BUsrNEss.-The general operations in trade were niot f so great an extent as the day previous-not that the late advices from Europe had any effect on the market, but after weeks, yea'months of extraor dinary activity, it is natural that a decline or falling off should appear.. There is, however, a good deal of business doing on the levee. With the cotton presses and warehouses it is, as usual at this season, brislk. The arrivals of several ine freighting vessels tend to relieve all apprehensions of high- freights for the remainder of this season, and our Western, friends and customers can send forward their produce with the assurance that the very best prices going will be obtained for it. FRno SALT LAXE.--We have Salt Lake dates to the 30th of January. The snow in the vicinity has rendered earlier communication impossible. The mail which left on the lot of January was obliged to return on account of its depth. The winter has been unusually severe and numbers of cattle have died of starvation. We givein this morning's edition, a great amount of intelligence frommany portions of the earth. The most exciting news, however, is from Central Ameri ca,'and, such as it is, will be read with profound interestby hundreds, if not thousands, of our popu lation. For our part, we place little reliance upon the neivs brought by the Empire City. It bears the marks of improbability upon its face. And to this must be added the very telling fact, that we have only heard a one-sided version of the story. Boasting enough, savagery enough, and butchery enough, are record ed-nineteen prisoners of swar having been shot in cold blood--to satisfy the fiend who directed Famiun's massacre in Texas, long time ago. Amplevengeance has since been taken for that atrocious wholesale murder; and ample retribution will, in the long run, be visited upon the mongrel exterminators of Ameri cans inCentral America. . It is possible, not probable, tihe mongrels have tri umphed, bythe aid of Eglish officers, weapons and money, indirectlyrendered-but the triumph will be shortand fleeting. No repulse can stop, for any great length of time, the progress of the car of " manifest destiny." Southward the star of empire marches on its way. Delays and obscurations may take place. Such incidents are common to all great enterprises, but they rarely ever vitiate the magnificent, final result, ihich shines all the brighter from its misfor tunesand eclipses, ms~~r o :-.~ nL~:.l nnmanimnatr nt than hostin The Costa Rcican ofiial accounts or toe scctie are not probable, for many good and solvent reasons. The idea that four hundred Americans, occupying a splendid military position, surrounded by stone walls, thoroughly armed, and knowing that victory was life and defeat death, could be charged upon and defeated in " fourteen minutes," by five or six hundred Costa Rica "greasers, " is supremely ridiculos--not worth consideration. Five or six thousand ene mies may have worn them out in a protracted and continuous struggle, but it required fully that number, unless there was treason, or gross and criminal negli gence in the camp. Four hundred Americans, well armed and equally placed, are superior to any two thousand " patriots" that can be found south of the Rio Grande. All experience and history demon strates this to be the truth. The fact of the matter is, if there he any truth in the CostatRica reports, Col. Schlessinger's command must have been taken completely by surprise. Ouno .other grounds an, the rout be accounted for. It is not likely this was the case, to say the least; for three or four hundred men, knowing that their lives depended upon their eyes, their rifles and their stout arms, would not be apt to go to sleep in the heart of a hostile country where implacable enmity pre vailed. Then, again, the dates of the manifestoes of the Costa Rican Generals do not accord with the intelli gence conveyed by our correspondent and published by us on the 11th inst. The Costa Rica dispatches are dated 20th and 21st ult.,oannouncing a stupendous victory it must have occupied some time in marching to achieve. Our letters come up to the 21st. On the 18th alt., at 11 o'clock, P. M., our correspondent, writing from San Juan del Norte, stated that Col. Schlessinger had made a rapid movement upon the town of Zupoa, where five hundred of the enemy were stationed, and that they fled, together with the inhabitants of the place ; and that, when the courier left "the Colonel was making every plrepration for a rapid night descent upon Gnua-Caste, the principal city of the department of that name." Afterwrards, 'writing from Virgin Bay at 10 o'clock, P. It., on the hight of the 21st tlt., our correspondent-and he en joysthe best means foracqairing reliable information communicated nothing in regard to the battle. which imust, according to the Costa Rica text, have taken place on the 20th in theafternoon l "Put this and that together," and a very large margin is opened for the imagination. Any how, we are willing to "wait for the wagon," and believe that the cause of Central American regeleractionis not lost. The most brilliant morn succeeds tihe darkest night. So will it be in this case, unless the administration at Washington, with spaniel-like subserviency, allows Great Britain to "crush out," and indirectly murder, some thousands of natives of the United States. Lnter from OHavana. The arrival of the stearashbip Empire City, Capt. Windle, has placed us in receipt of Havana dates to the 10th instant. Our files are complete, but contain nothing of in terest or importance. The U. S. sloop-of-sar Saratoga arrived at Havana on the 10th, and also the steamer Illinois on the samre day. Thie GOrgo Law, with Pacific mails and $1,500,000 in treasure, arrived at the same time. MI. Godard was to make an ascent in the city for the benefit of a public charity. A party took place on board IH. B.M. ship Bos enwen, at which all the authorities of the city were present, and which was also attended by the officers of other national vessels in port. The Diario has an article concerning the measure introduced to Congress by fir. Jamer, of Rhode Island, for the farther regulation of our commercial affairs. The four interests intended to be created by Mr. James's bill are filly stated and pronounced unfair and injurious to Cuban commerce. MI. Boudrians, who undertook an unsuccessful balloon ascent in this city, attempted one in HIavana. After flying over a few houses, he had a timid descent, at which the populace were highly indignant. Paul Julien and Amelia Patti had arrived in Ila vana, and were about to give a series of concerts. Nothing of a political nature is transpiring upon the island beyond some speculations as to the success of the filibusters under Wadker. Later fronII Texas. By the arrival of tile steamc hip Mexico we have dates from Galvesto n to the 12th. There is nothing of much importance in their columns. The Seguin Mercury and other papers are com plaining of the myriads of grasshoppers which make their appearance in all quarters, and it is feared they will seriously injure thle crops. A fine now vessel, built on the San Jacinto river, has arrived at Galveston, dcsigned as a Corpus Christi packet. The San Antonio Ledger of April 5thll, speaking concerning Indian outrages, says that depredations are being committed on the Medina, and many horses have been stolen. Parties had started in pur nit. A party from San Antonio, under lir. Devine, went in quest of the delpredators, but htad not returned. Anothler party shot two or three iof the enemy whom they caught in the bush. Maj.
