WEDNESDAY MORNING, JUNE 1, 189. e Bea gr.ans Sos) Sub.1. s We close the last of the spring months this evening with moderate stocks of produce, much lens than last year at this time, with the general features of trade and commerce closing under a less atisfactory state than in May, 1858. The money market, however, rules at a less rate than last year. On the 31st May t last the street sales-that is, through discount brok ers, ranged from 9, 9j5@10 'Ict., fully 1 jct. higher than at this present time. From present indications it may be inferred that the bheusiness in heavy articles will close much earlier this season than last. The quantities of cotton, tobacco and sugar on sale are limited. There is some cotton in second hands, which, with the stock in first hands, makes the quan tity on sale from 40,000 to 45,000 bales. The stock in presses and warehouenses and on shipboard is not half what it was last year at this time, and with the disturbances in Europe, we may look for an inclina tion at an earlier time to close business this season than usual. The offerings and calls on the banks to-day for dis count were heavy. We may expect to hear of com plaints ere long, from the fact there is considerable kite paper afloat, a share of which is thrown into bank, with possibly the makers accounts already well filled. On the street there were some diminutive transactions at 9@10 lct. for good and fair names, with some less tangible names going at the rate of 12 @15 cet., which denotes an approach to the tonso rial figures. It is, of course, to be expected that lenders of money and capitalists will, when called a on, make allusions to Europe, hostile movements, money scarce, Bank of England charging high rates, just as much as the Governor and Directors of the Bank of England care the value of a pin about the money market of New Orleans. We consider it the a hight of folly for buyers of paper who happen to have a few thousand dollars over to be prating about the Bank of England rates of interest. However, there is a more important point to be taken into con sideration nearer home. At the present rate of ex change on NewYork our banks maylose some of their coin, from a reduction in the cost of transportation ,r hence to New York, as we learn that the Express Companies, at their own risk, will transport gold h from hence to NewYork overland at I ct. Some of a the New York folks think our banks can spare them six or seven millions of dollars in gold, which will materially aid New York, and go far to prevent any crisis in that city. We do not coincide in these views. Our banks, to be sure, have a good supply of metal, but none too much under the existing state of distant financial affairs. The Exchange market moved along very quietly. . There were several sales of double Al sight drafts on r New York at 7-16@4 prem. The banks were divided in their rates, some selling over the counter at jfi Aet. prem., and others asking $ prem. Sixty days sight was sold at 4, .t1 Pct. dis., while the gene ral run of names ranged from j to 1,1 j@1i discount. - In Sterling there were sales of clear bills to dealers at 1094, 110@1104; remittance rates ruling from 1104@110j. There were sales of document bills at 1090. We quote them from 1081@1009. There was a very little inquiry for francs. We quote 5.12J@5.064, i with bank drafts being held at 5.05@5, a tolerable n high figure, considering the fighting attitude of the Empire. There were ho sales of stocks to-day. Holders are e firm, and would-be buyers at asking rates are scarce. The surmises are now that the affairs of Messrs. Hargous & Brother, New York, so far as the Loui sianaTehuantepec Companyis concerned, are gloomy. The house in New York has made an assignment, which looks ominous; nevertheless, such a move ment is not fatal in all cases to full payments, but prevents one creditor from obtaining an advantage over another. r A New York paper of the 26th alludes to the sus pension as follows: sThe affairs of Messrs. Hargous & Co., whose sns pansionwas announced yesterday, are placed under a general assignment. the senior member, who has I long been u Director of the Mechanices' Bank, resign ed lis soeat to-day. Some very wide estimates of the u probable liabilities of the concern have been made, Sranging from one to three millions, based, however, Ssolely on the long standing and high credit here and er at New Orleans and in Mexico, of the firm, and the facility with which their paper found currency. The amount of their outstanding acceptances held for rewYork account, is lprob.bly less than the surms for collection for tile New Orleans hanks and bankers. An assignment by Messrs. L. H. Meyer& Stocken lhas followed the recent verdict for $200,000 obtained by i, the Federal Court. From time to time we have observed many re marks in the financial and commercial articles of New York and other Eastern cities, indicating that the West was greatly indebted to the East, as the phrase is, and that it would take the entire crops of this year (1859) to liquidate the balances. This sup posed large amount of indebtedness appears rather on the diminutive order--that is, taking the remarks in the Cincinnati Gazette of last Friday as authority, which says there is produce enough in the West (more than has been supposed) to balance the East ern trade accounts, and to keep exchange to the ap proximaition of the specie point. From the constant receipts of Western produce at this point, as will be seen by our marine register, the impression prevails that the granaries in the West are not yet