Te t Inds na st eIn cga The austin Garette plblieshe the followang letter, the date of whic suhoes that the Indiean concrerned n the late bloody foray had remained within the line ofthe Texun frontier for two weeks after commiting their first n trages in Erath atj. arsoo ha -l regret to have to inform you that the Indian are nll prowling about the mer vicinityof this place. We have had m or4O men after them since Sunday evening. The lust of The Indiana being on horseback, galloped from one cedar mot to another, and thus elude our men. The families are leaving the North Gabriel and dquaete settlements in rapid stccession. It is be lievead that all, or nearly all, of the inhabitants north of us will leave in lame than two weeks. It. is now time to prepare for planting our crops; but instead of doing so ounr farmers are compelled, maniy of them, to remove their families to keep them from being outraged and murdered--and that, too, moat probably, by savage villain, to feed whom we are taxed. Truly the times are sadly out of joint, to a Texas paper we idd the following letter from Gov e Houston The letter to which hed al" ludes in the postcript is the mysterius:adocament picked up some time ago on the clear fetk of the Braeos, whion we have already published r s cosirst Frer tlanaessaoe. t, Dear Sir-A letter of the 1th inste, from Lam pasae, is now before me. The accounta given of Indian depredations and mrdera are frightful in their detail, bit what can the Executive. do other than he baa already done? The paltry appropria tion made by the Legislature for frontier defaes and protection is nearly exhausted, and the troops now in the field will absonrb every dollar of it in leed than two months; the Treasury otherwiue Ia worse than bankrupt, yet the Executive will con tinue to use every meas possible to render pro tection to the frontier inhabitante. For your im mediate protection, you have a perfect right to raise one company of minute men, commanded by one tot Lieutenant, two Sergeants and two Corpo rals, and take the State for your pay and subsiot uree and I would advise that, if such a party is raised, it should not consist of more than twenty men, each scattered along the frontier, and that correct muster rolls, stating under oath the exact number of days served by each man, be forwarded to the Department, iu order that you mas be pre pared to present them before the Legislature for relief. The Executive has learned with regret that many of these forays ars lead on by white men in dis guise. Shonuld any ech be taken, he would re commend that they be gibbeaed at once. Minute men are only to be called out in pressing emergen It troops are mustered and turn ant unnecessa rily, and in greater numbers than the emergency reqires, or arc kept in servie longer than is neped fl,.the Legislature cannot be expected to grant relief. Very truly thio. SAMl 1stOUrON. P. S.-Particular attention is called to the fol lowing letter. The letter apeaks for itself, us many of the allusions to parties superinduce the boliel in ito genuineness. Ihave been isformed by gen tlemen of veracity and influence who have lived for years upon the frontier, that some of the par ties named ore men of notoriously had charaeters. r bite. HOCUSTON. C'ard from Parson lrownlow. During the past week, James W. Reese, of Geor gia, came to his death from the ethecte of a blow on the head, inflicted by John Bell Brownlow, of Knoxville. This occurred at Emory & Henry Col lege, both parties being students. It is with pain and reluctance I allude to this melancholy afair, and but for the many notices by newspaper editors and correspondents, which 1 have seen, I would re frain from making a single remark. It is legiti mate in editors to notice all such occurrences, as items of news, but when a case is to undergo judi cial investigation, as this is, nothing ought to be said, pro or con, touching the metrits of the case. Iknow no harm of the deceased or his friends, and if I did I would not utter one word of com plaint. In the absence of any information I pre sume them to be clever- people-they have my sympathies in their bereavement-and Iwould rise at the hour of midnight to render them any kind of service, supposing they would do the same for me. But justiee to my son requires the statement of one or two facts. The deceased was a very stout young man-about six feet high-weighed about one hundred and sixty. He gave the first offence in words, and he gave the first blow. My son, though a member of the senior class, had just passed out of his 20th year-weighs about one hundred and seven pounds, and is physically feeble. He was knocked down when in the passage, on his way to his room-his antagonist was on him beat ing him severely, and having kicked him in one eye, that eye was blinded by mud and sand. With the aid of a small boy pulling at him, smy son got from under him, and in the same moment seized upon a small chestnut stick within reach, and struck the one unfortunate blow. blv son left for East Tennessee openly, going to t~e Clade Springs Depot to take tihe ears, and was so advised by hisfriends, being myself at Nashville. He did not leave until the physicians pronounced the deceased in no serious danger, and until my son was ar raigned before tihe Faculty, and acqsuitted, and ordered to go to llss studies. He will return to Abingdon at the proper time, and surrender him self to the proper authorities, and await his trial under the laws of Virginia. As he is not, and never was, a quarrelsome young man, asnd in mor als will compsre favorably with the better class of young men at colleges, I respectfully suggest to newspaper editors and their rorrespondents, tihe great injustice of visiting upon him the political or persona sins of his father, over whom he has never exercised any control. w. s. BRnowt.now Feberary , tSr. Editor ofrs lhesnosilto Wlig.. WALxmn ron DovoLas.-A New York letter to the Charleston Mercury says: Gen. Walker, the filibuster, is in town. He is stopping atthe Howe House, where the horsemen and the Fiends of the extension of our area mostly congregate. The little "grey-eyed man of des tiny" was at the publshing house of Derby & Jackson to-day. They will publish his book. The General meets some of our irst literary men there occasionally. N. P. Willis, Fred Cozzeos, (Spar row Grass) Col. Fuller, and a lot of lady authors, (I don't include " Belle Brittain ") convene there, but the General is the cynosure of all eyes. Of course hefavorsDouglasforPresident. IAttle " giants" always seem to like each other. More than that, Douglas has never "been down" on Walker. The General seems to think that there is nothing to prevent the nomination of the Senator from flinois, and that all creation can't defeat his election. He is consequently happy. Borace Greey, too, thinks that Dooglas will bthe coandi date, but h denies the probability of his election. sDISoanoE OF CArn. Ca~Bas.-We learn thatthe examination of Capt.
