Concerning that which has tranopired in the world's histoiry on corre.spndine days in pastl ears, with I other matter pertinent ithereto, prepared espresslyt for the readers of the Double Sheet Crescent. Brighter and more glorious, sunnier and pleasanter than their predecessors, are the days that part the curtains which veil us from the coming week. So many angelic scene-shifters are they, if rightly un derstood, ever laboring to wrest from Nature some broader view for our gratification. Their fair features shine in an immortal youth, wreathed with the same smiles and dimples as when first they, wondering, saw the world. Let us hope that the cornucopia at their side may pour forth an abundant fortune. MIonday, April .--Sts. Vitalis,Didymus, Theo dore and Patricins, the latter a Pruosian, and the only Prussian, are named for this day. The cuckoo-pink, dedicated to St. Didymus and Theodore, is the emblem: During the expedition against the Pequots, in the olden colonial times, the English discoved New Haven, Conn., which, in 1637, was settled by a colony from the Bay State, who keptthis day, which happened to he their first Sunday, uasder a large oak tree, while Mr. Davenport, their pastor, preached to them. In 1760, NI. Levi approached Quebec from Montreal, with six frigates, to recapture it from the English. Gen. Murray marched out with 3,000 men, and, on this day, the battle of Sillisery-three miles above the city-was fought, and the English were defeated, with a loss of 1,000 men. The English retreated to Quebec, which place the French beseiged. An Eng lish squadron arrived in the middle of Hay, took the French squadron, and raised the seige. In 1788, the Convention of the State of IMaryland assented to the Constitution and joined the American confederation. Tuesday, April 29-Saints Peter, Robert, Hugh and Fiachna are the saints, from 630 to 1252, A. D. The herb Robert, dedicated to St. Robert, is the flower. In 1770, Dr. John Ash died, whose Complete En glish Dictionary, until the appearance of Todd's John son, was the best extant. In 1822, Sir Isaac Heard, garter king-at-arms died, aged 01, remarkable for his knowledge of heraldry, from the earliest times. In our owna country, no great event has to be chronicled. Wednesday.jpprll 30.-Sts. Catharine,tMeaximus, James and Marian, from 250 to 1380, are the saints. The cowslip, dedicated to St. Catherine, is the em blem. Louisiana was admitted into the Union in 1811. The name was given to the territory in honor of Louis XIV. It was discovered by DeSoto in 1541. After being owned by several European powers, it was ceded to the United States by France, in 1a03, for $15,000 e0a. Several States have been formed out of what nwas the old territory of Louisiana. . This day paves the way into SMay-the most beau tiful of all the spring months : celebrated in every land, sung by every poet. Tihe month takes its name I from Mala, the brightest of the Pleiades. The old Anglo-Saxons used to call it Trimilki. according to one grave author, for that they then began to milk their kine three times a day! Mlilton has an ode to the month, in which he speaks of C" The foweryv- 3s, who. from her treen le p throwss The yellow eowslip ani the l ptle primroer." Tennyson, too, sings his sweetest strains in that uni versal ballad: "1'm to hn Qiueen of the 1lay, mother, I'm to bh Queen or the elay." The references to the month are, however, too nu merous to be repeated, and all as geacefutlas the pleasant time of which they treat. Thlursday, May 1.-Sts. Philip, James and St. Sigismund, King of Burgundy, are the saints. The tulip, dedicated to St. Philip ; the red companion and the red bachelor's button, dedicated to St. James, are the flowers. The observances with which May day has been kept, the world over, from time imemenmorial, are too numer ons to be repeated. Every one's own reading will suggest the MIay pole and the May flower, with the Morris dance and the thousand pleasant amusements that welcome in the breathing period of the year. Of the events which have occurred in the month with Sout accurate dates attached, or within our reach, we can mention a few. In 1497, John Cabot, a Vene tian by birth, sailed under the patronage of Henry VII, and discovered a land which he termed Prima Vista, judged to have been the island of Newfound land. In 1810, Congress passed an act excluding British and French armed vessels from American waters. In 1811, a naval engagement occurred between the frigate President and the British sloop-of-war Little Belt, in which the latter had eleven killed and twenty four wounded, and the former lost but one. In 1936, the New York banks suspended specie payment and all the others followed suit. In the same year several Creek towns and tribes joined the Semimoles and commenced a war which lasted until the administration of Van Boren. Friday, tay 2.