Jonas Bill, a constable in the town of Blooming ton, communicates to the Peatagraph the detail of a most horrible case of parental cruelty. Mr Sill says: Permit me to give yon and your readers one a the most heart-rendinginstances of parental cruelt that has ever come under my observation. O the 30th of August, 18C0, I visited Mr. I. C. Talber and wife, formerly from Ohio, living nine mile northwest of Bloomington, who were known t have five children, among whom was a son, who, i was thought, most be about 6 years old. Thi child had not been seen for the space of tohre ,years. Suspieions arose in the neighborhood the the child had been waylaid so I an oficer of th n town, was notified to make search for it. On th above named day I went there with two personm to investigate the matter. On arriving there I asked the mother how man c chi.:re. they had: the answer was, four, all 0 whom were in tolrt`rcoE..oe.~.trely denying tn existence of her second child. 1 t111 e.rted t her that the rumor was thatthey had five cimilsi and that I had come to make search for that chib These words thunderstruck her, and ehe then cot fesved they had five, but that they sent one of thei off to Ohio last spring, a year ago. I asked her few more questions about the child, and then aske her again when they had sent it off. The anew( was, last spring. This satified me at once that th child was not sent off at all. By this time the he band came in, and I stated to him my anthorit and my bnusiness concerning this child. Th prickedhimtothe heart, and he taid that they h such a child, end could not deny it. I said that wanted to see the child. He said the child was i a bad condition, and requested me to call in th next day and I should see it. I answered, no; shall not leave until I have seen the child, wher it was, and in what condition it was kept. When he saw I was determined not to lear without seeing the child, he got up and started fe a smoke-honuse, which was a few rods distant rfeo , the house. They made nor . sistance, but others made a show of fight. TI capturing party consisted of thirty men well arme so Tie Elkton Democrat thinks the law will be resin ed, and adds: "The Havre de Grace dockers are able to rail a flotilla of brave, hardy and adventurous men, an it will be no light task to preventthem from shoo I inog ducks, or to capture thenm when caught in tI act. It is said they are very much excited in r Sference to the duck law, and are resolved to sho so ducks as usual, at all hazards. The parties inte Sested in enforcing this law will find it no child Splay. They need not undertake another eped tion of the kind with less than a hundred men as several field pieces, as well as the requisite smo arms, and several fast sailing small boats of ligi draught, to run over the fats. The duckers wi fight before they will yield, and they are alread prepared with boats, cannon, and heavy fowlin pieces, and can raise a hundred and fifty or tw hundred men at an hour's notice. a timoer Colpper. A VFSBEL A THOUSAND FarE LONG.-An official report has been published in England of a river steam vessel belonging to the Oriental Inland Steam Company, and intended to navigate the shallow rivers of the East, which possesses peculiar scientific interest from the fact of this composite vessel being the longest ever yet constructed, bein nearly half as long again as the Great Eastern. 171 appears that on trial this great vessel, or train, was found to be easily manageable, and attained a satisfactory rate of speed; and its success solves the important problem how to carry a very large cargo on a very small draft of water against arapid stream. The train consists ot a steamer and five barges of the collective length of nine hundred feet. But these barges, instead of being towed asunder like common barges, are joined to one another by circular joints like a hinge, so that they constitute one long flexible vessel, with only one bow and one stern. The purpose of this arrangement is to ob tain tile necessary displacement with small resist ance, and without the risk of damage should the vessel get aground, and all these conditions are ef fectually fulfilled by the arrangements adopted. The train is thirty feet broad and seven feet deep. At a draft of water of three feet it will carry about 30,000 tons of cargo. Such a vessel is greatly needed at the present moment to carry up railway materials in India, and to bring down cotton, flax, and other articles of agricultural produce. - Boston Herald.
