The sls for discounts were not large nor heavy, when plbas 4 In Juxtaposition with the income. All good slotet paper was duly received. The moveesmlt of the banks are, therefore, oedned to the daslteee·ip and Incomes. On the street there were asles of t and esight months paper at the rate of 91Vot.; and although the general market may be said to be as tight as a drum, the remark can hardly apply ex cept to isolated ceaes. For instance, there are buyers of paper at 15518 Bet., who would not look at a piece of AI, unless they could obtain It at about the asme figmre. The ebhnges n the gen eral money market have been few and far be tween through the week. On Monday and Tues day, the 0th April and st tnst.,itwas, inanlmetal parlance, tolerably tight. On Wedasaday It was with the banks favorable, particularly as on that day three banks found themselvese in aposition to discount freely, which the mtndators carried out to the fullest extent, as very little paper was re jected; but the discounts are, of conrse, In nine caes out often, confined to short dated paper. If we closely serutinle, It will be found that there are payable into the banks between this and the 1t day of Angust about$2200,00 of paper under discount, and about 0,000,000 of collection and other paper. The line of discount under active movements is merely the paying in one aide and paying out or reissuing on the other; something like taking it out of one pocket and putting it in the other. We annex the following figures as covering the movements : hT4hs d boal dated eommerral paper-...-........ F . To these raties we havetad to ad rs move tcst from.............. .......... 810 peIt. To these rates we have to add the tosors move ments, which are rather quiet. We have, how ever, to quote from 18014 ~et. The tonsorial operators are, however, going into summer retire ment, as the most of them have disbursed their oleaginous matter at good, and presumed to be, paying rates. The Exchange market moved along very quinetly to-day. The counter rate on NewYork was steady at most of the banks at j prem.; though for some small sums I was asked, the figure cannot be con sidered a quotation. Outside the rates ruled from 3-1il prem. for choice sight; part} premium for one and three days alght; jt dis. for fifteen days sight; }O@ dig. for thirty days sight, and for sixty days sight all sorts of prices at from jtj dis s count to 1@l0 lot., with tiger bills, thdogh scarce, at from 110l dis. The ruling rate for good com mercial sixty days ruled at from t@lt discount. In 3 Sterling the market appeared in favor of, and, in fact, was easier for buyers. Under large offerigs we have to note transactions at 108i@10a nup to 108}. About £40,000 were taken within and in oluding these figures, though the rates may have ranged at from 108;@109, yet some buyers obtain ed al they wanted muoh below 1009, that is, from 1081 down. The banks were asking 1091, but sold eight at 110. No change in francs. It might be supposed from the extreme dullness in francs there was no such place known as France. We quote the holding rates at from 5.20@5.121 for the run of the market, and 6.10@5.05 on Paris direct. $ There were no sales of stocks to-day to our 2 knowledge. There is no desire to sell under par for the least favored shares. Some few shares have been placed on the market under a pressing for money; but take the general market all round, holders are firm and evince no desire to sell. The dividend season will commence on Monday, the 24th June, led off by the Canal Bank, with 5 iot. r for the current six months. Under the present apathy and dullness of the general Stock and Bond market, it Is unnecessary to give the usual weekly table of quotations. The season of the year has now so far advanced 2 that we might as well dispense with our usual weekly remarks on uncurrent money, bank issues, bullion and coin generally. The offerings of bank issues have been very light for the week. There is no improvement in the position of the Western 2 banks, or rather the Northwestern, that is, the banks in Illinois, Wisconsin, Iowa, and away off in SMinnesota. The efftets of the paper system are now being developed in these States, though it was supposed that the Pike's Peak mines were to be a panacea, which would furnish every individual a sufficiency of gold that would obviate any labor whatever. As regards these famous gold mines, the following is what is written from that jack-o' 2 lantern ElDorado: The most of thbos who go to Pike's Peak ,ith nothIon beter thaapick, nP or roeeker wll retum with fishermen satluck, oafter lsng thar outfit and af a year's ntime. If man wants to sueted, let him elb his meano with two or thrsee others and purcthse an oottt aotUisngo of horse portable steam to gine, and a quartt crushing maohine ; also 1r feet of leather or canvas hose to aupily water for watshing bte nulvertued quart,. are varieto othoer atiole and implements that should be taken along that will readoiy sggest .themselves. And here is a moral at once. We are knowing to the fact that many hard working and industrious citizen of Louisiana have been led away by these illusory accounts of gold, when, if they had remain ed where they were, they would have made more money-realized it in something solid, by simply raisiog potatoes for the New Orleans market. In fact, potatoes of this year's growth (1880) have shipped for New York and Cuba, and paid a large profit to the producer, much more than any mndvi vidual could have earned by working at Pike's Peak. The praire lands ; in fact, all lands in Loui siana will produce more solid returns than all the Pike's Peak and Washoe silver mines that have as yet been discovered. At this season of the year millions of dollars in vegetables and esculents can be disposed of in Northern markets with as much oncility and ease as bags of gold dust or the pro ducts of all the mines which are leading so many citizens here and there to penury and want. Every dollar received from the Pike's Peak and other mines has cost two hundred cents. The same re mark will apply to California ; that is, if a general balance sheet could be struck, it would confirm us in our remarks, that every dollar in gold received from California has been at the ratio of two for one. Gold and silver mines away off in these iso lated sections of the Union would do veary well for an ordinary talk, butwe believe that planting corn and potatoes will prove a much better return, ant without one-half of the labor and inconvenience. Therefore, to curtail a long argument, we have to intimate to all the great Northwest, say Missouri, Illinois, Wisconsin, Iowa, Minnesota, and the em bryo State of Nebraska, that we away down South would much rather receive your corn, wheat, pota toes, bacon, and even cabbage, than your bank notes, or the products of your gold peaks. In fact, the yield of lead mines is saleable, and pays well in our market. During this week the receipts of coin and bullion embrace $221,000 from the Ilio Grande, with some trifling sums from other quarters. The dollars, which came to hand by the steamer Austin, were sold at from 1070107--a tall price, but no more than what was expected. At this rito we may ex pect that shipments of American coin will soon be called for. If the large European bankers and dealers want the coin from this side, they will not stand nor higgle about a trifling variation in prices. If certain measures are to be carried, the gold and sllver from this aide must go. In American silver eoa * bLuiems for the week has been eooflned ta she $adly transactions over the coanters of the brokes. They bsy all that Is oferel aIt 99, though on some days the mrounnte tendered exceed the demand ; but hlf dolhlars are..goo,"eel at ll times.
