cur survey J. It occurs to me that a few words
from me. if made public, might prove of laterest
to our friendv in the Southero tMates. Tha far,
from the pc, uliar force of ctreumstances, (as you
are aware) I have remained silent, having fornmd
the deternaLauon not to write one word until may
opinion lh. uld, from experience, be fully sus
tained by facts.
At the outset it is simple justice to state that
niany of the inmigrants who have come hither
from the United States are those who have been
totally impoverished by the late war and whose
last dollar was expended as passage money.
T'hese unfortunate conditions were in many ia
stances aggravated by their being accompanied
ly helpless fanailies-children, infants, etc.. etc.
It is also proper to state that a good proportion of
thore who have arrived at Belize have not exhibit
ed the sanie spirit which induced them to leave
the United States. Indeed, I smare you that many
persons who have come here left without knowing
nwore of the country than you do, sitting In your
cftce in New Orleans.
Ibree of our countrymen have shows the most
ci ninendabtle energy and activity, viz: General
Mchae, formerly fiscal agent Confederate Baates ;
Mr. 'limotby Mors, of Arkansas. and Rlav. Mr.
P'eirce. To these may be added W. C. Chamber.
lain, of Natchez, Mies., and Dr. Pugh, of Louisiana.

the lands. On the contrary all these have either
settled or have borne their testimony to the ca
;.acity of the country-and I stand ready to fur.

Mesars. Youncg, Loledo & Co. are fitting up a
large steamer (recently purchased.) for the pilr
pose of running up and fown the coast; and also
up some of the rivers. These gentlemen have
shown not only sympathy lbut the most generous
hospitality to those of our countrymen who have
arrived here. This steamer will be to us a great
acqurlition.

represent things precisely as I find them. I ant

as elsewhere, they will leave when the country is

an end. I cannot charge the country with this
epidemid, for it is liable to saplear withouot cere
nhiy anywhere in the United States or elsewhere.
Christmas here is a day or (rather week) of gene
ral jubilees. The natives spend the season ino
excesses of every description. The utmost in.
temperance in eating and drinking prevails, and
the wonder was that any of the creoles escaped.
