age contaaining fifty $1000 greenbacks was stolen
from the coaster of the Canal Bsak, New Or.
leans. The numbers of the bils wege at once ad
vertised, sad seat to the polles omodis throughout
the coastry. The lists received here were fuar
aebhed to the various banks by the city marshal,
and till last Friday the aluir was forgotten. On
that day a tlemna, a stranger, offered a $1000
bill at the City National Bank for smaller bills,
mad the teller disovered it to be one of the stolen
Does. The man was arrested, and was found to
bave three $1000 bills in his posesslos, two of
which were from the stolen ae. He gave
his name. Mr. L. . Sargent, of Brttleboro,Vs.,
Mud said he received the bills at the Bant of Re
demption, in Boston, in exchange for New Hamp
shire State bonds. He was detained, and Satar
iay morning City Marshal Drennan took him to
Boston to investigate the case. His story was
round to be correct, but the bank officers were
inable to tell where they received the bills. A
search in other banks revealed six more of the
stolen bills, whlchb had been received in the ordi
nary course of business. Mr. Sargent was re
eased and demanded the restoration of his bonds
irom the Bank of Redemption, as be did not wish
rurther trouble with the stolen bills. The bank
refused to restore the bonds, and it is stated Mr.
largest commeaced a suit for their recovery.
