Too much rain is the complaint in various poe
tions of the oounty, though with this eeoeptiog
everything is working smoothly; oottoa-serapug
is being vigorously condcted forward, aod esu
is growing finely.
[(rom the Mechsebe, May 2 ]
We are glad to see that the freedmen work bet
ter than they vote. The coming crop is very
promising, and if old Thad. does not acme eat
with confiscation, we will say (no matter who said
it before), " St. John the Baptist all right,".thWe
[Freom the East Felicias Democrat. May 1]
We were visited during the present week with
several heavy storms, accompanied with atroeg
winds. While these have done as far as heard
from no material damage, yet there has beena
little too much rain for the planter. Crepe are
spoken of as doing well. particularly corn, which
is more forward and promising this eeasoe than
it has been for many years previous. Vegetable
gardens are yielding prolifically, and all who have
properly attended to them are now luxuriating
upon their early fruits.
[From the Clinton Patriot, May 2.]
We have conversed with a number of planters
during the week, and from all we have the most
gratifimg reports as to their prospects for the
season. Corn is very forward and the cotton
plant is in fine condition. Potatoes and peas, of
which a large quantity are planted, are coming
on rapidly and promise a very large yield. The
fruit crop will be the largest ever made in the
parish. In a word, everything bids us be hopeful
for a bountiful harvest in the fall.
!From the Carroll Record, May I
We have had rather more than the usual quan-.
tity of rain this week. The thunder showers
have fallen with such violence that the groend
has become closely packed around the yoas cot.
t o,. its growth checked and its appearance ma.
terially changed for the worse. Some few of the
planter, have their hoe-hands In the cotton
patches cutting down the weeds, and thinning out
at me of the young plants; but cotton scraping
generally is not being done. We have not had
warm sunshine enough to promote the growth of
the young cotton. and the nights, thus far, have
been too cool. The corn has quite a healthy ap
pearance; there is an abundance planted through
out the parish, with the promise of an abuadant
