I Sh Ca Srleaus 4reutu W IEDBEBDAT I OIING, IPBIL 29, 18i8. The Crep* i the Seth. LoUIrIAA. TI From the Empe Parish, Plaqesmissal Warm bright and sonny day we have enjoyed this week. The prospect is as if spring. "gentle spring," has commenced I euraet. The erth a will soon be clothed li a thick mastle of veget(a. tion. Thus far mature has favored the eAorts of our plantrs d farmers to produce heavy cros. On many plantations, the cae is al eady well uer way; the area planted in rice will be much larger or than last season. We are sorry to learn that th-re A. s a disposltbon among our agricultorists to drop of the cultivation of corn; this is wrong, entirely wrong, and we advise our friends to grow all the corn they need. Our potato fields wl give ample returns, our orange crop will be rather light, o and our gardens are now In excellent condition. Di [(rom the Ibervlle South. th. With one exception, there are no complaints C, regarding the crops ti our parish. The exception S is that the insects or a certain description of worm deestroy the young corn as fast as it comes up. Some of our planters are replanting their w, corn crop for the third time, ad seem to despair P of succeeding to save it even then. We have been told by some that the greatest destruction is D. made by a whitish worm with a dark head, which bores into the yoeug stalk and works upwards in the heart. They say nl all their experience as * planters they have never before en this worm. W However adverse all this may be to theme plant ers, we hope they will not yet ve up, sad that they will try agin, and keep tryg, until the sea son will be qute pamed to put a grain of corn in the ground. P. 5Il5MrPI. w ([rom the Bay t. Lasts OGasette. From an extended inquiry among the citizens of 0. dfferent sections of this extensive county, we feel o justi8ed n saying that the crope of various kinds are very promisng and bid fair to produce well. The heavy rains of the two past weeks ceased jest in time, before they had done any damage; S still the graued is at present so completely satan e rated with moisture that even a pretty lengthy at drouth would not unfavorably affect it. Irish po tatoee, of which a large amount had been planted, promis exceedingly well; they are nearly all in bloom, and In a few instances are even ready for digging. Sweet potatoes, our great staple, have jost been set out, and the season is very favorable for a good start. Vegetables of all kinds are in c their prime. Of Bea Island cotton, owing to the , bad luck of last season, there will not be a great breedth of laud put into cultivation this year; but Havana tobacco, for cigars, will be exten sively cultivated. On numerous places the young plants have been already traasplanted, and are thriving finely. Ramie, the new staple, will also bave a fair trial, Altogether, farming prospects look very promislg. C TEXAS. 1 The Dallas Herald comments on "grumbling and despondency of farmers," sad does them the justice to ay that "they are consistent," as it "never beard one speak hopefully and cheer. 1 iogly during the season." From all the Herald I can bear there is a prospect of sa averags crop , in Dallas county. It adds: "We are informed that owing to excessive freezing. and consequent destructon of much of the wheat, the farmers of x Collie county have plowed up the remainder and a planted cotton. Their energy sad enterprise ex act honorable praise. In former years the average wheat crop of this county was twenty four and a half bushels to the acre, now from 1 four to five. Every farmer of any Intelligence knows the cause--the seed is exhausted and worthless. Are there any so obtuse as to require advice to never do an act of such Injustice to themselves and family as to sow the seed which R will be the fruition of this year's crop? The grassboppers have done much Injury to the gar. dens, but very little as yet to the fields, and though larger are not so numerous as formerly; and it is hoped we shall soon be relieved of their distresing presence, as they have commenced their migration." The S-gnal uys that the corn and cotton crop in Fort Bend county this year are very oromising. In one of his letters from Texas, Bishop Mc Tyere says : "The grapevines of Gonzales and Lavaca counties indicate a land of wine as well as corn. In its season, my traveling companion as sured me, wagon loads of the Mustang grape I could be gathered, and that abundance of vinagar I and barrels of domestic wine were sometimes made by the families that have use for those articles." ( The best way to economise in these hard times, Is to buy a Grover & Baker sewing machine, and do your own work. RAILROADb.
