TRUBSDAY MORNING, JUNE 4. 188.
aea. satler's Zaper a-A sr4 froa Thakrtw
weed.
'Tbough in a condition of health which furnished
good reasons for avoiding fatigue, I was not will.
log to subject myself to abuse (sure, however,
from the Trtbnas and Herald. whatever I do or
omit to do) by asking for delay into obeying Gen.
Butler's subpeia. The result, therefore, of my
examination (or so much of it as Gen. Butler
chose to publish) will be found on the first page
of this paper. It was not revised, or seen by my
self, after it was given, although in smitar cases
witnesses are allowed that privilege. Gen. But
ler, I am informed, devoted the whole of Sunday
(It was taken on Saturday) in preparing it for the
Hoose. I have nothing, however, to osect to or
complain of in this respect. What is given of
my testimony, with one or two sea Important
errors, is given accurately. It contains nothing
to explain or regret. I have neither done an act
nor said a word, in relation to the Impeachment
and trial of the president, that I would not do
and sa sgsn.
U the results of my information sad observe
tics teach me anything, it is that Senators Grimes,
Fesseaden. Fowler, Henderson, Trumbull, RBoes
and Van Winkle, voted upon their convoitions of
duty.
In eplaustion of the propositions made to my.
self, have just this toy :
Senator Pomeroy either intended to dispose of
three votes (incoding his own). or he was willing
that his friends should use his name to make
money; or, as.ome believe there was a con
spiracy between Butler and Pomeroy to Implicate
the president, thus obtaining new material for im
peachment.
My reasons for this belief are, that several
monahs since Mr. Leggett, an intimate friend of
Cbenator Pomeroy, wanted the appointment of
postmaster of Leavenworth, Kansas. He was
supported by Pomeroy, who wrote a letter, which
was shown to the postmaster general. promising
his (Pomeroy's) vote for presidential confirmation
and his influence against Impeachment. The post
master general was furnished with a copy of Sen
ator Pomeroy's letter (copied from the original in
his possession), and Le gett reseived a postal
agency. Some few weeks ago Leggett appears
before Colonel Cooper with a letter from senator
Pomeroy, saying that he would carry out in good
faith say "arrangements" made with Mr. Way.
lord, whol Pomeroy's brother-in-law; whereupon
Leggett and Gaylord undertake, for money, to
obtaln the votes of Benatore Pomeroy, Nye and
Tipton. I did not believe that Senators Nye and
Tipton had authorized this "arrangement," nor
did I believe that either of them would vote against
the conviction of the president. But I did and do
believe that Senator Pomeroy baited the hooks
with which his friend Leggett and his brother-in
law Gaylord flshbed. Whether they oanght any.
thin or not, I am unable to ay. Nothing, cer
, from me or with my consent.
If t were not necessary that I should avoid both
labor and thought, I should reply, fittingly, to an
ofeasive pernooal reflection of Gen. Batter, and
reply asio to one or two other assailants. Gen.
Butler, aware of the bitterness of feeling enter
tained by radical leaders and radical presses
agalset mes, chose to avail himself of that feeling
to stave off action upon the articles of impeach
ment. If he is satisfed with the reshlt of his coup
d'elat, I am content. THUaLOW WUED.
OmtrrAL HBr-xo-Burlingame's Chinamen.
The New York Herald has the following :
While arranging one of the groupe at this place,
Teh, who speaks English very well, had a ludi
crouss fall from a chair. In his descent, his cue,
or 'pig-tail," of very respectable length, flew
upward, and the end of it in some manner got eon
tangled on a nail in the wall. Perceiving the od
dity of the situation, he at once ourled up his
body and, with a laugh, requested he might be
preseted to the Gothamites in that attitade.
When they had tired of their vist to Mr. Ourney's
gallery-the young me of the party supplying
themselves with photograph of the ladies who
appear in the "White Fawn"-they prepared to
return to their hotel.
Near the doorway to the street, on their exit, a
number of ladies stood to scrutinize them, sad
while the carriages were being drawn up a tem.
pory halt on the sidewalk was made. A lady
stading near the rather handsome form of Tong,
forgetting good-breeding in her desire to acquire
hirsute knowledge nader difficulties, very delibe
rately took in her ungloved hand his long and ela
borately plaited one, black as coal and almost a
coarse as the hair of a "big Ingin." and oritically
examined it. Tang eyed the "lady" for a mo
ment, a smile illuminating his broad, fiat face as
he glanced at her own cotffure, and thee bowing,
said: "AU misne ! all mine !" The inquisitive
feminine retired in disgust, and Mr. Tung, the
smile ea his dark face deeper and broader than
before, entered the carriage with others of his
companions and was presenaly rolled up Broad
way.
