The Natchez Democrat eays the Crescent City is now not as important a place as Natchez-it hss not eaen a civil government; and the Democrat editor says he 'has serious notions of issuing a quarto sheet. The Natchez Courier learns from the Yozoo Banner that one of the mule thieves, who killed several respectable gentlemen the other day who were ' search of their stolen property, has been tken. H hbad been wounded and left behind by he others. The man taken is named Nelson, and hie associates, who are yet at large, are McDougal and Parish, all of Rose' Texas brigade. The county site of Scott county has been re moved from Hillsborough to Forrest. The citizens of the latter town have subscribed $6000 towards building a conrthouse. The people of Meridian are talking of erecting a hotel to nest t100,000. Wonderif they will have another No. 40 in tt.-[Brandon Republican. Well do we remember No. 40. Mr. Win. J. Furgnson, of Madison county, was victimized at the Diokson House last Tuesday night, t. the tlne of $150, consisting of one bill of 1100 and one of $50. Our detectives were put on the aleft when it was aaeertairod that one Samuel Herrinig of Vickseburg, had presented at the counter of J. & T. Green, banbers, a $50 bill to obtain change, This led to suspicion that he was the man, and he was arrested at thie cars, and the $100 bill found in the carriage he had occupied to the depot. With fle accuetomed boldness the Vickabnrg Herald ex posed the irresponsibility of the bank, and called on the Ft eedmen's Bureau to guarantee or expose it. The remaining three were told to "run for their lives," and made good their escape, the citizens thinking tlhat tie banging of their comrades would proba bly influence their ftunre coerse. iAberdeen 0uenr South. The following items are from the Vicksburg Journal : MonR LacENDIARYISi.-O- n Stuorday night last, about nine o'cloek, the large building ocoupied as a hospital was discovered to be on fire. This is the third attempt t1 burn this building within tilhe last few days. The party engaged in this affair was a white girl about ten or twelve years old. whose name we learn was Kohn. She was caught in the act of applying the torch. Had the nefari ous plot succeeded, no doubt the hospital would have been destroyed, together with a. large por tion of the city, as the wind was blowing-dery hard at the time. The matter, woEnuderstand, will undergo an investigation by Col. Ziegler, com maundih.g pn', and we should not be astonish d if older heads are implicated,. Mr. Taylor was on the top of the train, collecting fre, when passing under the county road bridge, two mile- from this city, the bridge came in contact with his head and shoulders, knocking him down and injuring him severely, but not dangerously. He was doing well last evening. Several accidents of this nature have bean caused by this same bridge, it being very low. It shoald either be raised, or taken away altogetner, and the banks graded. Louis NAPot.o IN A D.OL.-Lord William Pitt Lenox, an old dandy of the days of the prince re gent, has just published two volumes of remini secences, entitled "Drafts on MIy Memory; oeing Men I have Known, Things I have Seen, PlacesI have Visited." One of his many drafts, which, by the way, are not very handsomely honored by his memory, gives nous the following glimpse of the present emperor of the French, when he was, nh t to speik it profanely, ah adventurer in England: "Soon after the prince arrived in London, he was followed by a pugnacious Frenchman, who, for some pnbli, grievance or private pique, was anxious to fix a qunarrel upon him. A challenge ensued; and the prince's foe was looked upon as an expert shot with pistols. Although brave as a lion, Napoleon felt that he ought not to throw away a chance, and named the broadsword as his weapon. This led to some discussion. Leut. Col. Radcliffe, the French challenger's second, held a commission in the tnniskillen dragoons, a regiment which had recently been commanded by my brother George and anxious, upon so im portalnt an occasion, to consult a friend as to the line he ought to take, he requested Louis Napoleon to allow him half an hour to con sider the matter. With this view, he called upon my brother, who was then lodging in the same house as myself, in St. James street, hut not finding him at home, he asked for me. He narrated the circumstances. and I at once took upon myself to say that unquestion ably the prince, being the challenged party, had the right to name the weapons. Radcliffe adopted my suggestion, and the duel was arranged to take place with swords on Wimbledon common. The combatants met there at 7 o'clock, on the 3d of March, ed840, but the police interfered, and all parties concerned were talten to Bow satreet. The principals were released on. entering into their own recognizances of £a00 each, and one security each of the same amount. Hearing that I had ad. vised the use, of swords, LouisNapoleon expressed innmuch, g.titude to me, and to thig slight cause I was indebted for, an acquaintance ol a most friendly nature, iwhich brought about many soeiad meetings.