-St. Athanasus, Patriarch of Alexandria, A. D. 373, is the patron of the day. The Charlock, dedicated to him, is the flower. ' In 1519, Lonardi da Venci, the painter, died. In 1780, a committee from Congress visited the army and reported to Congress that the " army was ounpaid for five mouths ; that it seldom had more than six days' provisions inadvauce, and was, on several oc Scasions, for sundry successive days, without meat; that the medical department had neither sugar, coffee, nor tea; wine, nor spirituous liquors ; that every de partment was without money, and had not even the "shadow of credit left. SnSaturday, MIay 3.-The invention or discovery - of the Holy, Cross. 320, and St. Alexander, Pope, 119, are the observances of the day. i The poetic Narcisso, dedicated to the invention of the Cross, is the flower. The invention or the Cross, explained by a com mentator to signify the finding of the Cross, belongs, as a festival, to both the English and Romish churches. In 1845. Florida was admitted into the Union. Suenday, ItMay 4.-St. tMonica, 3S7, and St. Go sdard, 1036, are the patron sa~tts. The stock gilly-liower, dedicated to St. 3Monica, is tihe emblem. In 1471, the battle of Tewksbury, Gloucestershire, England, was won by Edward IV, over the L .ncaste rians. In 1677, Dr. Ierac Barron, an eminent mathemati cian and learned divine, died. I In l?75 John James Borthelmy, aethor of the Stravels of Anachtrsia, died. In addition to what we have already published con cerning matters and things in Mexico, we glean from our exchanges, some additional items of interest to those who have relations with that coantry. The house of Baron, Forbes & Co., of Tepic, has suffered the displeasure of the government and Mlr. Forbes, U. S. Consul at Tepic, has been seit out of the country. ir. Collin, the manager of their fac tory, was arrested and kept in confinement four days. These outrages will, probably, induce the interference of our government, as they are constantly occurring, and are such as no nation can overlook. The mot important matter that reaches us from Mexico, by this arrival, is the news of a difficulty between the government and the Catholic clergy, which is complicated with the difficulties of the for eign ministry. The course of conduct pursued by President Comonfort towards the clergy of Puebla, offended the Sardinian minister and the representa tives of Catholic countries, so far that all, with the exception of the French minister, only, had demand ed their passports. It is stated, as a reason why the French minister was not involved in the trouble, that he had been previously instructed to protect the SPope's Nuncio. The Picayune has some private information from Vera Cruz, on the 10th, which we copy : "Order reigns in the hepublic. The bands of dia effected in the states of Mexrico and Michoaaeon have been overcome. Something, however, has just oc cured. which nmayhave important results. The Goer ermonent has ordered the holders of bonds of the Span ish debt to deliver them up, or should give security for their value, under pain of embargo. The bonds were surrendered by a convention equivalent to a treaty. It is feared that if this Government does not yield, as is just, since it has no eight to act in this manner, dif riculties may arise between Spain and Mexico." It is stated that a deree is about to be issued, comr manding the Board of Public Credit to issue bonds tc the amount of $12,000,000, and providing that will these bonds alone, payments shall be made in the cus toms and other government offices; that the salt Board shall pay into the public treasury freom $400,00 to b(i00,000 per month, out of the pcoceeds of tht sale of the said bonds, and that the balance shall hi placed to the public credit. TRADE DOLL AND FEARS OP THE PESTILENCE IN NhORinL.--The fbllowing extract from a business letter, dated Norfoltk, April, 14, and addressed to a gentleman is New York, shows that apprehensions are being entertained of a reappearance of the Fever : " The appearance of watrm weather, with the low prices prevalent tbr grain, oer main dependence. makes unusual dullness in tmrade. A looking ahead for fear of a return of the pestilence of last season troubles the minds of many. We hope it may be averted." FATAL DAYs IN YELLOW FEYER.-Dr. J. D. Bryant, one of the volunteer physicians in the Portsmouth, Va., pestilence, has punblihed a pamphlet about the disease. He remarks that the fifth day of the diseast was especially fatal, and partiularly dreaded both b5 the patients and their friends. During one period a the epidemic, this day was scarcely less the cause o panio than the direase itself. * s * The number of deaths on the fifth day could no have been fewer than thirty per cent.
