UFORKED mRsETTRIAN CIlRCH.
The general synod of the Reformed Presby
terIan Church has been in session in Pitteburg
for several days. Render Steele, of Philadelphia,
was elected moderator; Dr. McLeod, of New
York, and Rev. Woodalde, of Brooklyn, elected
clerks. The chief points thus far before the
synod are remonstranoes against the
action of the First Reformed Presbyterian
Church of Philadelphia, Rev. Dr. Wylie pastor.
Monday there was great excitement created by
the introduction of resolutions presented by
James Sample, of Brooklyn, to suspend Geo. A.
Stuart from eldership and membership in the Re
formed Presbyterian Church, and to declare his
seat vacant into the synod, for singing hymns while
uniting with other Christiane in the worship of
God.
TEE METHODIST CONFvasncEi AT HlICAiGO.
The chair was occupied by Bishop Ames. Dr.
Curry, of New York, on behalf of the New York
delegation, invited the conference to hold Its next
session In Brooklyn.
Dr. Harris, In behalf of the Methodist Monthly
Conferesce of Cincinnati, invited the conference
to hold Its next sessilon at Cincinnati. Both pa.
pers were tabled for the present.
The report of the committee on missions (No. 3)
concerning the management of Indian affairs, ap.
proving the pacific policy of the general govern.
ment, recently inaugurated, touching the treat.
meet of uncivilized tribes west of the Arkansas,.
wee takes up.
Rev. A. N. Fisher, a delegate from Colorado,
also addressed the conference at considerable
length, strongly in opposition to the report. Hav
ing lived for several years among the Indians. be
bad no faith in any pacific policy ; but believed
that the strong arm of the law must interpose to
keep these bloody and cruel savages ueder proper
restraint.
The resolution was indefinitely postponed.
Dr. A. Y. Osborn, from a committee appointed
to receive sad consider the proposals of the
African Methodist Episcopal Church for a union
with the Methodist Episcopal Churcb, repo rd
in favor of ano appointment of a com mon of
fifteen, to act in coojunction with a similar com
misslon of the African Methodist Episcopal
Church, in the interval of the general conferences,
to mature and perfect a plan of a union to be sub
mitted to the next session.
Dr. Slicer opposed the report, on the ground
that the African Church had a policy different
from that of the Methodist Episcopal Church,
embracig lay delegation and quadrennial election
of bishops.
After considerable discussion, the report was
adopted.
The report of the committee on the American
Bible Society was presented and read, showing
that the society is in a most healthy and pros.
perous condition, the receipts having been over
two and a half millions of dollars during the last
four years. The report was adopted.
OLD SCHOOL PR•SBYTURIAN ASMIxLY.
The Presbyterian General Assembly, Old
School, reassembled in Albany on the 25th. A
telegram was received from the assembly at Ear
risburg that a portion of the Tuesday morning
session would be devoted to prayer for Divine
guidance upon the important subject of reunion.
A response was sent that this assembly would
unite in the prayer.
The third annual report upon freedme was
submitted. It shows one hundred and sixty-ire
nmlssonarles, of whom one hundred and ten are of
the African race. Total receipts, $650,86S, of
which $8811 were contributed by freedmen. Sixty
churches and 4003 communicants, thirty-eight
schools and 2889 pupils were reported.
Rev. Joseph Williams, a colored delegate from
Georgia. by request, addressed the assembly. He
is as old man, and has been a preacher for thirty
years among his fellow-laves. He urged unity
of action and intercourse among the ministry of
both races, and pleaded for aid from the North.
He defended his race against the imputation of
indolence and diabonesty. His speech evinced
talent, sad was warmly applauded.
The report of the board of education showed
receipts of $43 364. There were 291 candidates
for the ministry, 22 parochial schools, 94 acade.
mies, 13 colleges, and 9 schools for persons of
foreign birth or lineage.
The special order, the proposed reunion of the
church, was taken up. Rev. Dr. Breckioridge, of
Kentucky, spoke eloquently for two hours in
opposition to reunion, until adjourned.
NIW SCHiOOI PRsBsYTIERIAO AtMdfiII Y.
In the New School Presbyterian Assembly, at
Harrisburg. on the 26th, most of the time wse oc
copied with foreign addresses. An answer to the
telegram sent the Old School Assembly was re
ceived, accepting and reciprocating greetings,
and agreeing to the concert of prayer for reunion,
which was set apart for the 27th.
The roll published shows two hundred and forty
commissioners present, the largest assembly of
this breach ever met. Every minister appointed,
save two, is here, and every Presbytery of ade
quate size is represented. These and the remark
able dispatch of business thus far are facts un
precedented in the history of this denominati n.
and show the inaterest felt in the great reunion
question, and the ability and determinration of the
churchbes to grapple with and decide it.
A very prominent feature of the traneactions
tbhu far has been the latereet felt codcernnlog the
lattyof the church. Many of the chief addresses
have been made by elders, and the whole subject
of the relation of the laity to the church i eri
dently attreeting nunesal attention.
