If this country is not very soon involved in a war with one or more of the great powers of Europe, it will certainaly not be the fault of the tadioe revolutionarypaty of the North. While ouear war wan going on they did everything in their power to provoke Great. Britain and France-the former espeeially--lnto: hostllities, with the pri mary objidt, no doubt; ofsecuring the recognition of the Confedeirte States and thus rendering the reltratiOn of the Union impossible, and with a sealdary purpose of preying upon the commer cal marlDe of those nations with privateers. Sine ase war has closed the same system of cap tions complaint, of unreasonable demand, of unjust aspersion has been steadily kept up, requiring all the wonderful diplomacy of Mr. Seward to keep this country outof the actual embroilment of war. Those who respect the dignity of this obuntry and feel a pride in its character must have been pained at the recent exhibition which Mr. George Bancroft made in delivering his eulogy uponex President Linonln. An occasion of that sort, it would seem, should have been considered the least At of all others for a tirade such as Mr. Ban croft made agaioatnearly all the European powers butltussia. -There wascertainly enough in the life, character and public services of Abraham Lincoln to' o.ecu 89,ore than the time usually devoted to obituary Ailcourses; and foreign powers cannot ft to se i thie iroumstance, that Mr. Bancroft traveled out of the true'path of his speech to make this attack upon them; another strong proof of that radical hatred of them which seeks even the most inopportune occasions to find vent. - The leading feature of the radical character that which ns the spring of all their actions-is the reitless and anoontrollable desire to intermeddle in other people's business. They are not satisfied with regulating the affairs of the United States, or attempting to supervise the remainder of the North American coentientt but they must extend their guardian care across the ocean and embrace ali Europe within the folds of their capacious philanthropy. That France should dare to inter vene in Mexico without humbly begging their per Stinissfin' and obtaining their gracious assent, was an offebse not to be forgiven. That Great Britain should retbse to pay the losses at sea which they auferI & rom a power which then had a recognized right as a belligerent, was, if not asaus belli, the tee ing toit. That Austria should furnish a princeeo the ,MexicanEmpire, and Belgium help to keep him there, was not to be brooked. That . tdoes not immediately abolish slavery in adirkect insultto, radical sensibilities. In that any nation should refuse to appear be fore them with fear and trembling, and graciously Implore parmisslon to know whether any proposed policy had their sanction or not, goes to show a strange lack of respect to those who have assumed the indefeasible right to regulate the affairs of the hole world preeisely according to their own peculiarlaeste. SAs a markof respect to the memory of a de President, in compliance with an invitation, and in saeosldance with diplomatic usage, the represent aetaes of foreign nations had to attend Mr. Ban croft's oration. He knew that they would be there. He knew that they would be con -spcuously seated, and that they were gentle me ih o would not have the rudenese to withdraw while he was making his speech. Thus he had them at a iadvantage. Thus he compelled them to hasten to abuse of their own governments. Thuethese gentlemen, educated in the refined cir cles of courts, who expected to hear a eulogy upon the dead Presidents were assailed with slanders of 1 their own sovereigns and statesmen. Thus every of good taste was violated, and the canons of ordinary couetesy disregarded; and while these diplomatic'gentlemen were doubtless astonished, blea l ofhame mhbst have mantled the cheek Ivery decent citisen of this country who wit neeed the outrageous exhibition. If Mr. Bancroft olDasogellqd, tot disgorge his bile and to tnonce te heavy-verdict of his disapproval unhe management of-their affairs by foreign , there are many presses of the country, of c.sngenia symspathibs -throubh- whioh he could have made iawnu hi Opinions, and many friendly :frpmwahak be could, have .dilated to the prpggj i pail gueetiq his heart's content. But, likee te true Puritqt t he is,he coulid not forego g. ie opportunity to intermeddle, even at "theexo of gon toete and the dignity and ohoioterof tile eonn-tLaud'if we are now con { be t;f eh istle better than the sav ge.Wl~ t web aveasopplantedupon this continent, "t be the fault of Mr. Banoroft if n pbe not confirmed and strengthened. for us, the wisdom of 1lplomacy has sued ps thus far from involvminents into which thetiWd~ 14eadirs have been steadily striving to plunge uqThat the United States wilt never sub m punitstlyi. ng, is, of course, a proposi. ti.mnniveraolly agreed to by every citizen of the eountry=-bntthat selehould constitute ouriselves the eeafdb 6b dthersilaons' aihire, at the risk of t' ethuer another thing. The minA% are situated in Arkansas, on the Ouachita river, near the Louisiana line, and em brace 2140 roeas, which contain two seams, the upper two anda half and the lower five and a half feet thick, capable