Tan Fases Paorzcmsears wos Naoa.o.- Under date of the 16th, the Wahlagiel igped eat of the Baltimore San wles: The report that M. Belly has ae eUlry cended· a contract with the Nicaraguandomermeaot,by wim the latter bar conceded to the French oeismeaat, ne or to a companly In France, which is ander the par pa mtoln of t oe overnment, finds credit here and ese where. It is not Improbable, Inasmuch an Louin Na poleon had, for a long time, cherished the project of immnortalling his name by conneting It with the colonization of this isthmus. While in prieao at vie Havre he corresponded with Mr. Marcoletta on the subject, and strongly expre.ed his desire and inten tion to undertake the work. Thetime l exceedtngly vorable to his purpose, for he is at peace with ll to Europe, and bein to ind t necessary to start some S new public project fortheratification of the French pople, and the emplom of the Frnch marine, a give a profitahle dieetion to oFrench sp ation and enterprie. O It is a part of bls plan, or oese, to open the transit to the whole world, and tbhet IUnited States ta will enjoy its benefets In common with the rest of the world, but on such terms as the Emperor may chose to precribe. If the contract has been elned we an hall soon see the porte on either side of the Isthmns vI in the hande of the French. For eight years Napoleoan patiently awaited the reslt of the teffi e f 3ad, tbhe UnTted Sates and Nicaragulra, se ey or In combination, to e- a tablish this ovenioeae and s their incompetency de to the task has been fully etested, it was time for Na poleon to take the matter in hand. Tao Rats--Ex.raordinary Floods.-The present has been a remarkable seasson, but nothing more. We have had rain, It is true, for more days together NI than preceded the destructionof the world by water, hi in the days of I ,ah. but no extraordinary floods, notwithstanding. The destruction of life and of t property, we concede also, has been very great, and, in some instances, alarming, but as yet thesebas been is no freshet, inuoondation, or food without hL parallel in the past, whilst as catastrophes, not oe of them can compare in point of destruetion to many which have a occurred in the eastern hemisphere. A retrospect of li history, says the Baltimore Patriot, will show this ; hence, as a matter of iaterest, we quote as follows: On the 17th of April, 1446. the sa broke in at Dort (a place famous for the Protestant religion) and drowned 72 viage and 100,000 people. in the el neighboring prorioces of Friesland and Zetle, p wards of 300 villages were overflowed, and 1 tope f of their towers and steeples were for ages after to be seen rising out of the water. In 1530 general in undation took place In Holland by which 400,000 a I people, it is aid, were drowned. A rock miracu- p lonely opened at Yorkshire, England, and poured out o water to the height of a church steeple, in 1686. In September, 1787, 2,000 persons lost their lives at a Nivaorre, by torrents from the mountains. In 1811, 4 24 villages were swept away, by an overflow of the a Danube at Pest, near Preburg. In 1813, in Sileaa, b 6,000 Inhabitants perished, and the ruin of the French t army under McDonald was accelerated by the floods ; Slso, in Poland, 4,000 lives were supposed to have been lost, same year. In Germany, i March, 1816, 119 villages were laid under water, and great loss of life and property was sustained. At Vienna, in Feb ruary, 1830, the dwellings of 50,000 of its inhabitants were laid under water. The same time 10,000 houses were swept away and about 1,000 persons perished at Canton, in China, In consequence of an inundation D occasioned by incessant rains. Equal or greater calamity was produced by the same cause in other parts of China, October, 1833. So, in France, from like cause, in 1840, the Saone poured its waters into the Rhone, broke through its banks, and covered a 60,000 acres; Lyons was inundated, in Avignon 100 bouses were swept away; 218 houses were carried 4d away at La Guillotiere; and upwards of 300 at Vabse, Marseilles, and Nismes. to A MXL.NCHOLY OccnRRaNcz.--From the Carolina Spartan we extract the following : On the 11th instant, a lad seven years old, eon of Christenbury McAbee, residing near Cannon's Camp - round, accidentally shot a little brother, only five years of age. of The particulars, as we heard them, are these: The father, before going to his work, locked up his gun in an out bunldng, secreting the"keyover the door. The place of its deposit was seen by the lad, who soon ufter, unknown to the family, opened the door, and got the gun. lie then snapped it twice of without effect ; when his little brother, gamboling off in great glee, told him to shoot him. Unfortunately he pointed the gun at him, pulled the trigger, and lodged the load in his side. After staggering ashort distante, where a sister met him, he died. It isa case for sympathy. PHENOMseNA OF A TORNADO.