F•AILU Op nO ' B O10 LIFI AND TRUST COMt'ANYT. In New York o the 25th, Judge Peabody granted fifteen attachments against the Ohio Life and Trust Company, at the sunit of several hanks and firms in that city. By the attachments already issued, the liabilities of the Trust Company is found to be about There will probably be other attach ments applied for. The office of the Company is in possession of the Sheriff. The Express says : The most important event of the day is the suspen saon of the New York Branch of the Ohio Life and Trust Company, as unexpeeted as it has bheu start to all business people. From the Cincinnati office, the report is that all is correct there, and that Company knows no impediment to its pro.eeding as usual, exceptthe embarrassments of the New York office. The charter requires that one and a half mil lions shall be invested on bond and mortgage il Ohio, so that the resources of the Company cannot all be scattered by any ordinary revulsion. The Company in New York does no life insurance, and the suspen sion, fortunately, will not in this particular affect those who have provided for the future by life insuar ance. The snupension is attributed to the enormous depreciation In railway securities, with which the Company here has been very heavily loaded, and which at the moment are unavailable. It was under stood, at a late hour this afternoon, that the Sheriff was in possesesion of the books and assets of the con cern, at the suit of Messrs. Brown, Brothers & Co.. Win. Huge & Co., the Union Bank and other parties, and upoa charges of misapprpriation of funds. The streetis full of explanations of the failure, which are omitted here, as the facts will be soon elicited. a he suspension will be wide spread in its effects, and give a shockto confidence, which was not wanted to make frnantial alaire quite gloomy enough. The Ssoruiny vo which i ilread companies have been sub jected,by reason of the large decline in their market value, had rendered their use as rollaterais almost im a, osibe. It will nowbe shown what large sums have Sbee nk by the friends of many roads who have Scredited teir fnancial reports, and stood by their , stocks. Ohio and n hbortg States have been the re focus of a railway rm, and though the New York d office alone is now al uaneed assouspended, it will be a sulect ofl congratulation if the discredit of railway I, seourites does not carry the home officedown, anod 0 withit Western banks and bankers, all of which have ly too many railway ahares as collateral, for their safety. 'E> kr In my last eo ln I ih to give some attention to the inetigatlon of te prospectt and business of the Southern Oil Moc aompany, whose works are now rapldly'gbing up at fore the lower end of our city. But previous to entering B into that subject, let me pays a p*ing qgplitnent to To PtUe Oi sses o oil. - . it Our editors have made a commendable beginning Hs in aJlling the attentibn of our capitelit to the for m'iaerl deposits in Alabama,; and the advantageiof ean, investing thpir surplus fnndt in home enterprises- -Kel 'hose 'calculeted to 'develop hed resources of the id Southern States, while at the esame.s m the return P' will be as speedy and the profits certainly equal to nae any investments they can possibly make abroad. The e Triblide of thisimoering has a leader, under the cap- o,0 lian of"Mobile and her Prospects," and the Register ae bee, "Why are not the Resources of Alabama De- p veloped ?" Beth (rticles tend to the same end, and sti worthy of calm and seridus consideration. I am Ch rejoiced to find a more general interest manifested by sle our citizens in home enterprises. drn Our people-which my experience teaches me is J characteristicof Southerners-are slow to reflect, and am5 astil slower to take hold of any thing new. To this nor iiatircteristic may be attributed the limited progress test the Southern States have made in everything con- the nected with manufactures and inventions, as corn pared with our Northern allies. There is, I am con- Rr vinced, "a good tUnie coming." There is no just th reason why the South should not stand foremost in onr every enterprise that develops her own natural re- etc sources. Alabama is scarcely second to any State in am Union in mineral wealth, and yet what has been ns done ? Literally nothing! Yet I am confident now fro that we are beginning to reflect, and that the result i, of our reflections will bring forth a favorable issue. Beut to return to the object of this letter. I pre. re sumeyouare better informed of the details of the Southern Oil Company's business than I am; al- do though I have taken great pains to possess a correct d insight with the advantages of the process by which Co they convert the common rosin into valuable pro- bl ducts; and also to arrive at a correct estimate of the or value of the monopoly and of the benefits our own State may derive from the factory being established b here. Iam assured on whatI consider intelligent an- at thority, that the oils are manufactured at a cost of 15 to 20 cents per gallon, and that the oils are pure- 0 the separations being perfectly made by working close up to the patents. No one can be ignorant of D the rapid increase in the uses of every description of the article, and any substitute that recommends itself on the score of economy must inevitably claim the attention of consumers and come into general use. . Prejudice must die away in the face of such evi dences of its merits, as I have seen in a circular is- tO by the Company. Besides the very appearance w of the oils made under these patents, samples of which were exhibited to some friends and myself a j, few days since, as compared with the oil made from E rosin under the old process, will carry conviction to 0 d the mind of anyone as to the value of this discovery, . If the gentlemen who have originated this truly S grand Southern enterprise will give Mobilians a st chance to subscribe to a portion of the stock, if the t books are not already closed, I will venture to pre dict that it will greatly promote the interest of all a n concerned. We are a little clanish, I admit, and if c is do not have the opportunity to join issue with you in furthering a movement which promises so profit e able results to the stockholders and such advantage to to our turpentine interests, then we are not to be t censured if we do not extend to your enterprise that .- which you might otherwise reason a. ably expect. io Another point should be duly weighed by the Com. d. pany. It would greatly enhance their interest if some of our citizens were identified with this business ,Mobile is to be the field of your operations-the head ta, quarters for manufacture-for shipment and for sales. Here is the point of all others where the citizens e should co-operate; and how can they enter into it , with any pride or energy if they do not have the op eir portunity of being pecuniarily interested? It is he often said that when you touch a man's pocket you lee reach his patriotism. Although not altogether pre vs to subscribe to that doctrine, yet I must own ed that unless you open the door and give a community ut a chance, you can hardly expect that the aforesaid community will enter energetically into the advocacy Aof even so extensive a monopoly as the one now entirely under the control and management of New the Orleans gentlemen. Yours, Z. o nors CR Sr. LANonY.-The Opelousas Patriot, of x Saturday last, says : During no year within the memory of the "oldest get inhabitant," has it been no dilficult to foretell any s," thing about the success or failure of the cultivators usi- of the soil in this and the neighboring parishes. ]on A cold and backward spring made planters fearful th about getting a stand of anything ; when the seed en- did come up everything grew well for some weeks, then a drouth set in and continued so long that it ow threatened to burn up all hope of good crops; at last eld the rain came, and it still comes, even while we of write, causing thecotton to shed its forms and rotting sod the grown bolls. of All we know is, that we have good corn crops, se er, cured beyond the power of casualties, a precarious to chance for cotton, not much cane growimg, but a hope that it will yield very well.
