It was impor. ta to prevent this, if possible, and gallantly hspjtkeen done. According to the telegraphic ac 'osets published yesterday and to-day, we have bdrced and destroyed everything the Yankees had there outside of the For.; taken a large number of prisoners, and' driven off the rascals who consti tnuIt.the famous rowdy regiment of Billy Wilson. And Wre did it all with only one thousand men. a The enemy's encampment, we suppose, was be tond'therange of the guns of the Fort; or it may a b9 that the Fort kept silent for fear of injuring their own. senmnore than ours. We rather think a new hid.'reare even with them, and something a ahead, comparing this bold dash of ours with their S.aeievegtet.of burning the dry dock and the L ashoond.Judah. Tlide Yankees, disregarding all thf rules of civil '-.d war, took captive, so the account says, a tonfederate lieutenant and twelve men bearing a lag of trnce. .This is the first instance of the sort that has occurred singe the war began, and, in deed,, is the first we ever heard of anywhere. It is aoiillustrait bn of Yankee meansess, duplicity, a and' ignorance of the laws of war and of honor, and will whet tfle appetites of our brave soldiers a $trfPeesfaonla for still more daring deeds when 'anothetopportunity occurs for punishing the dow ar.l.y rascals. blr ohly regret is that we did not capture the a lesder of this bandof cut-throats, thieves and laz IL aroni, the famous Billy Wilson himself. The r aclievrment would' have been complete if this graceless rowdy could have been added to our i already large menagerie of captive Yankees. We rlee that the fleetness' of foot which serVed his |lbritbren so well at Manassas was illustrated on I this occasion by the great warrior, and that he ded in cowardly precipitation to his den in the FOrt. But we will, pdftfps, get him yet. A man that is bhorn to be hanged will never be drowned. A NWORTHERN WARRIOR. The Hon. Henry Wilson, one of the Senators from iessaohusetts in "the old concern," has tee .lately made the recipient of asword, formally presented to him at "the hub of the universe," otherwise called Boston, by Mr. Winthrop, in the presence of thousands of atmlring spectators. Having been formerly a General of Massachusetts militua, he feels h martial ardor now stirred within him by the alarums of the war, and has raised a regiment whereof he has been chosenColonel. A sword is given him, and a stand of colors, and the r~rave warrior now goes forth to battle for his coun try (provided he don't run.) It is related of Wilson that in the masterly ad va4ce of the Federal army from Bull Bun to Wash ington, as krtemas Ward calls it, on the 21st July, he rest his carriage and had to take it afoot-but attempted to get upon a wagon, from which he was kicked off tyree times by the indignant driver. In vain he protested his name and station, but in theuhsrry and confusion of that pell-mell retreat thergw se no respect of persons, and benators had to heel it.as well as the commonest soldier. Wilson arrived in Washington late next day, dusty and travel-stained, having passed the night, as is sup ])osedin wandering upsand down the Potomac, even aathose unhappy spirits wander up and down the Styx whose bodies are denied the rites of sep ulture on the earth. Butit is refreshing to see that at lead one of the Abolition politicians takes the field, even though he should leave it in the presence of the elsemy. Those in the; North who'have brought on the war have been the last to take a hand in it, while in the South the politicians were the first to go forth to battle, Wilson, by virtue of his militia title, was, accoaunted a great warrior in Washington, serving on the military committee in the Senate, and walking the streets with a martial tread, as if helihd been a Waterloo veteran. It remains to be seen, now, whether there can be combined in the same man the opposite qualities of personal cow. ardice, and bravery on the field of fight. Perhaps no man ti the Senate has submitted so meekly to repeated insults, or exhibited fewer of the quali ties of genuine manhood than this same Wilson, who Sow proposes to come down South to whip the people that he is afraid of individually, how ever he may be when backed up by his fellow-cob blersof Boston and-Lynn. We-hsadnot supposed, however, that Robert C. Wiithrop had fallen so low as to be playing second fiddle to this impudent upstart and parvenu, and presenting him with swords and flags. ifr. Win. throp is a gentleman, with the education and tastes of a gentleman-bpt we suppose be too has been compelled to go with the rushing tide, and, like l'iverett, purchase personal security by ministering td the passions of the mob. But, let Gen. Wilson come along. We have just whipped the regiment o of Billy Wilson at Santa Ross, and we can per foim the game operation for all the other Wilsons that will givg us:a;ghance, TALK ON 'CHANGE. For hiree days past the habitues of the flags have bean somewhat exercised on the issue of the eve thjng papers, and no half column of telegraphic idspathes appearing. The. great-evil of rumors end umifeliable dispatches is, it is hoped, curing itself. The -brilliant attack on the