exhausted. From the Cincinnati Gazette of the 27th inst: The money market exhibited no new feature. The offerings of lamber paper gave a more active aplear ance to business in rooe quarters, but aside from this the demand was moderate, and matters were compar atively quiet. Rates of interest remain at 10@12 l ct. for good iaper. Eastern Exchange was generally quite close to day, and buying rates were higher, while dealers in many cases refused to draw except for depositors. For New York checks, 40d 45 was lpaid over the counter, and some dealers sought sliptplies of their neighbors at 50. Private cherks on Baltimore sold at 4.1, whiclt is an advance of 5(,10. Bankers talked a great deal about all advance on their own checks; but the 1o0 position did not meet with much favor. It is probla ble, however, that two rates will be made for bank ers chtecks-one for depositors and one fblr outsiders -say .j and I prem. It is not believed that a uniform advance of j or even r could be sustained long enough to justify the change. At St. Louis the ex change continues scarce, and straight Missouri cur rency is being remitted to purchase sight drafts here. At Chicago the scarcity also prevails. This is what causes the pressure here. In those markets, howl ever, but more particularly at St. Louis, produce is accumulating from increased receipts, and as soon as the markets recover from the prevailing stagnation, an increased supply of mercantile billswill relieve the exchange market. This is also true of Cincinnati. There is more produce in the West than had been supposed-clnolgh to balance our Easterln trade ac counts sufficiently to keep exchange near a specie point, and what is most needed, just now, is some thing to set tile export machinery again in motion. This imust start sooner or later, either from a decline here or it advance in prices eastward ; and when it moves, exchasge will be easy enough. It is somie grstiiciatioi to know that while se whave debts to pay we have tile ptroduce to pay them with. New Orleans sighitis shll it par p isying, and - j prem. selling. Private checks have eeen sold outsiide as low as 4 dis., but as there is very little offering, it can generally be disposed of at ptar. New Orleans bills sell at }~@ discount for for 30, and 1@lj dis. for 60 days. Eastern bills are in good regne-t ait equal to 6@8 Wct. There is some demand lir gold from the country banks, at 40@45 prem. We quote: 'IU"O . o s'I. 1N0. The weather yesterday was bright and hot, the tt, mercury falling low in the eighties. A slight breeze e. sprang up in the early evening, which rendered the ot heat somewhat endurable in the shade. ge The levee still retains an unusually active appear ance for the season, both landings being well is. stocked with boats receiving for allquarters. No prospect for a turther rise rd. for sometime to come, as all the upper streams are folling, with the exceptions if true, of a rise t St. Paul of several feet, whica won't affect the river ho here at all. Business was very good yesterday. Weather hot, and very windy. There are indroatioos of heavy showers falling soon, after we write this. The Besperian, from Omaha yesterday, was per fectly jammed with passengers, many of whom were returned Pike's Peakers, or, more properly speaking, those who had started for Pike's Peak and never reached that far-famed locality. Some of them were destitute of means. The Hesperian had, through and way passengers, one thousand people on the down trip. The Cincinnati Commercial of the 27th ult. says: The weather was cool and pleasant yesterday, oc caiored ty rec'relhing showers doriog tihe jay and last night. We have no important change to note in tihe river. Our dispatches show the state of the water above and below. Here it has probably swollen an inch or two since the last issue of the Commercial; not enough, however, to brag on, or hardly herald. Freights remain as last quoted : New Orlearns-Whisky and Oil, $1; Flour, 75c.; Pork, 0c.; Bacon and other Ponud Freights, 35 to 40. paer 100; Horses, $10 per head; Keg Lard, 1hc.; Dr. Goods, 50e. per 100. The Memphis Bulletin of the 28th nit. has the following : The river continues to decline, the fill in the twen ty-.four hoursending at 6 o'clock yesterday having amonuted to about one inch and a half. The water at this date has receded fully two feet from the high est porlt reached the present season, and is thirty inches under tile tlood line of 1858. By private diopntch we learn that the Ohio con tiurcs falling, cc-ith eight feet water in the channel from Louisville to the mouth. The trim little steamer Florilda which arrived at our port Sunday evening last from St. Louis, leaves shortly for Texas, to be employed on the Sabire river in the service of the Sabine and Galveston Bay Rail. road. She has been purchased by that company and brings down a large corpse of engineers and work men, together with supplies, etc. for the road. We learn through Mr. J. D. Smith, one of tile principal contractors of this road, that the work of construe tion has been commenced at Beaumont and will pro gress towards Houston with all possible dispatch. 'iThe iron for the entire distance is all receiv d and layine on the company's dock, and a very large force is now employed on the line. The company expect to unite tile Neches and Trinity rivers by the first of September. We are pleased to note the energy with which this work is being conducted, as, when cornm pleted, it will connect with the Opelouses road and furnish a direct and quick communication between this city and Texas.
