The sgar crop has also 0 received irreparable injury. Desastroas edvics o from the interior follow almost hourly. It will be some days before full details of lomses and ia will be received. Financnilly, nothing eofl serous 0 nature has transpired, bnt the eiects of the sterm r must have an important influence asthe season ad. vances. The weather is yet unsettled, andwithits o mild tendency, will still further augment the Injury Ssustained by the cane. With the exception of large enhanced tranese tions in cotton, the business of the week has been very light, on a very moderate scale. The trans actions in the great staple for the week reach 64,600 bales, which have been encouraged by the I apprehended losses and injury to the crop from the Sgreat storm. These apprehensions are well based. The sales for the corresponding week last year Swere 3800 bales ; for the same week in 1868, o 33,500 bales. The great Western trade has been in a quiescent state for several days. The recent European intelligence holds forth no encourage ment for shipments of breadsatnl and provisions. As for the latter, the stocks of meats here are only sefficienfeor the home demand and consumption, so The demand for flour, grain and meats is, there fore, confined sto the Texas market, Mobile and Florida, and the shipments daily to these markets are very large. As thbnsineshere is conflned to o cash, considerable sums of money change hands m daily. The impedimenta to navigailon and inter course with the upper country, via the West, pre vent the well-filled granaries and warehouses from " being depleted. The costa of transportation are /. greatl3 enhanced by the low stage of water. In the meantime, farmers and shippers, specUla r tors in general throughout the West, will do well to understand that, as usual, the merchants and traders of New Orleans engaged in the great Western trade are prepared, as heretofore, to vance on, aid and assist in moving the great West. ern trade to our emporium. Sales are, asherete fore, made for cash. The four months credit sys tem, with long strings of charges, as in New York 7} and Boston, have not yet been introduced into the SCrescent City. In the general wholesale and jobbing trade the improvement in sales and demand is light. Some few merchants and traders from the interior have 2 been attracted hither by the large and ample sup 2 plies of almost every kind of merchandise. The a dry goods dealers say their sales since the com 2 mencement of the commercial year have not been 2 more than half for the same time last year. The 20 grocers do not complain of so great falling off; the 10 hardware trade, however, comes in for a good share of depression, and in other branches the s complaints are free of a great decline from former r6seasons. The week has not been favorable for the Boole yard Qanal and other fancy retail localities; in fact, most of our returning citizens, particularly 1 those from Northern jaunts, have laid in good sup. - plies of crinoline and other articles of family wants. ( Our resident retailers in tape, bobbin, lases, rib. bons and so on, with dealers in the fancy line, must await the influx of our usual country visitors before we shall have the pleasure of remarking on a brisk state of trade. The money market has undergone no change for the better during the week. After the fourth of the month it was supposed there would be some thing of.a let-up, but as we did not coincide in those views, we are not disappointed at the con tinued large applications for discounts and the difficulty of placing large amounts of paper outside of bank. It is manifest that most capitalists and dealers in paper are rather shorter than usual; the deposit line of the banks shows that there are very small sums of money out of employment. Several of our insuranoe companies have large losses to adjust before long, and they have very limited balances to invest in paper. There was some very good paper offered to-day at the rate of 18 pct., such as could have readily placed last year at this time at 10 Ict. There appeared to-day to be more applicants from a class that have not heretofore been on the street. The small dealers or lenders-the tonsorial gentlemen-do not appear to be pressed for loans and discounts. The 18@24 lsct. gentlemen are easy and move along calmly and quietly. The payments into the banks this week have been rediscounted as fast as paid in, and though the sales of cotton have been to the extent of two and three quarters of millions of dollars, the cotton has not all been delivered. True, some factors have realized for their sales; others will, and possibly during the coming week or two weeks, parties may be anticipating buying up their own paper, if to be had at this week's rates of usance. The weekly statement of the banks to the Board of Currency this morning exhibits no changes in their movements. The public has only reduced its indebtedness $285,664 during tile week. The in vestments in exchange have been large for the week, yet the balances have been enhanced only $120,691, showing that the demand for Northern funds continue without any material abatement, and that there are large sums and a large amount of indebtedness somewhere held against tis, and which are to be liquidated by exchange. The season of 1860 and 1861 we now consider as opening, and it is well that the community should know how it stands. True, some individulat now and then who may be no fortunate as not to have a dollar of paper out, may exclaim, " Confound your statistics and comparative statements; I don't owe anybody!
