ING-THEt OGORGIA LEGISLATURE.
WAsaINorTO., May 17.-The House r.solution
setting the impeachment managers to work again,
has the following preamble:
" WHERrAS, Information has come to the man
agers which seems to them to furnish pr)bsble
oause to believe that improper influences have
been used to influence the determination of the
Senate upon the articles of impeachment exbhi
ited to the Senate by the Houseof Rapresentatives
against the president of the United States," etc.
The statement that Chase paid a congratulatory
visit to the president yesterday is uu'rue.
Salutee In honor of acquittal were fiBed in sev
eral Northern cities.
A doubtful rumor that Grant has written a let
ter declining the radical nomination unless the
platform conforms to his views, creates ex
cltemnent.
In the Senate yesterday. Nye said: "Let Arkan
sas come in to-day. Let us have a birth with a
death. Let us pass a concurrent resolution ad
mitting the State of Arkansas, and relieve him of
his embarrassment by paesing a concurrent reso
lotion and not sending it to him at all to have it
sent back here at the end of ten days with an
other defiant veto. We have had enough of him.
Let as admit Arkansas before the sun is down,
end let the prtsldenthave another sweet morsel to
roll under hie tongu 1."
This moreing's Chronicle says: "The Hounse of
Representatives should prepare forthwith, a new
article of impeachment, and arraign the presi
dential culprit at once ; and the Menate, as con.
stituted alter the admission of the Southern
States, should take short, sharp and decisive
acti n upon it."
It o stated that a cabinet change is pend
ing, and it is asserted that a new cabinet
will tend to harmonise Congress and the
president, and that the president will cease
obstructing reconstruction on the dongres
sional plan, the progress of events having
rendered his own plan impracticab!e, and the ma.
terial interests of the South requiring immediate
representation of some kind. rhis statement is
made on high Republican authority.
Gen. Breckinridge has returned from the Holy
Land, and was to have left for Qiebec on the 12th
instant.
SaVANNAH, May 17.-From reliable authority it
Is now understood that the Georgia legislature
will be composed of three parties, Democratic,
radical and conservative Independent. The latter
hold the balance of power, and their proclivities
so far are decidedly Democratic. Gen. Gordon
and United States Attorney F.tch will probably
receive the Democratic nomination for Unite~l
States senators,

Senator Henderson has addressed the follow.

WatsnmoTos, May 14, lr,%.-Genl;enen r In
an interview wilth yon on day before yesterday
yon suggested that my position on the impeach
ment questIon was against the almost unamnous
wish ol the Union party of our State. and that
you feared violence and bloodshed might follow
the president's acquittal.
Inasmuch as I owed my poaition here to that
party, and expected to support its men anu mea
ourel in the coming canvass, equally as I depre
cated the consequences you thought might ful
leow, though I did not anticipate nor fear any
such results, yet, in order to place myrelf beyond
the posalble censure of those whom I know to be
my best friends, I at once proposed to torwari to
the governor my resignation as senator. To this
you did not consent, and I then r quested you as
my friends to consa:t together, and determine
w hat you thought was proper for me t) do tnder

was that you believed the safety of the country

cluslve;ly, at least to my mind, against eight of
the articles, and had lnformed you I was no lesa
dec:ded in my judgment against the sufn-iency
of the others, leaving me in doubt enly as to one.
If, with this clear conviction expressed in ful:
secate, I should now sit silent, I would forfeit my
self respect and stand defenseless before the
world. You agree to eoeslder yor epinion, and
alhe.ungh you at first reso:ved to adhere to it, I am
g'athied that. on further reflection, you agreed
wIth tl+m that it was rquite reasonable : but you
still insist. as yeour opinion, that my duty requ!red
my vo:e to he so cast, or withheld, as might seem
oeceesary, on some artiiles, so as to Insure co -
riction. I at once mentioned the dIfficultyattend

Beators had been and were so reti.ent on the
luhject that I could not tell their position. I
