns, if they continued to protect and fraternize with this band of outlaws, whceTo hands are still reeking in the blood of innocent women and children, who have recently faolln on thaseil of Texas, beneath the tomahawks At relentlesotsavages. We molested none eo teiri property until we found them fightiog ,idJ by side with the Indians, whose demoouia htnds are still wet with the blood of Texion women and childrent And we have sinac troubled nothing save what was necoesary for our own support and safety. lind we supposed the Mexicans would have united with the Indians against us, we would never have crossed into their country with our number of met--but we are now here, and intend to hold a footing until something is accomplished. The Captain makes a stirring appeal to his countrymen for assistance, nid says: We are well fortified hee, with cannon for our protection, and have support at hand suflt eient to shield us from drstruction till we re ceive reinforeemesrte. How Mr. Taylor expressed himself on this subject is the matter in dispute. MIr Elam asserts that he (Taylor) dir ted his condemnatory remarke atgainet the folgn ers without atn qualijicaibons.