of furnishing four hundred and twenty-eight million bushels of excellent coal. Specimens have been subjected to analysis by the late Professor J. L. Riddell, and by Professor Gessner, of New York, both of whom have pro nounced it to be coal of a superior quality for burning, durability, and engendering steam. It also furnishes better paratfine than other coal, and excellent lubricating and lamp oil. The company possess other mineral resources, which are fully explained in their advertisement in another column. The Ouachita is navigable for barges and tugs at all seasons, to the point~where the mines are situ ated, and there can never be any difficulty about having a full supply at all depots along the Red and Mississippi rivers. This enterprise deserves the serious attention of our merchants, steamboatmen and capitalists. It is a home concern, based upon a solid palpable foundation, and gives every promise of an exceed ingly handsome profit on the investment. THE FIRExsEN'S ANNIVERBARY CELEBRATION. All New Orleans is alive with excitement and anticipation of pleasure not less than those which attend the gay revelries of the Caliival, and yet we are rapidly nearing mid-lent. So old Time sports with us. "PFrom grare to gay, from lively to severe" is the rule of life as of verse and converse. And the gallant firemen of the city of New Orleans will, on Sunday next, (to-morrow,) March 4th, celebrate their anniversary. Their proper an nouncement of the fact will be found published in another part of this morning's CnRSCEhT. What effect can it have upon everybody and his wife and their children, and all the other members of their family, and all their relations rich and poor, and everybody else but to rouse them to an irre pressible desire to be present and witness the ceremonies? And they will see them, and they will enjoy them with all the greater gusto that there has been a sad hiatus in the customary cele bration. May this one made up for it, and no similar one ever again occur. WILCox & GInas' Machine will sew, hem, fell, braid, tuck, gather, quilt, cord and embroider with perfect satisfaciion. Wilcox&Gibbs' are repaired and warranted at No. 5 St. Charles street. Please call and examine. " The American Cotton Planter" is the name of a new semi-monthly agricultural magazine just started at Montgomery, Ala., the first number of which we have received. It is edited by Dr. N. B. Cloud, and is published for only three dollars a year. The Cotton Planter seems to us to be a very valuable and useful publication. The Young Demoaracy are, by a notice in ano ther column, invited to meet over Fed. Gruber's, this evening, at half-past 7 o'clock, as business of importance is to be transacted. A full attendance is desired. Messrs. Keep & Caulneld, Nos. 77 and 79 Poy dias street, offer to the trade a very large assort ment of sundries, including flour, prime mess pork, bacon, mess beef, sugar cured canvassed hams, of the brand of John J. Roe & Co.; candles, soap, Goshen butter, teas, etc., etc. See their adver tisement. To MucHANTS. -- The merchants of the city generally are requested to attend a meeting at the rooms of the Chamber of Commerce, this evening at 7 o'clock. An adjourned meeting will be held of the merchants who waited upon the Fmance Committee of the legislature, and it is important that a large representation of merchants should be present. WooD AND WILLOW WARE, CORDAGE, ETC.--We call attention to the card of Mr. Morris McGraw, (late McDonnelfsi McGraw,) wholesale dealer in wooden and willow ware, cordage of all sizes, baskets in every variety, fishing tackle, wrapping and letter papers, and so many other standard articles of use and necessity that we cannot under take to enumerate them. Those dealing with Mr. McGraw will find him to be a gentleman who does business on sound principles, while his stock of goods, in his particular line, cannot be excelled by any in the city. Messrs. Gardner, Smith, Yeiser & Co., will sell, this day, at twelve o'clock, at the Exchange, sev eral very desirable residences in the Fourth Dis trict, and one cottage house and three lots in Jef ferson city. See advertisements, and plans at the auction exchange. TH. GnEAT SOUTHERN CIRcUS.-A matinee will be given, at noon to-day, by this circus. Tile usual performance at night. Stone, Rosston & Murray's circus commenced their series of entertainments last night, and the pavilion was crowded with an assemblage of ladies and gentlemen. Few more fashionable audiences have greeted a similar entertainment in New Or leans. The order was perfect, and the style of man agement quite superior to anything of the kind we have seen under canvas. The fitting up is also ex cellent, the performances are all of great merit in their different roles. Professor Hutchinson's dogs are miracles of canine learning, Burte's bear-back riding was very effective, M'lle Sophie, modest and graceful-in fact, the whole performance was pleasant and satilsactory. A woman, confined in the Saint Louis jail for drunkenness, hadther nose bitten off and her arms shockingly mangled by a pet raccoon of the jailor. After choking the animal to death, she flung the body at her feet, where it was seized upon and de voured by rats before succor could reach her.
