Arnold furnished the follow ing prescription for a child saflering from a slight fever: 5 grainsof calomel and 5 grains of pulverized rhubarb. This was to be taken in a powder, and three hours after, the following mixture: 2 scruples chlorate of potaes., 4 drachms each honey of squills and syrup of lemon, l} ounces distilled anniseed water. The druggist accidentally mixed cyanide of potass., a deadly poison, in the preparation, and the first dose killed the child in ten minutes. The phy sician was immediately called, and to show that death had not been caused by the medicine, he swal lowed a teaspoonful of it, and soon feeling the symp toms of poison, ran to the drug store and took a powerful 'emetic. The father of the child entered the store and charged the druggist with causing its death, who, confident that the prescription was harm. less and correctly compounded, swallowed some of it himself and was a dead man twenty minutes after wards. BArTIonRs H aoRBon.-At last accounts Baltimore harbor had been closed by ice so long that there were, lying at the mouth of Patapsco river two hundred vessels unable to reach port, and the crews exposed to great suffering from cold. Some of the Baltimore merchants have purchased the steamer Susquehanna, fitted her up as an ice-breaker.and towboat, and re christened her " Ice King." S e Mmb odaystpgrmlIue1 • . r ..... .
