WEDNESDAY MORNING, JUNE 10, 1857. Re, Recent PaFuhIlleISons. W We have received from the authors, through Mr. Ne Steel, No. 60 Camp street, copies of the following new books: ed CAnarr HARaRITOn'ON ; or Scenes in New Orleans. A Novel, by Millie Mayfeld. New York: A. Atchi- er son. of "Millie Mayfield" is a nom de plume that has be- te come quite familiar to the New Orleans public, of rce late. It has appeared over bits of poetry and prose we sketches, contributed to different city papers--the ter Crescentamongthe number-which have commanded A: considerable attention, the poetry being far above v0 mediocrity, and the sketches spirited and entertaining. mi Who " Millie Mayfield"' is, however, we have never tie been able to ascertain; and our adherence to our in variable rule, not to publish anything anonymous, however excellent it might be, compelled nus to de- Ni cline receiving further contributions, after having de- W viated so far as to publish several pieces, in the hope D: of inducing "Millie" to throw off her mask. For w all this, however, we cannot withhold the praise that W is due to "Millie Mayfield." She is a charming writer, in both prose and poetry, and we consider her an honor to Southern literature. In the novel before fo us, " Carrie Harrington," we discover the freshness of thought and feeling, and the brilliancy of style, which have gleamed upon the public intheoccasional di pieces of the authoress, and though we have not read of the story through,we are ready to vouch for its beauty S and truthfulness to life, and to cordially recommend di it to our reading public. " Carrie Harrington" is a handsome volume of 350 pages. 4( INDEX AND CONcoRDANCc OF THE CIVIL CODE OF LoerS.!A ; with IReferences to the Revised Sta- T tutes of 1856, and the Acts of the State at large. By Byron F. Cook, of the New Orleans Bar. New c Orleans : J. B. Steel. Here is something of great value to the legal pro feasion. The numerous subjects of litigation are ar- ol ranged alphabetically, and after each are references, 0 by which all that is necessary to be known may be found, amid the voluminous pages of our Civil Code. i A neat book of 220 pages, in law binding. Through Mr. B. M. Norman, we have received the C following : THE AuMERcaN MIERCHANT, in Europe, Asia, and Australia. By George Francis Train, of Boston; a with an introduction by Freeman Hunt, A. M., Ed itor of the Merchants' Magazine. New York: G. P. Putnam & Co. f This is a book of a new kind, which must meet with high favor in a commercial community like New Orleans. It is a most spirited and entertaining book of travel, which will charm any reader, whilst the different facts which the author took in with his mer cantile eye, will render it doubly acceptable to a large class of the public. It consists of a series of letters t from Java, Singapore, China, Bengal, Egypt, the I Holy Land, the Crimea and the Battle Grounds, England, Melbourne. Sidney, and other places. A morw varied book of travel has seldom been offered to the reading world. It is a handsome volume of 500 pages. THe \WATcnT MAN. By James A. Maitland, author of "The Wanderer," " The Old I)octor:," etc., ahd editor of the New York Dispatch. Philadelphia : T. B. Petersun. A story of humble life, the hero being an actual personage, a policeman well known in New York in years gone by. The author states that many of the other characters are drawn from life, and that he has " sedulously endeavored to avoid writing a single line which can minister to morbid excitement." Four hundred pages, handsomely printed and bound. TALES OF A TRAVELER. THE SKETCH BOOK SAL nMAGUinD. By Washington Irviug. New York: G. P. Putnam & Co. Here are three little volumes in cheap binding, de signed as pocket companions for summer excursion ists. More entertaining reading matter could not be nelected from the whole range of literature-bqt the literary world, or the older portion of it, knows this. Those who have never read the above productions of ' Irving, have no conception of the treat that is in store for them. o Through Mr. J. C. Morgan, of Exchange Place, we have received these : SDoEVOc Tenuace ; or, The Clue of ,ife. By the i autlhor of "The Heir of iRedclyffe.' New York D. Appleton & Co. A story of English fashionable life, in two volumes, neatly bound, 600 pages and over. From a hurried skimming of the story, we should judge it to be a very ! pleasant one, well entitiled to its place in the feast of - fiction. THttE DISCARDEDo QUEEN. By G. W. M. Reynolds. 