Hessians on nt} R~fa Island was talked of freely, and much e wap, expreased at the successful result. But this engagement is supposed to have some connec tioen ith FErt Pickens. The Hessian camp so gallantly captured Bad destroyed was' located twetoe miles from Fort Pickens, being opposite to Pesaecola. Then, the further-talk was about the Hessian squadron at the mouth of the river. That itti increasing there Is no doubt. Moreover, it is sihpposed the Seward programme is intended to be carrield ut. That a port of entry and collection -of revgnue is about to be established at the head of the passes, wliere- foreign vessels can arrive andforeign merchandise be imported, duties col lected and the vessels allowed to come to the city, -dischargec cargoes and take cargoes of cotton o Euaope,. This is part of the Seward Coarse to fur. ish England and France with cotton. How sadly Sdisappeintedsome folks will be at the total annibi. lation of thi, secheme. We have reason to believe thq.tManchesetr spinnera really believe that the Lincolnltesawill furnish them with cotton before the clese of the year. The project is to admit yes aels under foreign flags to enter the Mississippi, some to the City-and load with cotton. That is, it is supposed our planters and factors will be so -very anxious for disposing of the staple that our authorltieswilloyverlook any collusion between the iiscolon and British Governments, and sufer it to 'be exported. ft shows how litle the position of afluirs is understood on the other side of the At lantin. They litile expect in Europe that the cot top will be retqined on plantations and in country warehouses until the proper time arrives to forward it to the seaports. In the meantime, the weather continues propitious for picking, and an average yield, notwithstanding the wet weather in August, 'o sure. Of course all interest in the extent of the crop l lost sight of. No calculations are entered idto, no estimates made, as in former years. IJ fact, Carondelet street has lost all eclat. The price of bagging and rope continues to advance. As economy and retrenchment are the order of the day, We.give the following suggestion from a tIis elalppi planter, in Holmes county, Missa.: While in'Yasoo City, my attention was called to a bale of cotton weighing four hundred and ni.ety. fVe pounds, Whishlwas put up in cypress hoards, and bound by-iron ties or hoops. The bale had bees put op-lay the Hn.. 3 J. B. White, a arge planter of Yaoo nounty, Mr. White, in view of the high price and .earcity of baling and rope, had endeav ored to deise some other way of putting up his cotton, and he adopted the-following method : iHe -ived cpyrese- boards about one-fourth of antinch thick, and three to sie inches wide and the length , of his press box; sadwheti the cotton was pretred I I~ahiov tlsn irit balinfg, putting It over so. It ould jsaole otlt hrei nhesunder e boardso a asen ~ lt .ts und tlp ber lettnthelr sides ts.iehw n copned thelmwlth the irontie an above. The ba s, did not;appear to beany larger than one out u, in the ordinary way, which weighs a- about three hasdred and fifty pounds. owing to the - fact that the wood and iron encasement is less elastic than the baeging and rope. Mr. White has ent a bale put up r th way to C. K. Marshall, at SRichmond, to be used as lint in the army, and as a or sample of what can be done in the South in the -a way of economy. He informed me that he should put wooden hoops upon his other bales, the ex pense being much less. Planters living the hills i- could use pine or oak boards, those being as good r- as cypress, except heavier. ly There was very little other talk going on, except c- the movements of our naval steamers (see account te below) and the sequeutration act. d The banks are returning answers to the interrog of tories propounded. ti- The following shares of stock are held in the n. His entire property in this z- State is estimated at six hundred thousand dollars, Sall madewithin its limits. His residence has been is in New York for many years. ic There was considerable talk about the Manassas 'a and tile return of the Icy. The Manassas went is down stream yesterday, and the Ivy followed, or a was to follow. We expect to hear of something te more than a regatta from the month of the river in 0 a few days. The following account of the Ivy's n trip to the Passes, from which she returned, was i. furnished by anwattache of the Navy: The Confederate steamer Ivy, Commander Jos. Fry, had a test of her rifle gun at the head of the Passes. No engagementwasintended. She found there the Fedeial steamer Richmond, of sixteen a guns, part rifed; two sloops-of-war, and the Water syitch, of six goun, two of which are rifled. Th, position of the RIichmond was such as to draw thI ire of the Ivy and the Water Witch. The Ivy fire:r ten guns to the satisfaction of the commander while the Richmond returned the fire and then arl opened, when about forty guns were discharge, by the enemy, many falling short, while their rifle, gons and shells passed over and around the Ivy a The enemy did not retire as stated, but the Iv 1having performed hier mission as to instructions, returnem to her anchorage.
