This multi of tudinous throng under way was somewhat t, organised after a while and divided into squads all and companies, for in the first instance no one or wanted to lose a moment's time inleaving the city am and being on the way for the suppression of the of revolt. Upon the march. the heavily stoving he column would now and then meet with carriages ity and vehicles laden with planters' effects and mova ly; bles, hurrying on toward the city as a place of ton refuge and safety, for the panic had spread all ato along the coast, and the danger and accidents had on been fearfully efaggerated. Families, women and av- children, in carts and stages, with bedding and clothing, were at every plantation, but when the eS- aeaiihted multitude began to perceive the steadily pe- moving columns of the regulars under Gen. Hamp er- ton, the flying horsemen that had escorted the tals throngs of planters' families halted and turned the about, serving as the scouting party for the rest of ver the armed force. All the refugees from the farms wer were assured that they might return to their dwell ury ing places for there was such a mass of combat it ante moving from the city that not the least appre the n besion need be entertained as to the result. And ir- Indeed, when the planters and their families beheld the enthusiasm with which the inhabitants of New the Orleans, of all nationalities, had volunteered for lis- the defense and rescue of the agricultural regions, Ion they no longer doubted of their entire safety and va the speedy suppresdion of the partial revolt of to. some eight or ten plantation gangs. For to this ire was reduced the whole of this magnified affair. Is There had been one or two assasinations sts of whites and the firing of some sugar 4o houses and plantation stables ; and had it not been for the consternation of one or two all fAmilies, who spread the alarm, the matter could srs have been extinguished upon the very place where he it broke out, the Andry plantation. Asit was, the ed intoxicated blacks, having perceived the flight of Ior the neighboring planters, had proceeded from one he place to the other, and always in search of their rd favorite toful, had committed more noise and n-o tumult than any thing else. However when the ne, Federal forces came up and some of the negro hr gangs showed Bfght, an end was soon made of the ie whole concern, and most of the negroes took to the re swamp, where they were afterwards pursued and me a good many of them shot down by the militiamen ith as well as the planters. Under these circum no stances the greater portion of the moving column to of volunteers, which actually resembled an Ara m- bian caravan more than any thing else-being ple accompanied by all the returning carts and vehi aid tlis of the planters' families having sought safety m in flight towards the city-never getting to the field of honor, and soon after being dismissed an- altogether by the authorties, returned as if in elf triumph, to their homes. The families of the rn- citizens of New Orleans were delighted to learn is with what ease this terrible revolt of the blacks, from Point Coupee parish to the very bas.lieux 1- of faubosrg St. Mary, had been quelled and routed./Once more every one recommenced the ill daily routine of his affairs, and the symptoms of iz- the nearer and nearer approach of the outbreak as of foreign war became then the one great occupa en tion and serious consideration of the thoughtful ch and far-seeing spirits of our land. If, now at the g. present day, we take into account how easy it is nt, for any considerable military force to be trans l ported by steam from one extremity of the State ,nt ti to the other, we can then come to no other con le clusion, than that with us no longer any apprehen as sion need be entertained with respect to outbreaks n or revolts on the part of our former servile or slave h- population. All the dangers of St. Domingo massacres are paraded for sinister purposes, but ill they will assuredly fail of their intended effects. all To work upon the fears of the white population r. in the country, and to instil hitter and hostile feel sb- ings in the black agricultural masses, is the hid ice den object, but in both of these, we are fully per s suaded, the guilty parties will be disappointed be or yond this expectation. Having kept for a number ole of years a country store in one of the most ancient se settlements in our State, (parish of Natchitoches,) ae and having, moreover, had the experience of a country magistrate, (justice of the peace and in notary public.) we have been thoroughly initiated P in the character of both the master planter and their subordinates, the agricultural black labor hr- ands, and tits upon the knowledge of the intimate y relation existing between these two classes, that we base our judgment that nothing is more easy and practical for them than to come to a mutual profitable understanding. e That these relations can be placed upon a per manent, amicable footing-that a system of patron a. age can be formed much more advantageous to In the blacks, than if they were to shift for them pt selves, or to live like squatters upon public lands, r admits of no doubt. And it is, therefore, in the full confidence that such an agricultural order will ly be established in our State, and that when once un der. fallheadway, this system will olierate favorably in our country, and the blacks from the other States will come within our borders and range themselves d under this advantageous liberal system. We there fore enjoin our planters and agriculturalists to persevere in their efforts and to take courage, for after the losses sustained, it is undeniable that the free labor order will enable the country to un dertakeagricultural enterprises upon a much vaster scale than could ever have been performed by the ht heavily weighed down slave labor. No doubt 0e that under the new system every one will have to x- become an active member in the bee hive, and for sd a number of years there will not be a prospect of as the former life of the rich agriculturalists, spend e- ing their thousands of dollarsin Northern or for th eign climes. But all this change will only redound me to the actual benefit of the South; for the absen tk teeism of such a numberof former real estate pro of prietors was a fearful drawback upon the South e ern country, and particularly for our State. The in many Louisianianswho spent theirincomes abroad to and left all the duties and toils of the citizen to the to present ones, or those upon the spot, may now be oe obliged toreturn to our country and assume at is least a part of the obligations of those interested to in our aoit and city. .The most economical washing soap everbrooght before the people is Pyle's O.