1' I Philadellhia : T. B. Petersoun. S To The last job of the great London machine novelist. It will be eagerly devoured by the particular class who have ruined their literary taste, or prevented the de velopment of a healthy taste, by reading the author's previous works. Later from Texas. By the steamship Mexico, Capt. Lawless, we have Galveston papers to Sunday last. The News of Saturday says : Never have we known, during a residence of more than twenty years in Texas, so sudden and so total a change in thie agricoltoral prospeets of our State as has ltaken place this spring. We have never before had so many and severe frosts at so late a period as we have had this sprinlg, compelling our farmers and planters to replant three and even four times over, until a universal gloom seemed to overspread the whole State with the most alarming apprehensions that a famine would be the inevitable result. And yet, at this moment, all the accounts that reach us from eastern, northern and middle Texas; go to shows that the prospects for splendid crops of corn, cotton and sugar cane were never better, if as good as now. In all parts of Texas, except somne of the western counties, there have been fine rains, and even in the west we are told the crop:" are not atlfering, but will he good if they have rains a week or two hence. The Civilian of Saturday has the following : Tie Coroner left this morning at daylight, on the steamer I)r. Smith, for tile purpose of burying the dead bodies found t. the east of Bolivar, and search ing for others, taking along citizens for a jury. Mr. Cold, o, Pol'wderhorn, and Mr. BIlown, our junllor, ac vomsloaied tihe party in tile hoe el orecogag zisgi sonice of the remains l tlhose whom they knew. The party will examine the beach for a distance of 23 miles, ald return tos-night. The Gonzales lnquirer (of tile 30th ilt. complains of continued drouth, and that the wheat crop in that re gion is already pa..t all hlope. With good rains soon a good crop of eltton will be made. Isl Barnett, Co ald, Goliad and K tnaes countiesa heavy rains have lately fallen, and farming prospects are brightening' The Paris (l.amsssr county) Parioit says tie villasge of Newburn, in that county, was entirely destroyed by fire on0 the 20th ult. The Ilhuston Telegraph states that the Houston and Henderson It silroad will pass through lHouston three streets above thle old capitol, and it is designed to have depots ol that side of the bayou. Three sets of workmen lwill soon be engaged in grading, and tile track will be laid to ltouston by the lot of November. The resolution was adopted. The Hon. P. Alexander, as chairman of the com mittee on Resolutions, presented the following pre amble and resolgtions : Where.s, The American party of Louisiana, en couraged by the purity of its principles and its stead fast devotion to the Constitution and to theUnion, and cheered by the increase of its numerical strength in Louisiana, having assembled in Convention for gen eral consultation, aod for the nomination of candi dates for Auditor, Treasurer and Superintendent of Public Education, and candidates for Congress, deem it proper, in view of these duties, to express the proud satisfaction we entertain of knowing, that, however disastrous was the result of the national con test of parties in the last Presidential election, there has been no abatement of patriotic ardor in our own ranks in Louisiana, nor has there been any surrender of the principles of faith which have guided us in our duty towards our country. We behold with unmingled pleasure evidences of a deep and permanent enlargement of preferences for American principles pervading the public mind of our State to an extent which removes every doubt of our complete triumph over our adversaries in any general I politicai election, hereafter, if the same sedulous ex ertions are employed throughout the State which have been successful in some portions of it. And imuelled by a high appreciation of the impor tant ends lesignedto be accomplished for the good of the people, by our organization, wve have determined chiefly, to direct our influences against the abuses of our State Government, which, under the control of the "Democratic party" 'have grown so gigantic of late, as to have trampled our constitution under foot; to have wasted our public lands; to have neglected our public schools; to have assailed the rights of pop . ular suffrage and to have bankrupted the treasury of And tie the end that nne whole people or teoutalona nhall be folly and correctly informed of the alarming extent to which these abuses have gone-the " Dem ocratic party" for many years having been in the ascendant in the executive and legislative councils of our State-therefore be it Reasoled t'hat tife State Executive Committee shall prepare an address In behalf of the American Party of Louisiana, which shall embrace a complete exposition of the outrages of 'democratic' misrule in the government of the State, and such other facts, together with principles consistent with pare Ameri canism, as may serve to arouse the people to a sense of their wrongs and a lawful resistenceof them ; and to secure the restoration of economy in the adminis tration of