-From an account in the Baltimore American of a recent tornado in ne, that State, we extract the following: in A survey was made of the damage done, when it ad was found that the course of the tornado was quite straight, and just about one hundred yards in width. Some of the trees measured full sixteen inches in diameter, and there were not leSs than thirty of them which lay upon the ground within a short distance of each other. It is stated that on each side of the course of the tornado the trees fell in towards each other, which can only be accounted for on the philo sophic supposition o a vacuum having been cansed the by the swiftness of the wind. One old gentleman, on ih- his way to, meeting, lost his horse, such was the uas rapidity with which the water raised and the swollen condition of a stream which he endeavored unsaccess ful!y to ford. Another was compelled to shoulder his good better-half and carry her a considerable dis tance through a stream. al A DunEEDn OF DARgNEs.--Last Monday morning, i Ben.jumin Scott, a colored man residing In Warren, Trumbul county, Ohio, was seized by six or eight of 1 his colored fellow-eitizens, stripped and flogged fifty lashes with a hickory rod, for having betrayed the whereabouts of a fugitive slave to the men who were ie pursuit of him. [Cincinnati Gazette. APOLOGETIC REPARATION. - An exchange re- I marks : It's the common opinion that England will disavow the acts of her naval officers in the South, and make all suitable apologies. In that case, we shall have to accept any reparation ofred. But, at the same time, we are reminded, says a Mississippi paper, of a trans action Ithat once took place in this State. A distin guished man, M-, was struck over the head by a friend, whilst they were both on a spree. M- got well, and was looking out for his quondam friend to challenge him. His friend sought him in haste, and tendered the most appropriate apology in writing. M- was indignant. '1 must accept this, I suppose -can't help it, said he; "but I will cut a pretty figure, in my own estimation, walking these streets with a head full of bruises and a pocket full of apolo gies." A TRIo or QUruE ONEs.-A correspondent of the London Times, writes from Calcutta, under date of April 10: Since I last wrote a change has come over the be havior of our Chinese detenu. At this time he would scarcely answer a question. A celebrated Eastern scholar called upon him to try to learn Bnddhism from him. Yeh would not know anything about it. Mr. Layard tried to get him to admit that he knew of such an assembly as the British Parliament,or of such a thing as public opinion in England. Yeh knew not of spgh things. Mr. Layard told him that, thinking he was in the right, he tried to prevent the expedition to China. Yeh answered him only by a grunt. The fat unwieldly King of Oude, who occu pies the house immediately opposite, and grumbles all day long at being deprived of the solace of his Zenana, manifested a curosity, from which it seemed crowned beads are not always exempt, and actually applied to the Town Mayor to have some trees out down which intercept the view of Yeh's verandah. The King would have called upon the mandarin if the latter had given him the least encouragement; but Yeh treated all mention of him with the utmost scorn, refused to believe that he had been a king, and would not look towards his dwelling. An Eng lishman pointed out to Yeh the Minister of the King of Oude, Ally Nncky Khan, the Tallyrand of the East. He was told that this thin wily Asiatic was known to have been deeply implicated In all the In trigues which preceded the late mutiny, yet has trod the maze so cautiously that not a foot trace of his presence can befo'nd. Not eactly P local, but eminently national, as it involves a tansoes politician and an ex-President, who bate each other tremendously. Two or three years ago the railroad tb routes between Albanyand Buffalo were consolidated, " you remember, under the title of the Now York Cen tral. Thurlow Weed,of the Albany Eveisg Jouroel as engineered the matter through the listre, end *s for this service wastoreceive the sum ab of ae $8,000, of which Ersatns Corning was to farnlsh $4000 and Dean Richmond $4,000. The plan succeeded andl the money ws paid over. But as Mr. Weed did'at think it would lek well to have the stock stand in his own name, hebed it made l over to an old and very particular friend of his, Mr. Mcentosh, who had money as a railroad contractor. re It was understood between the parties that McIntosh was to hold the stock, and then quietly make It over to Weed. But, unluckily, Mcltlosh died iddemly, one fine day, and forgot to leave a will. So the ad ministratqrs, iu making up anso aront of the saeta, w stumbled upon the certlieates forthis 08000, and put them down to McIntosh's credit, supposing, of cours, they were his. The debts were paid, and a handsone bhlahce wne left for the widow, the attractive Mrs. McIntosh, who t married Mr. Ex-President Fillmore Thrlow'segbtht thousand dollars went along with the widow, into the arms of the man whom Thurlow hates, probably as bad as one man ean hate another. t At the Bay State House, in Worcester, Mu ., the other day, a chap from the interior, Isteed of turning off the gas which lighted his room, blew i it out and went to sleep. The proprietor of the 's house, on paiing the chamber, discovered a very strong smell of escaped gas, and knocking at the door inquired if the gas was not leaking. "Dolk know," was the response, "bot I cayter guem not. I'll let you know io a minute." HeJumped oat of bed, and commenced feeling on the looer nder the gas pendant, and then uwred: "There's no leak r here, sir, lecarscpet i as dr. da il can be." The nro prietor, with a laugh, asked to be admitted into the room, and showed the gentleman where ot leolfor b the leak.