the government and respect for the consti tutional rights of the people. tonResolved, That the President of the Convention tuall appoint at his leisure the Executive Committee of the American party for the State at large, to be composed of a chairman, a treasurer and twelve other members in the city of New Orleans, and one mem ber from each parish in the State, six of whom shall form a quorum for business. Resolved, That said committee shall have power to itl vacuancies in its own body. Resolved, That said committee be requested toper feet a plan of organization of the American party for tie State of Louisiana, at their earliest convenience, wliel plan shall be transmitted to the Presidents of the various Parish Clubs, to be established throughout the State. Resolved, That the Executive Committee be, and is hereby authorized by this Convention, to require an organization of the members of the American party in every parish in the State, and that the Pres ident of each parish organization, shall report to the lExecutive Committee when organized in conformity with this resolution. Col. hichard A. Stewart offered a resolution, which was idoilted, giving the Executive Committee a right to nominate a candidate for Secretary ol State should a vacancy occur; also, to fill any vacancy that may occur in the State ticket. Serrie KILL.Ei BY A (RIaZZLY BuIlt.I-The Sacramento Union says: On the 7th inst., as we are informed by Mr. Harris, .5 young man by tile name of Church was killed by a grizzly Ihear in Round Valley, which is situated about eighteen miles this side of Clear Lake, in Napa coun ty. Mr. Church hlad been engaged in school teaching on the Mokhelunne river, and was in the valley on a t visit to his relatives. A party had been made up to hunt deer, and in the hunt started a near. Some two or three holts were made, wounding the animal just enough to render it furious, and having taken relfuge inl the clhtparral, it was, of course, impoasiblle for th:e Iunters to follow. They did, however, in the excite ment of tile chase, venture. and were soon scattered. Young C.rclnch went il with a cousin, but pushed on a little ahead, and they became separated. One of the party hIad climbed a tree to see it he could dis cover tile whereaibouts of thle bear, and while in the tree heard thle animal growling, and at the same time shaking the chaparral violently. The crops in Hungary, Moravia and Bohemia are looking exceedingly well, but they re less promis ing in Upper Austria. A letter from Vienna states that the Emperor will not confine his measures of clemency in favor of the Hungarians to the amnesty granted to political pris oners and refugees, but will also restore them their landed property confiscated after the revolution, and administered since that peroled by a special commis sion. It is believed that the value of the landed prop erty sequestered in Bungary amounted in 1850 to nearly forty millions of franca. Russia. On the occasion of his birthday, the Emperor of Russia issued a further amnesty in favor of political and other offenders. In the treaty concluded between Persia and Russia the latter renounces all claims to the money which Persia owes, and in return receives two pieces of land -one on the Caspian Sea and the other on the east ern part of Persia; and both of them, f>"r strategeti cal reasons are of the highest importance to Russia. The Emperor was highly satisfied with the General who made the treaty. This cession of land and other intrigues connected with it may account for the British procceeding against Persia. Davis, in command of the sloop-of-war St. Mary's, we extract the following : It was the opinion of those who have better means of judging than myself, that one month ago he (Walker) could at- any moment have passed the enemy's lines, and maintained himself in the open country. Since that time the desertions have been so numerous and frequent, not only to demoralize his army in number, but demoralize it in character, that towards the end of April, the only resort left to him was to cut his way down to the coast, and take refuge, if possible, on board the schooner Granada. Accord ing to the best intelligence, such an attempt would only have been the last effort of despair, and would have terminated fatally in less than five miles from Rivas. The time, therefore, had arrived for dater mining on the course to be pursued in the case vatici pated in the first letter of instructions of January 19: that is, " in the event of the expulsion of Walker and his forces from Nicaragua by the allied armies, and of his departure to adjacent territory in Centmral America for the purpose of hostile and aggressive operations." Capt. Davis excuses his seizure of the schooner Granada on the ground that she had lost her nation - ality, and therefore should not have been permitted to pass to the high seas.
